This is a continuation of the thread "Happy When We Are Running" for those of us who are committed to running in order to preserve a sense of ourselves and maintain a degree of sanity in our lives which are otherwise taken over by family and work-related matters.

All runners are welcome, experienced and newbies, if you are a keen runner. We promise to support you in your efforts and have a running (excuse the pun!) list of races (see below) which various of us have entered in order to provide advice and support along the way.

So what are you waiting for? Spring is here and there is no better time to enter those races you have been wondering about entering and lose those winter pounds, and all for free (well, as long as you have a decent pair of trainers suitable for your running gait Grin). Alternatively, if you don't want to race you can just join us to enjoy the racing vicariously and learn about training and what (not) to do along the way.

Wow.... Took a long time to catch up on all the posts....

Had a busy week..... Managed to fit in some runs and can see a steady if very gradual improvement .... No run today though ... 12 mile walk instead as out in tin tent in peak district

cestlavie - never had a problem with I phone gps but havent really put it through it's paces for intervals tho... Have found an intervals app that I need to try out - based on times rather than distance

paws once again good luck for tomorrow...

Hoping to fit in a tun tomorrow before Sunday dinner, to offset the wine at the very least.....

Themasterandmargaritas · 10/04/2011 09:15

Welcome suntan. Smile

Penguin - don't be daft you can't go now,we won't let you.

There are a few of us who have been here forever, sfx, peachy, wheely, hatty, MrsW and Moshi and I can tell you there have been some serious tumbleweed moments when we have been either too busy to post or too ill or too something else and this now is probably the fastest moving this thread has ever been. Grin Also it appears you now have summer in the UK, the thread always picks up March to September. Wink

People of all abilities are welcome here. When I started I could only run 5k and these people here motivated me to keep going. Fast, slow, long or short it matters not a bit, it's about enjoying (in the loose term of the word) running.

So I 'enjoyed' a 15k run this morning in 22 degrees plus hills. I ended up totally covered in that fine sweaty salt layer that Paws will know so well by the end of her day today. Grin I'm not even going to mention how long it took, because that is just not the point - I'll never be a Moshi. Grin

drivingmisscrazy · 10/04/2011 11:21

masterandmaragaritas that's a great post - really captures what it's all about for the ahem, slow coaches of this world more leisurely runner. I've really slacked off my distance due to work and child commitments, but actually it seems to have made me faster...need to sling in some good long runs in the next 5 weeks before my first HM on May 21st which will take place here I'd like to see the elevation, although I think the second half is downhill. I'll be happy with about 2h10min, although I'd like to get under the 2 hour mark by the end of the year.

It was very warm out today, even at 9am - about 15 degrees which is heading up to the outer edge of my comfort zone, heatwise. Ran without water - 8.5k - and quite fast (for me) - am trying not to depend on water if I'm running for less than an hour.

Dying to hear how paws got on. Have a good day everyone!

Wheelybug · 10/04/2011 14:13

Another one waiting to hear from Paws. My sources tell me it was very hot.

DrNo - sounds like they might suit me. I had a quick look and they seema similar level of support to the ones I wear. I'm a 4-4.5 normally but have a feeling my Brooks are a 5.5 o that may be the only issue. If you find no other home for them I would be v. happy to try them and can always post on if no good.

Penguin - this thread is for everyone ! I'm now finding it difficult to keep up the last few days but M&M's post is exactly right. I find this thread very inspiring.

Hoping to get out for 7 miles later when its a little cooler (i.e. when my lunch has gone down).

Agreed the other day to do the SHock Absorber Women's novice triathlon July 2012. Must get a bike and have some swimming lessons before then !!

Wheelybug · 10/04/2011 14:13

sorry - and welcome Suntan ! Glad to hear the training is going well.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 10/04/2011 16:07

Wise words there Masters. This thread is much busier and I dip in and out depending on work and stuff but everyone is very welcome. I consider myself a plodder, getting more so as the weather heats upGrin, all slower runners are very welcome, as are the more speedy onesGrin

It is really warm here on the South Coast.

3 Miles for me today. I'm hating tapering, my legs feel stiff and I generally feel out of sorts. Can't wait until this time next week when (hopefully) I will be done and dusted and can get back to decent length runsConfused

cestlavie · 10/04/2011 18:28

Also waiting to hear on paws ... got another friend doing Brighton today and still waiting to hear from him! Perhaps they're all drinking cold beers or wine on the beach?!

sfxmum · 10/04/2011 18:32

dh is a tad shattered after his 13miles yesterday
I only did 4

Wheelybug · 10/04/2011 18:50

10.5K this evening - twas hot so feel for Paws etc running much much more than that ! Braved me baggy shorts (didn't think the world was reading for my new tight shorts) and they didn't chafe. However, my trusty vest that I've been wearing happily for ages chafed around the arms and is now really sore. Grrr.

Well done to yuor DH, AND YOU, SFX

Wheelybug · 10/04/2011 18:51

my baggy shorts, not me baggy shorts. Not sure where that came from Grin

pawsnclaws · 10/04/2011 19:02

Well I'm alive - just! The heat was just awful - no shade at all other than the bit through Hove miles 15 to 19, so just baking heat and little in the way of a breeze. Very bad sunburnt arms despite lots of cream. Got back to the car at 4 and the temp was showing as 25.5!

