This is a continuation of the thread "Happy When We Are Running" for those of us who are committed to running in order to preserve a sense of ourselves and maintain a degree of sanity in our lives which are otherwise taken over by family and work-related matters.

All runners are welcome, experienced and newbies, if you are a keen runner. We promise to support you in your efforts and have a running (excuse the pun!) list of races (see below) which various of us have entered in order to provide advice and support along the way.

So what are you waiting for? Spring is here and there is no better time to enter those races you have been wondering about entering and lose those winter pounds, and all for free (well, as long as you have a decent pair of trainers suitable for your running gait Grin). Alternatively, if you don't want to race you can just join us to enjoy the racing vicariously and learn about training and what (not) to do along the way.

Well done to all you amazing ladies who finished today! Brilliant achievement.

Does anyone know when the ballot opens for the 2012 VLM?

pawsnclaws · 17/04/2011 19:25

Well done Gizmo, another fantastic time.

I was organising ds2's birthday party at an indoor snow centre today and got out at 3 pm, thought it was deceptively humid. By the time I got out for my run at 4 pm it had freshened up a little, but I have to say the heat is my nemesis. So respect to all of you for the conditions out there today.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 17/04/2011 19:35

Wow! Well done gizmo that is an amazing time! I am in awe of anyone who can run sub 4, more so now I have endured the pain of a marathonGrin

It was warm out there, not nearly as hot as Brighton but warm and sticky nonetheless.

Themasterandmargaritas · 17/04/2011 19:51

Doyou and Gizmo, bloody well done, what an achievement. Congratulations. Smile

Where's the Mosh?

I can't wait to hear all the details.

sungirltan · 17/04/2011 19:58

well done vlm'ers - i am more than in awe!

sfxmum · 17/04/2011 20:04

Gizmo fantastic time well done indeed Smile

peachsmuggler · 17/04/2011 20:19

Well done Gizmo! sorry you were disappointed with your time but I am in awe! Hope you are having a nice relaxing evening to celebrate your achievement.

Your post race celebrations sound just the ticket Doyou. enjoy!!

peachsmuggler · 17/04/2011 20:23

Good work on your 18 miles Mrsweds, hope you recover quickly. Are you doing 1x 20 miles in your training plan?

popsycal · 17/04/2011 20:32

popping my head in to check on VLMers....

MoshiMoshi · 17/04/2011 20:33

Quick post to say well done doyou and gizmo! it was so hot and I was stuck behind so many slower runners I ended up deciding to run an easy race and not kill myself, in particular, as I didn't want to end up one of the many roadside casualties. Chip time 3:27:30. Plenty of scope to improve on a cooler day and fewer runners to dodge. Lesson learnt: my Garmin does not work when splashed with water Grin!

Doyou you have inspired me - bugger cooking tea, I shall order a takeaway!

Kids all completely knackered after long day of playing in Greenwich Park with a number of their favourite grown ups, so i'm hopeful we shall now have a peaceful evening.

Sorry if I sounded a bit grumpy...my head has not really been in the right place about this marathon for months - my mistake for chasing a sub 3.40 target which is probably a bit ambitious considering DD is only 10 months old Hmm. So I got a bit tense and then cross when I found that the first 2-3 miles were impossibly crowded - had to walk a number of times due to sheer congestion.

And although it wasn't as hot as last weekend, the heat was definitely getting to me by mile 16. I can honestly say I have never felt so ill during a race: only the thought that I might be beaten my longstanding chum and race nemesis Winston kept me running at all. I was gagging to walk.

But, like childbirth, within 10 minutes of finishing I'm thinking about another one, so either I never learn, or it can't be as bad as I'm painting it Grin

A process much helped, by the way, by the fabulous and generous people from the Macmillan Cancer Fund, who not only allowed me into their reception as the guest of a mate of mine, but also gave me chocolate and a massage, even though I hadn't run for them. They are so getting my support next year!

drivingmisscrazy · 17/04/2011 20:36

Moshi it's still a fabulous time, I would die (probably literally too!) to be able to run a time like that...I totally respect you for that decision , too. Congratulations!!

gizmo · 17/04/2011 20:43

Moshi terrific! And what a great result! Always a good plan to leave something on the table for the next race, eh?

