Prescription sunglasses for sport?

I need prescription varifocal sunglasses. Wrap-around style. And I'd like them to either be bombproof, or else have a cheap frame which can be replaced. DH bought a pair of Oakleys in duty free once when we went snowboarding. Got off the top of the first lift, hit ice, fell on them and broke them. Hmm

Went into Vision Express today to have a poke round, and the only sporty type sunnies are Oakley, the rest are all fashun. So I guess that means I should be going elsewhere. But where?

Any recommendations?

Optilabs are normally suggested, but they are also extremely expensive.

You can get cheap, strong cycling glasses that take an insert which you can get glazed seperately. Say 30pounds for the glasses with different coloured lenses and then 15-20 pounds for having the insert glazed to your prescription. Rose Bikes have lots of options, such as this with this and you can get the insert glazed at specs by post cheaply.

OK, so that's standard wrap-around sunnies with a "glasses" insert underneath, and you then get a prescription lens put in the insert by mail order. Yes? And the optilabs (found them on google much later last night) justification for charging an arm and a leg more than that is that they do a "proper" prescription lens for the whole thing?

The glasses-plus-insert thing sounds like a plan, but I think I need a slightly closer fit than the cycling ones. I'm out on a RIB and there is quite a lot of of bracing wind that turns out to be 95% Irish Sea. Hmm Which really stings the eyes after a while.

Yep, all the cheap options have an insert - because the insert can take standard easily produced lenses, whereas the wrapped glass of the custom ones require more complicated production (supposedly)

Are you sure cycling isn't enough? They work fine for me into solid 30mph winds. Although I guess there's quite a bit less spray involved.
