Hello all

This is my first time posting, but I could do with some help with running.

I've just started running after a long period (4 year- 2 children) of no exercise. Prior to that I used to gi to the gym 3 times a week for classes or to use the cycle/rowing machines.

I started running 4 weeks ago and am now out 3-4 times a week for 2 miles. This takes me around 25 minutes, of which I run about 20 minutes and walk the rest (not continual running but in intervals)

I had basic trainers that I bought for £25 years ago and were ok for the gym. However when I started the longer runs (for me!) my ankle started really playing up- in some cases I had a slight limp for a week. On Sunday I went to get gait analysis done, bought some really expensive trainers and have been out Monday and Tuesday since then. However, my ankle is still sore at the end of the run. It diesn't last as long- maybe just for the evening.

Is this ok? Will it get better as I run more? In case it is relevant, I'm 6 foot and weight around 15 stone! Maybe it's just my extra weight?

Thanks in advance

I would say leave it until it's properly better before going out again and if it's still sore, go and get it checked it out at the doctors!

if you've had proper advice to get the right running shoes for your gait, it's prob more of a case of getting your running fitness up to scratch. I started running about a year ago & went through a bit of shin splints & general twinges before getting my leg muscles in enough shape to run continuously; took about 3 months. I also used to stretch more before runs as well as after which really helped, now I can just walk-into-run as my warm up. Good beginner walk/run plan will get you there.

Sports physio might be more use than GP.

When I first started running I didn't properly stretch. That makes a big difference, also there is a special way to lace your shoes, which supports your foot better- check that you have them firm (not tight) enough around your foot/ankle. Also you may want to consider upgrading your inner sole- my expensive shoes weren't quite right until I did that. and I got conned into buying special socks (but they too are lovely).

Like others have said it might also be a case of getting all those supporting muscles stronger. I found the couch to 5k a good way to get used to it (but still majorly intense). I've been running about 18months now and love it- keep at it it gets better. Go slow though you don't want to hurt yourself- but keep at it. Good luck Smile

Get it checked out. Running on an injury is a very bad idea.

Oh and don't go every day when you're ready to start again have a day break in between to let your body rest.
