Hi encyclogirl - good you got out for 5 at least. One way of dealing with the running v. everything else is turning into a bad tempered cow when I've not been able to go out running. The family are pretty much tying my laces and pushing me out the door! How is your DD doing with her new school now? Hopefully more settled?

ibbydibby · 19/09/2011 12:11

Wow, so many posts, so much enthusiasm....

Re marathons, think London is a good bet, though if you don't live there it requires a bit of planning to get there the night before etc etc. (and therefore costs involved). This is the only one I have done so a bit biased, but think if I opted for a smaller one, would miss the support that the crowds give you. On the other hand friends did Edinburgh this year, and seemed to have had plenty of support there, there is also Brighton which is either a week before or a week after next year's LM.

Targets for me: 5k:

futurity · 19/09/2011 13:26

I've already been looking into accommodation for London IF I get in (big IF!). would probably go for these guys www.wrptours.co.uk/hotel_details.html as I like the idea of having my hand held for my first marathon!

encyclogirl · 19/09/2011 13:32

Sticky thanks for remembering my dd, she's flying it at school now. Really loves it loads. Her teacher is so lovely and she thinks he's the bomb!

Hmmm...nice strategy for getting my running done. I will use it! I did feel bad, as dh had just pulled apart our old kitchen island, was assembling the new one, and I piped up with "Oooh look the sun's out. I think I'll go for my run now..."

Que the silent teeth gnashing!

Runforfun congrats on your run, that's a fab time too. Also possum sorry I missed you during my big skim read. I need to stop doing that.

Wheelybug · 19/09/2011 14:00

Well done runforfun on your PB and for running without your own support. It does sound like such a great event.

peach - Enjoy Caballo tonight (and you too cest if you get there). I'd love to have gone but alas no babysitter.

orange - hope you DN is gettng on ok.

Encyclo - pleased to hear your dd is getting on well at school. It is hard to balance the running with everything else.

Did my first weekday run outside today with dd2 in nursery. Made the mistake of going for coffee with a friend first and drinking 2 large cups which made me feel a bit queezy without running. I did 5 miles - the caffeine made me run much faster than I'd planned but then kept feeling v. sick. but, that aside, it felt v. decadent to be out running in the sunshine on a monday.

I really must address my queasiness whilst running. Am thinking its probably not being hydrated enough beforehand as drinking (other than wine or coffee) is something I'm not v. good at. Must make an effort to drink water.

Wheelybug · 19/09/2011 14:03

Oh and I keep meaning to tell you about this book I am reading at the mo www.amazon.co.uk/Just-Little-Run-Around-World/dp/0007306202/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316437263&sr=8-1. Has anyone else read it ? Its about a woman who runs round the world to raise awareness for cancer after her husband dies. Its also a bit of a travel book- am enjoying it (although I think she might be slightly mad...)

MoshiMoshi · 19/09/2011 14:09

Oh dear. The wonders of a Kindle mean that Rosie Swale-Pope's book is now available to me to read. (thanks for the tip wheely!) I have read about her before but wasn't aware her book was so highly recommended!

Wheelybug · 19/09/2011 14:22

Hope you enjoy it moshi !

rhetorician · 19/09/2011 14:25

just vv. quickly while i scoff my lunch - encyclo been there, done that, lost the hair on the refurb...nightmare. Have DD going round saying 'up the dubs'! fabulous match.

if any of you plan on doing the VLM, my mum lives about a mile from the start and has been known to do b + b for people the night before...so don't let that put you off!

Pawsnclaws · 19/09/2011 14:52

Wheely I'm prone to feeling sick while running - I get it when I'm low on fuel but also when I've just had something to eat mid-run like a gel or powerbar. The trick for me is to get something in before the sickness starts, but easier said than done.

I've now passed the grotty chesty cough to DH so we're both sat miserable on the sofa. Feeling a bit better but not much. He's in the thick of it though so comfort food was required - bacon sandwiches and Heinz tomato soup. He's easily pleased poor love.

I'm in the ballot for next year's VLM, two rejections so far (I think). Don't think it's long till we find out? Rhet I hope your DP's first day went OK.

Wheelybug · 19/09/2011 15:16

Thanks paws - yes I think I'll have to experiment with fuel/hydration especially as runs get longer. Often its after a hill a while into the run (i.e. hills at the start are fine). I think today's was just v. bad run preparation. Which is a shame because I started off so well with a big bowl of porridge (although last night's few glasses of wine probably won't have helped).

