Running - backache and restless legs at night

Hi all,
I've ran off and on for the last couple of years, only upto 3 miles ish and this time I've been running 3 times a week for the past 4 weeks. I noticed when I started running again that I'm getting a deep ache in my lower back sort at the point of lumbar spine going into sacrum. It doesn't stop me running but it is what I notice most rather than being out of breath or legs aching etc. I've never had this before when I've ran in the past.

I've also been suffering with restless legs at night, again a new thing (the only time I've ever suffered with this before was when pregnant which I'm definitely not!). I wondered if the two were connected?

Thr only thing I did realise was that my trainers could be getting on a bit, I think I've had them maybe 15 months, but I am a bit on and off with exercise so they haven't been in constant use. Could old trainers be the cause of back ache?

Thanks for your advice
x

hi curly im not an expert runner or anything so can't give you proper fitness and running advice, but whenever i have stopped running for a while and then take it up again i get an achy back at the bottom where you describe yours it, especially when hill running. im not sure if its to do with your posture when running or just your body getting back into exercise but mine only lasts a few weeks then wears off again until the next time i restart after a break.

it might be related to your core muscles not being very strong maybe? maybe you could look at advice regarding strengthening your core muscles which im sure ive read is key when running.

im not sure if your trainers would cause a bad back, but you should replace running trainers every 500 miles so that they don't get too worn down.

sorry its not very scientific advice!! i only have my own experiences to go on Smile

I'm also not an expert but I have found that yoga stretches can help with exercise related back ache, eg:

Thanks for your advice here, I've ordered some new trainers and will look at some stretches/strengthening exercises for my back. I've been afraid to run again in case it caused any permanent damage, but think yes maybe I need to stretch properly and carry on.

Thanks a lot

I find I get restless legs if Im dehydrated....are you drinking enough post run?

Pogue909 · 25/06/2012 08:52

I run a lot and would say definitely new trainers to help with your back.

Are you drinking a protein shake after your run? I find if I don't do this in order to aid muscle repair I suffer with restless legs and all sorts of weird leg niggles at night. Drives me potty.

So yeah, protein, protein, protein. Preferably within an hour of finishing the run.
