How do I train to run up 23 storeys of one of the tallest buildings in the country?

I have just entered a charity stair climb in February - the Heron Tower in London. 888 steps, apparently. My office is a five storey building and though I can charge up and down the steps in my lunch hour, that is not quite going to do the trick, I feel.

Not a member of a gym so I can't use any stair machines there. I do cycle to work and run reasonably regularly so I am fairly fit.

Any suggestions?

anything that increases your cardiovascular fitness will help but I'm pretty sure that running up stairs will be good training for erm...running up stairs (what makes you think it wont be?)

Charge up and down steps in your lunch hour and before work and after work?

The best training for steps is going to be steps.

Can you get access to a taller building - block of flats, office building etc - so you can run up more than 5 stories at a time?

No idea how/if you could find this, but many athletes run stairs at football/rugby stadiums or outdoor amphitheatres.

otherwise, are there any large public buildings or monuments in your area with big stairs leading up to the entrance?

Last suggestion would be to run up steep hills.

Good luck!

Move to a top floor flat without a lift? Grin

Thank to all - yes it is MORE stairs I am after. Five flights is just not enough.

However after doing 80 step ups onto the kitchen step on 22nd December I still have sore calves so probably all a moot point....