Wheelybug · 19/09/2011 15:17

Sorry also meant to add - I hope you and your DH are feeling better soon (mmmmm..... bacon sandwiches...)

MoshiMoshi · 19/09/2011 15:58

tulip - first time at New Forest. 3rd raced HM. But it is a precursor to Abingdon which is what I am in training for so I haven't done any HM training as such. Are you ready for it?

futurity · 19/09/2011 16:44

paws last time I found out on the 28th September but officially they say they send the magazines in the first week in October.

DrNortherner · 19/09/2011 16:46

Afternoon all.

How are all the racers feeling today? Sore? Tired? A well earned rest is in order now guys!

I am debating entering the Blackpool HM next year, anyone done it before? trying to convince my mate....

MoshiMoshi · 19/09/2011 17:01

Isn't Blackpool where all the stag parties and hen parties head to, DrNo? Grin

OK running friends. I am about to share my secret with you (on a public forum no less). I am stressed. The reason is because DH has been offered a job in San Francisco and we are trying to work out the logistics of moving a family of 6 with 4 kids, 3 of whom are in school and one in nursery, and how on earth we might fit in a quick trip there without the aforementioned kids to be sure we want to do it before we accept the offer. DH wants us to go tomorrow but while the housekeeper is willing (bless her) I do not think she can cope with the kids 24 hours a day for the rest of the week (we would be back on Friday afternoon/eve). I also worry that something serious might happen as she is a bit dim not very, how shall we say, on the ball. I would never forgive myself if something should happen. On the other hand DH wants me to accompany him and doesn't seem keen to try visit on his own. Oh help.

MoshiMoshi · 19/09/2011 17:03

And I have bloody well be chosen to be class rep. Bugger bugger bugger.

MoshiMoshi · 19/09/2011 17:03

been chosen...

fannybanjo · 19/09/2011 17:11

Moshi wow! San Fran my favourite city in the world - what a dilemma though! No wonder you're stressed!

First, trust your instincts with the housekeeper. If you are worried then you won't enjoy the trip and although DH wants you to go, you're not going to be much use to him if you are panicked the whole time. Could he not go until friday, then you and the children join him over the weekend (maybe pull them out of school on thursday even and go then?) I know it's a long shot but then also the children will be involved?

fannybanjo · 19/09/2011 17:12

And take housekeeper with you as mother's help?! Grin

Themasterandmargaritas · 19/09/2011 17:44

Ooo Moshi, how wonderful. Why not take the littlest one with you and leave the older three with the housekeeper, ask a very good friend to be involved and check up etc They will be at school for most of that time anyway.

I'm telling you from experience, you need to go and see with him because if you don't go now but decide to all move there, you will find dh has a) rented a horrid house for you all b) chosen a not-quite-right school and c) will have leased a totally inappropriate car. Grin

Pawsnclaws · 19/09/2011 17:48

Moshi I love San Fran. Lovely running country ..... assuming no family can help out to that extent, would it be possible to get a horribly expensive short term nanny in as an emergency measure?

peachsmuggler · 19/09/2011 18:26

Wow Moshi, how exciting! And how stressful! Is DH's desire to go straight away based on needing to accept the offer sooner rather than layer, or is he naturally quite impulsive. You really need to go too to check it all out but could you even go next week, so you are less stressed about it?

Would it be permanent move or a fixed term contract?

Agree San Francisco is lovely, and of course there's the Big Sur Marathon...., ; )

cestlavie · 19/09/2011 19:25

How exciting Moshi. Love San Fran and visited friends working over there a few times. Think taking the kids for the trip might be hard - they'll be pretty frazzled so not sure how sanely you'll be able to look around everything you need to.

Good idea to maybe just take the little one. Is there maybe a combination of (overnight) nanny agency plus combination of good friends for the days who could get the rest of the children through?

stickylittlefingers · 19/09/2011 19:38

How exciting Moshi! FWIW, our way of coping with such moves has been to let DP do the scouting and the rest of us have just gone with it. I am a trusting soul! But we had the same problem of needing a reliable babysitter who didn't actually exist, and that seemed the best solution. Trying to do househunting etc with one/two little ones in tow just seemed a bad idea. I'm jealous though! I like disappearing off to live in a totally new place every 5 years or so Grin

That's good news encyclogirl - hope the kitchen gets done soon (and Envy of your island. Am I now to suffer from both garmin AND island envy?!)

Just back from DD2's swimming lesson. It's so warm in the swimming pool and I'm so sleeeeeepy.

Just seeing about entering the Richmond 10k. Are you looking at that DrNo?
