Couch to 5k 2011: Part 5 - Polished and Ready to Run

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/02/2012 09:07

Yet more space for us to talk about our progress on the Couch to 5K programme, the clothes we wear, the music we listen to, the gadgets we use -and our nail varnish.

New runners are warmly welcomed - come and give it a whirl, you know you want to! Although this thread has been going for a year now some of us are re-doing the Couch to 5K, some of us are relatively new, some are doing half marathons already, we are a good mix and would love to hear from anyone who would like to run with us. Just jump in whatever stage you are at.

I'm going to make a cup of tea and settle down to read what you've all got up to while I've been away eating cake.

Woo Hoo! Welcome back my lovely! I was just thinking about you the other night and wondering where you were and if you were still on MN under a different name. So pleased to see that my telepathy worked!!!!

Shredded! Hello! Are you ok? How are your lovely boys? Have you come back to Blighty yet? So many questions! So many exclamation marks.

Channels and sings along showing age ...

I bet you are running round the world now!

Coo-ee Nell how are you?! Grin

I've been wondering where you'd got to and if you had started running again yet too, glad to see you again. Well done on the run. I bet you were in PRSP when you got back!

No nail garnish for me at the moment either as nails a bit too broken Sad

Ooooh hello jelli, how are you? So lovely to be back!

No PRSP I'm afraid, could barely breathe! Have you kept running all this time?

Ive just run 6 Miles Grin for the first time ever. I was at running club and it was either 3 or 5. I wanted to do 4, but figured if I needed to walk I can so decided to do 5, but it turned out it was 6 Shock We went out a longer way to avoid the mud.

I have an appointment for my nails tomorrow thats if I can walk and am thinking of blue. I have shiney purple on my toes.

Well done FB, that's 10K dontcha know! I hope you can walk this morning.

Nell - still here for another few months, and waiting for news about whether it's UK or somewhere else next. DS's are fabulous, thank you for asking. Both of them ran a 4 miler with me on Sunday . I haven't quite got around the world, but I did run in Chicago earlier this week - I was there for work, and the hotel I stayed in had a running group on Tuesday morning. It was hideously hot though.

Liking the song Grin

Well no running for me this weekend. I had a sore thigh when I went out on Tuesday morning, and it has hurt on and off since so I have had the perfect excuse to sit down and knit all weekend.

Hope you've all had great weekends Smile!

Question:- on week three its got sessions that say run 200 yards or 90 seconds. Which one do u do? The one that will take u the longest? Just converted that 200 yards is 188m and I think I can do that in less than 90seconds.

No running here for a few days Blush, I have jillianed and hope to run in the morning. I wanted to reply to Melliebobs though, I didn't have an option on my 5k plan so I would just choose whether distance or time is easier for you to measure and stick with it. Hopefully someone with experience will be alon to help soon though.

Hi,

Where is everyone? I bet you're all sunning it somewhere nice. Its been nearly a week since I was last on and in that time only 3 different people have posted.

Mellie I also didn't have the option of distance or time, it was just time.

I went Swimming for the first time in years this morning (not inc when I take the DCs as I don't actually swim much then). Ive decided now I'm a bit more fit I am going to add something extra to compliment my running. I could really feel the workout in my arms. So swimming one day a week I will do. I also plan on getting a bike at some point and doing that one day a week too, but that will just be a weekly leisurely bike ride. Again just to compliment my running.

Thanks guys. I'm looking at the plan online through coolrunning.com. Gonna go for time. Working out distance is just too much of a faff

I've only managed one run in 10 days Blush. I am on night shifts this week so lacking in energy and sleep.

I haven't run for ages but we're now half way back across Europe and I'm hoping when we're back in the UK to pick it up again.

Mellie that sounds like quite a complicated plan!

I've only been out once this week. We're off to the beach for 2 weeks tonight, I'll take my running gear and try not to get lost like I did last time I tried that. We'll hire bikes when we get there too so one way or another I'll be exercising.

Which is good, since I've got a 10 mile run in 5 weeks time...why do I sign up for these things?

Another long term absentee popping back in to say hello. Just got back from my holidays, I heard Mr Blue Sky blaring out of a car and it reminded me of my running buddies.

I've had this thread hidden for a while as it was bugging me seeing it all the time on Threads I'm On while I can't run. I am feeling a lot better at the moment and have caught myself running around after the DCs a few times without any ill effects so I'm going to get my shoes on this week and give it a very short try again. Those of you who are new or have forgotten me, I am waiting for prolapse surgery.

Nell - good to see you back, I've been wondering how you were too.

I'm just watching the Olympic opening ceremony on Iplayer, going to scroll back up now and see how you are all doing.

WhoKnows, lovely to see you and I do hope that if you give it a try this weekend it all goes well. Hope you had a lovely holiday - ours started today so I might not be around much over the next couple of weeks.

I'm still around (lurking...). Still running, but thankfully have had little to report - have been doing 5 runs a week since the Buxton triathlon; consistent and uneventful, gradually increasing the distance of the runs by 500m (metres not miles) each week with the aim of being able to comfortably run 10k ready for next triathlon season. I think I'll just do one more tri this season at the tail end of September, same course as my first one so I can see how much (if at all) I've progressed.

Mellie I don't think whether you use distance or time makes much difference unless; you run v. slow or v. fast or you have a particular goal (i.e. to be able to run a 5K race). I used distance simply because I had a 400m running track near by and could count laps rather than checking my watch all the time...

FB Sounds like you're on the slippery slope to becoming a triathlete Grin

Noteworthy things;

  1. when running 30 mins x5 per week a playlist of 20 songs is not enough - I now know all the words to 'Son of a preacher man'.

  2. there are more other runners out when sunny than when raining.

  3. trying to run with a bag of shopping throws your stride off.

  4. micropore tape is a fabulous thing for preventing chafing Blush

  5. Nettles are best avoided, even if there are dock leaves to hand.

Grin Neil.

I did my own mini-triathlon today

I cycled to the beach, ran (3.5 miles, so a decent distance) along it, and then had a paddle to cool down afterwards. Unfortunately I didn't notice the huge wave coming which soaked me from head to toe Grin. I had been in the sea earlier doing proper swimming with DS's.

And I didn't get lost or chased by coyotes Grin.

Hiya, I would like to join, I am doing running into shape, did week 1 two weeks ago ran 60 secs walked 90 secs eight times I think

Today did week 2! Wow 90secs running and 2 mins walking 6times, it was very hard at the last 2 goes I felt like I was going to throw up! But I feel better now I have had a chance to rest Wink

I've never in my life been a good runner or had good stamminia so I want to see this though to the end Smile

I think that's sort of a super-sprint triathlon, Neither, although I may be missing something as I've never been chased by coyotes in a triathlon either...

Welcome Moving!

Unfortunately all my talk of consistency obviously jinxed things and I've had to skip the last 2 days as I've had a calf 'issue' and then work ran late... Still hoping to get out again tonight.
