Ive started this for all of us crazy enough to sign up for a race and then needing a little support and motivation with ongoing training up to the race. :-)

Just back from 11 miles, quite enjoyed it. Well Mapmyrun said 11 miles but I'm sure it was further than that! How does everyone else measure how far they've been. I'm wondering whether I should invest in a Garmin forerunner or similar.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 21/04/2012 12:42

Hope you don't mind me joining, I'm not really racing much at the moment, may do an off road half in May but otherwise I have a long term goal of the South Downs Marathon next year.

I did the London Marathon last year, got injured in the race, itb problems and it took me 6 months to get back to full fitness! I got injured earlier this year too and am just getting back up to a decent mileage now.

I'm not much of a racer at all, I love just begin out on the south downs running on my ownBlush I do love to talk about all things running thoughGrin

For measuring runs I have a super duper garmin 610. Used to have a 305 which was great but it got a bit old and I treated myself to an upgrade. It's been very good, very easy to use.

I've said it on your other thread, I'll say it again.....good luck juicy chops take it easy and enjoy the day.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 21/04/2012 15:05

Hello Doyouthink. Running on the South Downs sounds idyllic.

DrSocks - well done, glad you enjoyed it. I have a garmin 110 (the cheapest, most basic one) and it does the job for me. There's been some chat on my running club's FB page, and the 310 gets a good write up.

The only problem I've found is that because I run in a big city full of tall buildings (hence the comment about the South Downs) it can take a while to get a fix. And sometimes I apparently climb 1000 feet very quickly, and go down again just as fast. Yesterday I allegedly started my run in the middle of the East River Grin.

I recently bought my mother the same garmin, and she uses it for hiking to measure distance and generate maps.

DrSocks · 22/04/2012 11:42

Anybody else watching the marathon? Hope juicy is enjoying it, really glad it isn't raining for them.

I just can't get my head round how FAST these elite runners run for SO long. They literally run twice as fast as me! For 26 miles!!! I can't run that fast for 100 metres. It just leaves me speechless. And a bit emotional. Outstanding stuff.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 22/04/2012 11:51

I'm watching. They are awesome, how fast they go.

I can't even get to to their pace if I run as fast as I canBlush

I can't decide if I'm pleased to be on the sofa this year or envious of everyone running it. I just keep reminding myself of the pain......

Idocrazythings · 23/04/2012 18:18

Where are you juicy?? Keep checking the page to see how you went! :-)

We'll I've been a bit pants partly because DS is back to feeding every couple of hours through the night, we've just started weaning so I'm expressing milk and having an our to Express every day plus an hour to run feels a bit indulgent and because I was being bone idle.

However I went out yesterday. I was a bit time limited because I only got out of the door 50mins before DH was due to be somewhere so I was just going to run out and back on the trail which involves some hill work. I then decided to come back a different way so had to run faster to get back in time. Did 4.64k in 26 minutes but it includes a pretty hefty hill.

Rundouble has changed its 5-10ks programme from b25k to just some longish intervals. I prefer either shortest intervals where I can do speed work or just a longer run so I was wondering if its possible to write such an programme using an app. I use map my run to log my routes. Anybody tried it? Or anyone know any apps which include a 5-10k programme?

DH has just started c25k but is a foot taller than me with loooong legs and therefore runs much faster than me. I thought I might take the pushchair and go out with him for some speedwork too.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 24/04/2012 12:05

golemmings - that doesn't sound very pants to me, especially on very little sleep. I don't know how it works, but a couple of people on my C25K thread use an app called runkeeper for their intervals.

I've never, even at my fittest, managed 5K in 30 minutes. I had a dreadful race on Saturday, managed to leave the house with no water or music, set off too fast because I wanted to get back to see DS2 running in his race (which started super-late anyway) and ended up with cramps in my feet/ankles and having to walk. My new trainers rubbed slightly (but more when I walk than when I run - a good reason to keep moving Grin) I should have gone this morning but didn't (and won't now have time) but will go this evening after work. So will do some stretching with my yoga DVD instead.

golemmings · 25/04/2012 17:40

Probably should have gone out today but it is so very, very wet...

Idocrazythings · 25/04/2012 19:37

I love run keeper! I use it more as a log though ?. Good on you for even considering going out- I really must this weekend!

Maybe we should do a mums net run one day where we all go out at the same time, but in our own towns of course- kind of like a book club but for runners. Could even, following the book club theme make up a special m'net playlist (or am I getting a little manic???) hehe. I vote black eyed peas "I got a feeling"

Grin at crazy

I went out today although it was only a little drizzly, not proper rain

And only because i am supposedly training for my first 10k in a few weeks. Well actually i thought i had 5 weeks to train but turns out i couldnt count Blush and it was only 4 weeks. And now only 17 days

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 28/04/2012 03:53

Great idea crazy. Can I add Mr Blue Sky to the playlist?

You'll be fine Kristina

I've entered another 4 miler on Sunday to get over last week's debacle Smile. I will go prepared with drink/music etc this time. It's exactly the same route as last week, and I am determined to beat myself Grin

DrSocks · 29/04/2012 16:26

Hi all, been on holiday for the last week hence not on MN. Can't believe how bad the weather is! We were in Holland where it rained a bit, but managed to get out for two hour long, and one two hour long runs - no idea how far though! Well done for anyone who has even considered going out in these conditions.

There's only 2 weeks to go til my half so I think I should maybe be tapering the runs a bit but I've literally eaten the world whilst I've been away and am going to need to burn it off somehow! I think I'm all done with the 2 hour type runs, so I think I'm just going to aim to do something every day (speed work, easy pace 10k or spin class) for the next fortnight.

Keep up the good work everyone!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 29/04/2012 19:57

Welcome back Dr!

I did a 4 mile race this morning, very pleased with myself as I ran another race on the same course last week and today's time was 4:13 faster (I did have a very bad run last week!).

We are off on holiday next weekend, taking our trainers with us. I'm going to try to get out for a long run midweek as well, as I haven't got anything like as much distance in the bank as I did for my last half.

DrSocks · 30/04/2012 22:41

Thats amazing work shredded - over 1 minute per mile faster is v good going.

I'm in a right old strop tonight. I'm really enjoying my running at the moment and since doing the London marathon is one of the things on my "bucket list" I decided that 2013 will be the year. So I did some googling last week find out the ballot opens on 30th April. Conscientiously set a reminder on my phone, got in this evening to put in my entry and the website says that ballot entry is closed. Initially I thought i had the date wrong, but nope! Apparently it closes when they have received 125,000 entries. God knows what time the bugger opened but it certainly looks like I've missed my chance for this year. All the charities ask you to raise £2000 and I really don't think I can ask that of my friends/family. Sad.
