I cant run anymore but really miss the competition side. I still train and would really like to do something competitive but there doesnt appear to be much out there.

Any suggestions? What do you all do?

Can yoy explain why you can't run? My friend switched from running to cycling and really enjoys it.

Archery? Bowling? Squash? Frisbee golf? What sort of competition do you like?

Roller derby?

cantfindamnnickname · 21/02/2012 21:56

I cant run because of a bad knee - Ive tried getting back into it but its not happening.

Whats roller derby?

Maybe squash might be good - never tried it - can i just turn up at local gym with a friend?
Whats frisbee golf?

To get an idea of Roller Derby, look up whip it movie.

Cycling (time trialling) is probably the most similar - just fitness and lots of individual challenges. I'd've thought squash would stress sore knees as much as running although it depends exactly what sort of problem you have.

If you've got a bad knee then roller derby or cycling may be out. Squash definitely is, those sudden foot plants and changes of direction put massive strain on the joints.

Have you considered swimming? There are active Masters leagues in most areas. Kayaking is also an option with a good competition schedule and space for the more mature athlete. A friend of mine is a big rower. Only possible if you live near the facilities, but also good for mature joiners and fiercely competitive. Water polo may also be up your alley. Competitive, relatively easy to learn and no strain on the knee joints. On the slightly sillier side of water sports I used to love playing canoe polo and underwater hockey.

Slug - Ive actually signed up for a regatta in the summer so maybe that will be something to consider longer term - we have the facilities as i live right by a river and a couple of clubs not far away.

We dont really have a decent swimming pool though - the local one is a kids wave pool but not a proper swimming area. The other local one is really small

I'd second kayaking. Several different competitive disciplines to choose from. If you used to run distance then marathon paddling might be up your street; you can race 4 miles to 126 or if you like short and sweet there is sprint.
