I need to loose about 2 stone and seriously need to shift my arse! I have joined SW WW etc in the past but I hate the way they work, hate the uninspiring classes and would much rather develop my own healthier lifestyle - eat less and move more!

Trouble is I'm always starting tomorrow, next week, when this happens, after that has happened, I need to get a grip and start but can't quite find the way Sad

Find an excercise you love, that really love.

How about just starting to walk?

I aim for half an hour's walking, 3 times a week. But I started at 10 mins twice a week.

Just got back from Zumba - and I really love it!

Find a friend or friends to help get you out?
Set yourself a challenge, like couch to 5k and sign up for Race for Life to give yourself a deadline?
Find something that you can easily include in your daily routine (like walking, as HeathRobinson suggests)
Keep posting on MN with your highs and lows for moral support!

Hi kellamity, I do Zumba and although its tough, I've been doing it 18months now and am so much fitter. I'm well overweight although gradually reducing it now. :)

Hi kellamity - Zumba is a good start! Once you've built up a good base fitness have a look at spinning and Body Combat to vary things a bit.

Some ideas:

Low-carb/slow-carb is the most effective diet strategy to start burning fat quickly - cut out sugar, bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and compensate by eating more green veg, beans, dairy, meat, fish etc. Do not start messing around with "diet" foods and low-fat, low-calorie nonsense. You need to wean your body off carbohydrates and insulin and kick-start it into burning fat. It's also easy to deal with food cravings because you can just go and eat a mahoosive lump of cheese and still feel virtuous :)

Secondly - exercise is vital - and you need to approach this in two ways. Cardio training (e.g. zumba) will increase your overall fitness, metabolism, heart function etc - it will also burn off calories, decrease your blood pressure and generally make you healthier.

However, cardio is not generally enough to get 'fit' - you need to do strength training too. If your gym does Les Mills classes, then Body Pump is a good place to start, otherwise ask someone to show you a basic strength (weights) routine - start with the machines but you will probably want to progress to free weights as soon as your strength increases a bit.

Strength training has many benefits - putting on muscle mass not only makes you look great but muscle burns calories even when doing no work. You will also increase bone strength and density which is the best way of protecting against osteoporosis in later life. It's also great for posture and general neck/shoulder/back/hip/knee problems.

If you have very little time and don't manage to do any other exercise, you can do a tabata interval in 4 minutes flat! Again, you might want to build up your fitness a little before you attempt tabatas but they are very useful if you haven't managed to do your usual exercise.

Hi Kellamity,

All new mums might want to start with building up your core strength and stability. (But if you're enjoying Zumba then go for it - a great cardio workout).

In particular, you need to work on your transversus abdominus muscles (deep core mucles that go round your tummy like a corset) to get a flat tummy. Have you tried the "Ready Steady Squeeze"? It's an exercise recommended by the Ready Steady Mums virtual personal training service to make sure you engage the right muscles.

"Sit in a chair with your feet on the floor, straight back, shoulders in line with your hips. Breathe out and pull your belly button in toward your spine. You can imagine trying to squeeze your hip bones towards each other (you can't though of course!). You can also use your hands to cup your stomach and as you engage you should feel your tummy move away from your hands. Relax as you breathe in."

Being able to activate your core muscles properly is really important. Then whatever exercise you do you'll have good posture, be more likely to avoid injury etc.

Good luck!
