BMI in atheletes

I've been doing some reading about this but I'm getting confused

I 'think' as sports people lay down muscle their BMI rises despite them not being over weight due to fat

Is that basically right?

I only ask because my DD (who is 14, a serious dancer and putting on muscle nicely) came up as on the 8/9th centile on the NHS's Children's BMI calculator & I can't work out if I should be concerned or not - I'd assumed she would weight heavier proportionally to her height & she obviously doesn't Hmm

Isn't she near 15yo? Most dancers are skinny.
If "they" don't worry until BMI %tile >95 for child being too fat, I would have thought

November so a while to go yet (she's only a baby........not even a teenager yet Hmm

I've been saying she isn't eating very well; well actually quite well (good food) just not really enough

Oh I guess I'm just being over protective as she has grown 4 inches since Christmas; I just assumed she would weight the same or more than her contemporaries rather than less (because of the muscle)

BMI is not a great indicator really, and becomes particularly bad for certain body shapes and certain builds. BMI as centiles is bonkers (imagine if everyone was overweight, you could be on the 1st centile and still need to lose) It is a simple gross screener for people who may need to be looked at, but you can't read too much into it.

Is she shorter than average? (I guess not as you say she's grown 4" in the last 6 months) but BMI doesn't scale properly with height, so if you're short or tall, it's not a very good measure.

If she's fit and healthy and able to dance, it's very unlikely to be anything other than what she is. She sounds healthy as described.

So I am fussing - Thanks Smile

She is 5ft 4 so not really tall & just 7 stone; but i guess she must be OK

It's just she has got thinner over the last 2/3 months & combined with eating less I worry
