This is a continuation of the thread "Happy When We Are Running" for those of us who are committed to running in order to preserve a sense of ourselves and maintain a degree of sanity in our lives which are otherwise taken over by family and work-related matters.

All runners are welcome, experienced and newbies, if you are a keen runner. We promise to support you in your efforts and have a running (excuse the pun!) list of races (see below) which various of us have entered in order to provide advice and support along the way.

So what are you waiting for? Spring is here and there is no better time to enter those races you have been wondering about entering and lose those winter pounds, and all for free (well, as long as you have a decent pair of trainers suitable for your running gait Grin). Alternatively, if you don't want to race you can just join us to enjoy the racing vicariously and learn about training and what (not) to do along the way.

IreadthereforeIam - pleased you made it here. How is training coming along generally (despite the supposed 9 miler Grin)? Have you built up your longer runs to cover the distance? Any injuries?

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 22/03/2011 14:00

cestlavie I have had no problem with mine losing signal, that ha snot happenned yet. It is comfy to wear and dead easy to use. Not sure how it calculates pace tbh but if I am ambling at a 10 mm I can get it down very quickly by opening up into a sprint......

MoshiMoshi · 22/03/2011 16:08

Session completed although only did 9 miles as session was short due to the fact there was nobody at the clinic until 20 minutes after I was booked in. I reduced my weight to 70% to take the strain off my shin and calf and did my intervals at 10 mph (6m/m) which was very easy (perhaps because I was not completely weight bearing?) but I think the idea is to push my VO2 max and not to exhaust myself. Marathon running is completely aerobic which is why none of the training sessions seem as hard as those within 5K or 10K schedules I guess. It is the LOOOONG grind that wears you down instead!

thecoo · 22/03/2011 16:24

DrNortherner wash your mouth out - 10mm is not "ambling", it is my hoped for race pace for my 10 miler!

Moshi glad your session went well.

It gives me hope that so many of you are also short (I'm 5'3"), but takes away my excuse for being so slow... Did some 1 mile intervals today though (well ok, only 2 Blush ) which made me very out of breath and will hopefully teach me to run faster eventually. Or at least to stop being such a wimp.

I really want a Garmin now. Thanks to those of you who have shared about yours to give me some idea of what to look for.

It's nice to see so many new 'faces' on here - perhaps this shorter thread isn't as scary to join as the previous one! Welcome to those of you who've joined recently.

PenguinArmy · 22/03/2011 16:31

Since pg 10mm is what I generally aim for, but since as I haven't got back to pre pg fitness it's not bothered me. I've done a few faster ones for shorter runs, but I find I can't be bothered to warm up so just have a very slow first mile instead which brings my average down.

Thanks for the pf tips. If I come back to the UK I'll ask about the PFs. A part of me thought there's not much point now I'm pg again, but I have come to my senses

cestlavie · 22/03/2011 17:00

Thanks DrNo - I think I may have to invest in a Garmin...

Moshi I like that looong grind... it's the shorter faster distances that scare me!

PenguinArmy · 22/03/2011 17:47

well not having run for 7 weeks, I just did a 5 mile run (yes I know I suppose to do it yesterday)

Wheelybug · 22/03/2011 18:06

4 miles in the gym this morning - still not feeling very good so decided not to push it. Hoping I am better for the weekend.

Our Lidl is doing running stuff on Monday just in case anyone else has a Lidl near them. I have been quite pleased with the stuff I have had from them before.

SixtyFootDoll · 22/03/2011 18:11

Am going to run later when DP gets in from work, about 7.30, I am normally a morning runner so not sure how I will fare. Am hoping for 5 miles. Tthen won't get chance to go again before my park run on Saturday.

pawsnclaws · 22/03/2011 18:20

Can you just allow me a brief chance to scream?

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

Much better.

I'm sat here in my running gear - was hoping DH would be back by 7, out for 5 miles, time for a quick bath and a bite to eat. He's just phoned to say he'll be late. Sad

Not sure what time he'll be back, as it depends partly on First Crapital Connect as well. If I'd known I could have booked the gym!

