Running shoes

I've just started the Couch25k programme, having pootled about in the gym for the last 6-9 months.

I bought some decent running shoes in the sales as so far I've been wearing squash shoes, which probably don't give the right support.

So I was told to wear them around the house first off to see if they would break in ok. They're much more snug than I'm used to (despite being the right size) - just wondering if this is usual with more supportive shoes. They're comfy enough, just get the feeling my toes are a bit more squished than usual!

Advice on most websites is to buy running shoes half a size bigger than normal to give your toes plenty of room as your feet are likely to swell when you run. If you run with trainers that are too small, you can get blackened toenails.

Any chance of returning then for a bigger size?

I would make sure there is plenty of room past your big toe, especially as you run for longer distances and your feet swell.... Some US makes come up pretty small - I have some Nike ones which are a whole size bigger. I would see if you can try some others... but I am particularly wary after a hideous little toe blister!!

It doesn't sound like they are the right size for you tbh, as storytopper says, you should buy running shoes a half size bigger than your normal shoe size (there should be a thumb nail length space between your big toe and the end of the shoe. Your feet will swell as you're running and your toes are going to end up very sore.
Take them back is my advice and go for the next size up, and if this is too big, go for another brand which may fit differently.

Thanks very much for the sound advice - much appreciated.

I should have done my research beforehand! I'll go back to the shop and see if I can exchange them for a bigger size.