Anyway - time a lot slower than I had hoped - 5.54 I think - but glad to be alive and get round. Huge thanks to the lovely people of Brighton and especially Hove who turned their garden hoses on us and kept us going!

Will post again when less pooped - off for an early dinner and bed.

Themasterandmargaritas · 10/04/2011 19:11

Hooray well done, what an achievement in that heat.

Wheelybug · 10/04/2011 19:14

Yeah ! Very well done Paws !!! You did it Grin. Enjoy your meal and your early night.

DrNortherner · 10/04/2011 19:25

Paws CONGRATULATIONS!!! Well done, you did it! I can not beleive it was 25.5, Bloody hell. That sounds like torture. Hope the sunburn is not too bad. Hope you enjoy a much deserved huge dinner and early night.

Wheely PM me your address and I'll post the trainers to you. Then if they don't fit just pass them on Smile

Penguin bad news about your back. Hope nothing too serious?

I spent the day at Redcar beach with ds, dh, my Mum and the dog. Had a ball. Showed dh some of the route we will be running and we saw loads of runners out training. Made me feel very Envy

No run planned tomorrow, running club on Tues and Weds I am trying out a drill session that is coached by one of the elite runners from our club, am intrigued by what he will do.......oh, I have the week off work too. Yippee!!

drivingmisscrazy · 10/04/2011 19:37

does anyone have any good bra recommendations (I guess cestlavie can hold back on the advice for now Wink)? I had some Adidas ones that I loved, but they are nearing the end of their natural life now and I need replacements. I am about a 36B, so moderate of bust :o

sfxmum · 10/04/2011 19:44

Hurrah for Paws! Congratulations on your achievement Grin go rest and treat yourself

Bra I have about 3 Shock absorber different types, the one specifically for running is quite good, a bugger to put but no real wobble (34F)

DrNortherner · 10/04/2011 19:46

I love my shock absorbers. I have 2. Then I have a reebok one which is not as supportive and is no good at certain times of the month. Think I paid about £30 for my last shock absorber one, but worth it.

cestlavie · 10/04/2011 19:49

Think I'll sit out that advice as you say drivingmiss!

Well done you paws. Just been swapping texts with a friend who ran it today. He was targeting 3.45 and ended up absolutely shattered finishing in 4.11 - sounds like the heat was shocking and there were a lot of people really struggling out there. Enjoy a well earned dinner and the early night!

sungirltan · 10/04/2011 20:02

i wear a shock absorber too - got it in the slae in debenhams though they do sell them in tkmaxx too. mine is a bit big now since i have stopped bf but its still doing a fine job.

meanwhile i need to download some new running music - any recommendations? im kind of sick of rihanna and a load of random house music i've got but anything that isnt super up tempo makes me give up!

peachsmuggler · 10/04/2011 20:29

Hurrah! Well done paws, am so proud of you!!! That heat would have killed me, am so glad you made it in one piece. Hope you have a great relaxing evening, basking in the glow of your achievement. Can't wait to hear all the gory details!

Penguin, sorry about your back, look after yourself, but stick around here. It is very fast moving but very inspiring. Am hardly running at all at the moment, but getting a lot of the motivation to get out there from everyone here.

Shock absorber all the way here, and am pretty small on top Blush but it is so comfy and no movement whatsovever. I got it when I was still breastfeeding DD and I have shrunk somewhat but still find it does the job!

Welcome sungirl!

Master do you have anwhere without hills or are you just hardcore? Wink

peachsmuggler · 10/04/2011 20:37

Oh and mean to say thanks Wheely and Mrsweds re. scan advice! Managed to relax very briefly before normal anxiety resumed. Might just have to accept it will be like this for a while, and be at one with my inner basket case Smile

drivingmisscrazy · 10/04/2011 20:49

I am a twit; came on and totally forgot to congratulate paws on a super effort; I once ran a 10k in heat like that and full sun and that was tough enough! lots of hydration for you! well done, you should be so totally proud of yourself

MrsWednesday · 10/04/2011 20:56

Brilliant!!! Well done Paws. How fantastic - you have run a marathon! You'll be able to do a Kenyan one with TheMaster after running for 26 miles in that heat. Hope you are enjoying well-deserved mountains of food whilst lying on the sofa with your feet up.

Handy advice about the bras, I am suffering from some chafing today after my long run (17 miles! Got lost Blush).

sfxmum · 10/04/2011 21:00

sungirl re music perhaps not your thing but I love indie soup runner mostly because I don't like stuff like Rihana Grin

peachy sorry missed the scan news, so pleased, it is indeed hellish and a wonderful moment of relief and joy, basket case allowed, wishing you all the best

sungirltan · 10/04/2011 21:11

thanks sfxmum - actually i dont like rihanna that much but i find my motivation is so much affected by what i'm listening to. ergo i listen to eric prydz and i run really well - listen to fountains of wayne then i slow to a stroll and enjoy the views over devonport - emjoyable but not so productive!
