Advice needed, very unfit and lack motivation. Where on earth do I start?

I am extremely depressed about my weight and the constant yo-yo dieting.

I have finally accepted excersise would be the answer to a lot of my problems.

But where does someone start if they are lazy, unfit and lack motivation?

Has anyone else overcome this and got fit?
And advice will be much appreciated.

What do you enjoy? Is there a sport or class you would have a go at?
For me personally, team training with Easyfit has been my revolution. It's basically training as a group, lots of circuits and resistance work but we get diet advice, emails, measurements done etc
I enjoy it because it is fun, despite being very hard Grin and I work harder that I do alone

You need to find something you enjoy so that exercise is not a bind. Swimming, team sports, etc. Badminton is fairly easy at beginner level for someone unfit, swimming, or would walking in the countryside suit you better?

Or canoeing, sailing, fencing, belly dancing?

I lost 30 kgs over 10 months without ever signing up to a gym or diet club etc.

It really is mind over matter, all I did was watch my portion sizes, cut out the rubbish snacks (which were really me eating out of boredom or comfort) and I started walking with my neighbour about 3 times a week for about 45 minutes. It's about watching what is going in to your body and making sure you move. Whether you move by cleaning your house, cycling, walking or doing a fitness club..just get moving..every little bit helps it truly does.
I did not give up pasta or carbs or sausages or anything..I just ate lesser amounts and moved more so i never felt deprived. I did switch to a couple of lower fat items..such as cheese.

The main thing is just to start..either start walking..and then give it a week or two and tackle your food or start with your food and then pick up exercise. Be firm with yourself..no one but you chooses what food you put in your mouth, no one holds you down and force feeds you..take responsibility for what you eat. If I could do it ANYONE can.

I'd recommend setting a goal and following Paul Mckenna's I can make you thin system. You can get the book on Amazon for about £8 - that's the newest version with colour pages and a journal. I've been following it since new year, I've lost 12lb :) but I've never been so motivated to exercise. I was at a gym but that's fairly low impact. I decided to sign up for a 10k ! and I've gradually run further each week. Paul says anything you do that increases your breathing/heart rate is exercise so try not to get too Hung up on the concept of working out at a gym or running! I'd recommend Zumba, it's hilarious!
What's surprised me is how much I'm enjoying it and how much control I have with my food before I felt like it was controlling me This is the first time in 15 years that I'm not on or breaking a diet. I even had McDonald's yesterday but couldn't believe it because I left half the chips!
We even have a thread on MN fu of friendly people, pop over here to see what it's all about. New people join a lot. Come along and check it out, it may just change your life!

I have got the Paul McKenna book it's been gathering dust I listened to the cd for the first time last night.
I found it relaxing. I will aim to listen once a day.

I have been thinking of joining the gym. I work 12-8 mon-fri so could only go in the mornings and weekends so I'm worried it will be a waste of money.

Can you build some extra activity into your daily life?
Try lots of things (some great suggestions in this thread) and see what you find most enjoyable.
Exercise will amplify the fat loss effects of any healthy changes that you make to your diet:)

BlueChampagne · 06/03/2012 13:18

Go with a friend or a group - that way it's harder to back out!
Second building into your routine - can you walk or cycle more?

Can I please respectfully suggest you have a look at www.nhs.uk/LiveWell/c25k/Pages/couch-to-5k.aspx?

It's amazing. :)

Just getting off the sofa and out of the house is the first step. I find exercising with a friend is the only way to keep me motivated. If I'm running on my own and really don't feel like it I ask DH and he tells me to get out there. he knowds I'm a much happier bunny once I've done some exercise.