Did you enjoy it?

futurity · 17/04/2011 20:44

You are all amazing..I am loving reading about it all!

peachsmuggler · 17/04/2011 20:46

Ahhh Moshi, absolutely sterling effort! I know how much you wanted a sub 3.15 but it sounds like you made absolutely the right decision in the circumstances, and that is a truly great time by anyone's standards. Well done missus! Looking forward to the details when you have recovered. Hope the puppy let's you lie in tomorrow!

pawsnclaws · 17/04/2011 20:55

Moshi well done! It was a super warm day and I'm not convinced London is the right place for anyone to get a PB? Enjoy your celebrations, what an amazing achievement!

Wheelybug · 17/04/2011 20:58

Popping in from sunny wales to catch up on how everyone did today !! Very well it sounds - well done doyou gizmo and Moshi - sorry gizmo and moshi you didn't get the times you wanted but I'm guessing wiht those times you'll qualify for next year so you can try again !! But, you're all amazing and inspiring !

Hope pass and fasicle* had a good race too.

backwardpossom · 17/04/2011 21:03

Well done, doyou gizmo and moshi all brilliant. Such an achievement, very proud of you! X

PenguinArmy · 17/04/2011 21:15

I just wanted to say loads of well done's to all those in the VLM today :)

I'm going to bow out for a while, but wanted to say thank you for all the tips I've picked up. The outdoor climbing season is here and the weather in CA is too hot for me to run. Also I don't think my base fitness was enough to cope with the irregularity of my running now. Once bump is out I hope to return and I will work on my PFs in the mean time.

sfxmum · 17/04/2011 21:23

moshi great time well done

I am quite in awe of your achievements, even if some of you feel disappointed, experience is a great thing and I am sure there will be other opportunities to improve

MrsWednesday · 17/04/2011 21:26

Fabulous times Gizmo and Moshi, really and truly inspiring - ladies all of you are absolute heroines.

Moshi, sounds like you did totally the right thing given the circumstances, and your time is brilliant! Gizmo, I didn't realise you'd had a baby so recently, you must be incredibly proud of what you've done.

Hope you are being waited on hand and foot by your respective families. Amazing stuff.

MrsWednesday · 17/04/2011 21:31

Peachy, have got a 20 mile run planned next weekend, and if that goes ok I will start tapering. Lying on the sofa with ice packs now and feeling loads better so hopefully knee pain has just been a minor annoyance rather than anything major.

cestlavie · 17/04/2011 22:08

Just a brief one since on holiday but very well done to doyou, gizmo and Moshi. The temperature certainly seemed a notch too high today so getting those times was very impressive! I can imagine the last few miles must have been brutal as the mercury went higher and you were getting more and more exhausted and thirsty. Hard work indeed. You should all be proud of yourselves!

squix · 17/04/2011 22:22

gizmo and moshi - well done, just to echo everyone, all the finishers - your acheivements are inspiring.

drivingmiss - going for 2 hours for my 1/2 - which I think is a bit optomistic to be honest - I did a 1/2 - 7 or so years ago and finished at 2 hours 5 mins so that 2 hours barrier is teasing me. My long runs - which are currently at 12 / 13 miles are run at about 10.50 mins per mile and I can do my 1/2 pace for about 4.5 miles. All my training is going to plan, but really can't see how I am going to sustain that pace for the 13 miles - so the next few weeks are going to be all about working on sustaining that speed. Just hope the vibes on the day keep me going. Won't be too disapointed if I don't get the time though. Here's hoping. See you've got a few more 1/2s planed for this year - good stuff. I am thinking of doing the Great South Run in the autumn and lining up a few 10ks as well. The GSR will be with my dad and my sister who are both fast (despite dad being 64 and sister having had a baby 6 months ago) so that's going to be my goal over the summer.

drivingmisscrazy · 17/04/2011 22:32

yes, I did a half in 2h10 in 2008 on a very tough, hilly course but (a) I am 3 years older now and (b) I can't train as systematically these days, so I'd hope to get under the 2 hour barrier by the end of the year - trying to space them a bit too
