Felt very nauseous after 12 mile run on Monday - lasted for three hours. Any advice.

So, I am not unfit. Have been running for years (albeit shorter distances) plus other training. Have been building up on mileage since January (have run as my weekly longer run, 10 miles x 3 occassions, 11 miles x1 and 12 miles once before in addition to this run over past 3-4 weeks ....supplemented by two or three 5 milers weekly.

Felt okay during this run although was suffering and feeling leaden about 8 - 9 miles in, but nothing horrendous. However when got home shortly after I felt dreadful - for a while thought I might have a gastric bug. After 3 hours ( and drinking plus eating some salt) I felt better. I am assuming I was dehydrated and had lost too much salt - sound familiar? Any experiences and advice?

hmc - I am just about to start Cto5K this evening so my recent experience won't be of much help! Grin But when I was running that sort of distance regularly I found this happened from time to time with no one specific cause. It can happen if you are due to start your period. It can happen if you ate too soon before running. If you drank any alcohol the night before. Or if you have even a light cold. 12 miles is quite a distance to run and puts a bit of a strain on your body so even the smallest thing can make a difference.

I don't know how old you are but I noticed that as i got further into the perimenopause so my body became less forgiving. Any and everything would impact on my stamina.

Ah thanks Orm......I think I may have been a little sub optimal on hydration due to a couple of G&Ts the night before Blush. Also am nearly 44 so right there with the peri menopause thing! Good luck on resuming your running this evening

That happens to me if I've had a coffee before (even a couple of hours before) a run.

I run these distances, same age as you hmc! I usuallly run between 16-19k once a week - a morning run and another run of about 10-12k plus other gym classes.
I have a very small bowl of museli before running I found this helps with endurance and keeping my energy up.

After a big run I have a diluted fruit juice with a pinch of salt (home-made recovery drink) My hubby who is in serious training for duathlon championships uses a lot of recovery and energy gels during and after long training sessions
It may be that your body went into a sort of shock (could be dehydration, loss of minerals) I was told your body tends to divert blood away from intestines to other parts of the body where its needed so digestive probs sometimes happen. I sometimes experience cramp in my tummy during a run but it seems to disappear. After a run I eat (protein is recommended to help the body repair) Well done on the big distances, hope this helps Smile

Thanks Gordon and Clure - I had a better run today, 10.5 mile route and took an energy gel - 'Go' made by Science in Sport (as recommended by a friend) at around the mile 7 point, and also has some sips of an isotonic drink and no ill effects to report this time Smile. I think I was previously too blasé about this kind of thing. Well done on the big distances right back at you Clure Grin

Have you tried having a glass of milk as soon as you get back. It's a very easily absorbed form of protein.