PenguinArmy · 22/03/2011 18:21

That is frustrating, especially since the worse part for me is getting motivated to get ready in the first place

pawsnclaws · 22/03/2011 18:23

I agree - but then when you've decided you're going and then you have to hang round ..... will definitely make it out, just not sure when.

PenguinArmy · 22/03/2011 18:23

well good luck, I hope he's not too late

pawsnclaws · 22/03/2011 18:25

So do I or we'll be eating at midnight!

SixtyFootDoll · 22/03/2011 18:31

awwww no how annoying, am just about to get changed now, I willl go I will go.....

pawsnclaws · 22/03/2011 18:32

Think how good you'll feel when it's done, and you can sit relaxing and feeling all worthy ....

cestlavie · 22/03/2011 18:33

paws that is so annoying when you're all ready to go and can't for some reason. Unfortunately if it depends on First Crapital he might be faster running home himself!

pawsnclaws · 22/03/2011 18:39

cestlavie one of my colleagues used to do that regularly (OK so not all the way) - used to get off a couple of stops early and run home to Harpenden - it wouldn't surprise me if he beat the train there, frankly.

MoshiMoshi · 22/03/2011 19:52

Hope you are out running now, paws.

I am feeling really ropey. I woke with a sore throat and have generally ignored it today but cannot pretend any more that I am fine. I feel really tired and lethargic and weak. I hate being ill and was just thinking yesterday how marvellous that I have escaped relatively lurgy-free this past few months. Sad.

thecoo · 22/03/2011 20:14

Oh no Moshi - poor you! Dose up on vit C and get an early night if you can (is that possible with 4 kids?), perhaps you can shake it before it takes hold.

cestlavie maybe we can find a 2 for the price of 1 deal on Garmins Wink

Hope you got out on your runs pawsnclaws and sixtyfootdoll

Hello again sciencebint - Liath used to be on here too but she hasn't been around for a while (according to facebook she's back at work fulltime so maybe doesn't have time for MN). Yes, feeling v. nervous about sunday - a bit pathetic really as many are running much further on here. NOt as pleased with my training as hoped and hoping to feel less bunged up by then but I will make it round at least !

Moshi - hope you're feeling better very soon.

paws and sixtyfoot - hope you got out on your runs. I hate that 'standing in kit, waiting for DH to walk in bit'.

pawsnclaws · 22/03/2011 22:34

Well I made it out at least but not until 8 - just time for a 3.5 mile tempo run which I enjoyed - after months of plodding along slowly to build up the mileage it felt like I was flying! Still not feeling 100 per cent though, I felt really good running but the minute I got in I was coughing like an old codger on 40 a day. Just time to hop in the bath, eat dinner, load the carcwith assorted book bags/gym bags/cello etc and now off to bed.

Moshi sympathies on the lurgy, I feel like I've missed my last proper week if training but needed the rest. Have dosed myself up with Berocca and iron syrup and am just hoping for the best.

MrsWednesday · 22/03/2011 22:41

Eeek, sorry to hear you're feeling rough Moshi. Hopefully a good night's kip, some vitamins and a dose of your bloody-mindedness will fight it off.

I was also thwarted in my attempts to run today, had planned to run home from work (5 miles along the canal in the lovely sunshine) but got delayed at work. Have had to make do with 5 miles in the dark along the ring road - nowhere near as pleasurable but at least I got out.

Another shorty here, only 5 ft 4. And heading rapidly towards 40 (in August), hence the plan to try and do a marathon this year.

Wheely, I bet you will be absolutely fine on Sunday, you are probably a lot more ready for it than you think you are.

I've got an old Garmin, big square thing (205?) - it's as essential as my trainers, I hate running without it even though I barely use any of the functions of it apart from start and stop.

Happy running all.

PenguinArmy · 22/03/2011 23:52

5ft 4 is not short Grin I always wish to be 5ft 4 as it appears to be a minimum good height for climbing. I'm nearly always 2-3inches from reaching the hold.
