Great North Run...are we mad??

a few of us at work have decided to enter the GNR in September this year.

Some are planning to walk it and a couple of us planning to run it...I've recently completed c25k and doing 35 mins running to just do 5k.

Am I being unrealistic to think I could train for this. In 3 months? I don't have great track record of consistent training, but this might just give me the target I need....

every so slightly mad yes, but in a good way !
I'm in a similar situation to you and have the same mountain to climb before Sept ( my further run to date being 4.5 miles - a third of the distance of the GNR - yikes)
There are some really good trainining plans ( think I got mine from runners world ) which are easy to follow - though you will probably have to train at least 3 x week to see improvements.
I also got some really good advice on another thread about run/walk training plans which you might find work for you ?
Keep posting wohmum, we can do this with a bit of support Smile

Im doing it too- I have just (today) done my first 10k (6.2 miles)- managed to finish in 1hr 1min - so I was really pleased.

3 months is enough- I follow a training plan that gets you to run 2 x short runs per week (3-4 miles) and then 1 long run (over 6 up to 9)

Look at Jeff Galloway training plan also- he has a plan that allows you to walk every couple of miles and still finish in reasonable time.

well done and good luck.

Eek! 83 days to go (I have a countdown app on my iPhone to make sure I keep the training up)

I think sometimes you need a target to aim for.

Have you actually got a place for this year ?

3 months is a reasonable time but you do have to be committed. Lots of people do walk some or all of it , but really it would be a good plan to try and run the majority of it imo - seems a shame not to.

Have fun. Its a really good experience.

Hello! was about to start a thread of my own, but found this one. I just decided to do it today. I am not in any state of fitness at all, eek!! But I am ok for weight and general health.

Going to try to use the 10-week training plan on Runners World but not aim for any particular time. Would like to run, not walk. I have got a place through the Anthony Nolan Trust website - there are 40-something places left there. Was on the site to sign up for the spit test, inspired by another thread here.
