Which running watch?

Ruthchan · 29/03/2012 20:23

I am thinking about buying a running watch and wonder which ones people would recommend.
I've been reading about some online and can't decide which would suit me.
I run between 10 and 20kms and would like to know time, pace, route etc.
I'm less bothered about heart rate and cadence.
I am small and have a slim wrist, so I would prefer a small watch. One designed for women would probably be the most comfortable for me.
Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?

TIA

If you want the small watch size, then probably the Garmin Forerunner 110 or Soleous 2.0. In the UK the Forerunner is going to be cheaper, so I'd go with that one. If you really don't care about heart rate, then it should be less than 100 pounds.

Thanks.
I have read about the forerunner. It sounds like a really good watch, but I am unimpressed by the idea of only knowing my average pace rather than my current pace.
I wonder if the Soleous would be a better option because it gives current pace.

I think the Garmin Forerunner 305 is still the best running watch Garmin do, but it doesn't meet your "small" needs. The 405 might be suitable, but it's expensive for what it is I think, and lots of people hate the bezel.

I think the Soleous is a good option, just at the over 100 pound price point you see in the UK it just seems too expensive, given its north american price.

Thanks Fred.
That's all useful.
I will do some more investigating.

I always thought my Garmin 110 gave me current pace, and then average pace at end of each mile (or K, depending on what I have chosen).

I love it, by the way (or did...)

Ruthchan · 02/04/2012 17:18

That's interesting...
From what I have read on line, it never gives you the current pace, only the average pace for the previous mile/kilometer.
But maybe I have misunderstood?????

CAn you post a link to what you have read? I am sure it gives me current, as if I stop (eg for wee) and forget to stop the watch, pace has gone sky high and then slowly comes down. Pace of last mile shows at the point when you have done that mile, and stays visible for a few seconds.

www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Womans-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B003EGC36Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1333474736&sr=8-2

Here on amazon, all the reviewers talk about how it doesn't show current pace, only average pace.
Some of them seem to find this enough and others seem to find it a big disadvantage.

I wonder if it has been changed - the reviews commenting on lack of current pace date back to 2010/early 2011 I think. I have just been having similar convo with someone on diff forum who also said she only gets av pace not current. It may be worth giving UK helpline a call to check, they were v helpful when I called with a query.

Interesting.
Thank you.

Watching with interets. I have small wrists too but Im thinkimg that the HRM would be useful. Also im not very technical Blush

Ruthchan · 19/04/2012 21:03

Just to let you know, I eventually bought a Garmin 405.
I decided on that one because it has many more functions than the 205, but not much more expensive.
I was worried about the size and weight on my wrist, but actually it's fine. It's the size of a standard watch and having changed the plastic strap for one of the included velcro ones, it's really comfy.
It's absolutely fantastic, happily keeps working through the sleeve of my long-sleeved t-shirt and gives me lots of motivating data.
I love it!!!

Oooh very interetsing. Is it bigger than The 205? given that its quite expensive anyway i dont mind paying a bit more to get a much better product IYSWIM

Is it hard to use? < non techie here>

Ruthchan · 20/04/2012 18:59

I can't compare the sizes, because I have only seen the 405. (I bought it from Amazon, not from a shop so I didn't see it before I bought it)
The Garmin website lists the dimensions and weights of all their watches so you could check.
When I looked at the site I thought it sounded huge, but it really isn't. It's a normal sports watch size and is fine, even on my tiny wrist.
It's not hard to use at all. I am only using the basic functions so far, but I hope to get into some of the more technical stuff before too long.
I'm really happy with it.
