Which exercise class do you enjoy the most?

I'm planning on joining a gym. Where I live there are loads of different gyms to chose from. One difference between them is the classes that run at the times that I will be able to get there. I've never really done any classes before and I feel a bit intimidated by the whole idea of them, but it would be good to find something I can really get into. So which class is your favourite and why? And what would you recommend to a beginner?

Some gyms let non-members go to classes, so you could try a few different ones to see which you like best.
I must say, I've walked out of many a class at my own gym - can't stand screaming instructors - use a mic with a normal voice fgs!

Body attack and body combat are my favourites, they are both quite full on!

I like spin, body pump and circuits although they are all quite hard you can take them all at your own pace so are suitable for beginners. Mix it up with pilates or body balance and add something like aerobics or body combat and you have a nice mixture to choose from. My gym does a great boxing class and boot camp too. Classes I have not liked are step and zumba as I have no coordination.Blush

I love zumba, it is really good fun. Wouldn't like to see a video of myself doing it though!

DooinMeCleanin · 06/11/2011 12:21

Bootcamp. It's not part of a gym, though but I think most areas do something similar. Enjoy probably the wrong word. I spend most of the class feeling like I am about to die and the rest of the class actually wanting to die Grin

But once it's over I feel good about what I've achieved. I've been going twice a week for three weeks and I have already noticed a difference in my fitness. Not sure if I've lost any weight but I'm getting measured on Thursday so I guess we will see.

Could you explain what a circuits class involves? Also body pump is aerobics with weights right? Am going to try out a few gyms before I actually sign up anywhere so will try and attend a couple of classes. Are most of the people really fit or is it common to see someone in a sweaty mess at the back? Am a bit worried about making a fool of myself!

I actually really liked my belly dancing class at the gym. Have considered doing Zumba but someone has lent me the DVDs so I can do it at home instead when I can be bothered.

Depends what you're after really!

Circuits (IME) is things like 10 push ups, 10 sit ups, 10 star jumps, 10 dorsal raises, 10 reverse dips etc. etc. - lots of different exercise moves, some cardio, some toning, that you do in sets of 10 (or whatever) and then move onto the next one, and repeat the circuit.

PatTheHammer · 06/11/2011 20:17

My circuits class goes like this:

5 minute warm-up of running step, star-jumps, mountain climbers, burpees and press-ups and some jogging.

then onto the circuits where we do about 1 min 30 secs on each station. Stations vary between strength training and cardio so todays was: tricep dips, boxing sit-ups, spin bike sprint, running high knees, up and downs, boxing jabs, medicine ball sprints, squat presses, wall-sits, punchbag and medicine ball lunges.
In between each circuit we do some cardio like step-running, burpees, jump squats etc.
About half way through our instructor takes us outside and makes us sprint 400m round the block and then do sprint training in the car park............................cos he is a total bastard!
We then do a 5-6 minute cooldown of core work (sit-ups, planks etc) and stretches.

It sounds tough, and tbh it is. The first time i went I was really unfit and nearly died!
But, you take each station at your own pace and if you can get through the warm-up then you are probably ok to continue.
You WILL hurt after you first few classes as the muscles you didn't know about start to become awakened, so give yourself a day off in between classes. This will fade after a few weeks and when you feel brave enough you can do classes on consecutive days and also back-to-back classes (I do body pump followed by body combat which i find a good combo).

Body pump is weight training to music, lots of reps. Its good fun and a really sociable class. As its not cardio you do not become a sweaty mess if you start with quite low weights. You are in control of your weights so you do as much/little as you feel like (remember to put more weight on for bigger muscles like your legs and back).

More tips for not making a fool of yourself:
invest on decent length tops that cover your belly and don't ride up.
invest in good sports bra.
dri-fit or clothes that wick the sweat away are good for preventing sweat patches.
take a towel and water.
Have some decent trainers to support your joints.
If you have long hair find some way of securing it away from your face/body as hair gets really, really sweaty and will drip sweat all over you and everyone else if you leave it flapping around.

Take this from somebody who made all of the above errors in her first few weeksBlush.

Finally, enjoy!!!! I started going in february of this year and have lost 2.5 stone through exercise alone (carried on eating like a pig all the way through!), got back to pre-preg clothes and a size 10-12 finally!

Good luck, you can do it!

PatTheHammer · 06/11/2011 20:18

Woah, mega-post! Can you tell I love it!Blush

hazelnutlatte · 07/11/2011 05:41

Thanks for the tips patthehammer! Your circuit class sounds really full on - think might avoid that one for now! I might try a body pump class, it doesn't sound quite as scary!

You need to decide on what you actually enjoy.
I like choreography type classes and can't be doing with circuits. I don't like that you have 30 secs or 60 secs to do as many reps - I like the up for 2, down for 2 - everyone at the same time, in time to music iykwim.

I don't fancy Body Attack - waaaay to high impact for me. But love combat and sometimes like pump. See when the next block of 12 weeks is starting - then no-one will know the routine! My local council gym has a massive cross section of participants, 16 yo -right up to (quite a few) 60 ish es. Some haven't a clue and others are right into it. So no one sticks out too much!

The good thing about combat, pump etc is that every class in the UK should be on the same week - so you go to any class at any time and know the routine.

I love kettlebell as no impact but very good calorie burner, but still a wee bit not choreographed enough for me.

Have a look on youtube - most type of classes have some kind of video's on there.
