Basically dh wants one for christmas. He wants it to track his run and be able to download it onto his pc when he gets back. He may also want it to tell him where he is in case he gets lost (jogs when away work and this has happened!) I'm not sure where to even start looking so any ideas gratefully received.

I will be in and out for the rest of the day, but will come back to thread, promise. Ta.

DH has a Garmin 405 which he gets on very well with. It was originally mine (my birthday present last year) but I stopped running so much after a hip injury and an incident where a bird crapped on my face...

One thing we both like about it is it's mains rechargeable, so there's no worry about running out of battery after however many months and then having to send it off to get sorted because you can't replace said battery yourself. You can scroll between 3 screens when running and set up whatever you want to show on them (3 fields each), though I think realistically you only ever watch one screen. The download is wireless - done with a little USB stick - and gives all the heartrate/speed/elevation information for each kilometre and also an average for the whole run. DH uses the graphs quite a lot (geek, bless him).

I think it has a "take me home" kind of function (its predecessor, the 305 did) so can help him if he's lost by bringing him back to his start point.

HTH

That's really helpful, thank you.

Its always really useful to hear about something that people have bought and found to actually work, otherwise i could spend a significant amount on a pile of poo. Many thanks.

DH uses his iphone with a free app called Endomondo. Maybe not too helpful if you don't have an iphone but you can also get the same app for any gps phone. It records all your history so you can see improvements, average speeds, calories burned, you select running cycling kayaking etc. and it displays your route on Google maps so you can't get lost! It speaks to him on every mile (you set this up) and shouts out his average so he can make sure his pace is right

Thanks for that Ellie. I have already suggested he use an app on his phone but he says his smartphone is too heavy to carry while running. It does weigh a ton though so I can see his point!

It was kind of you to post, thanks.
