Ive never ran before and i need to change my lifestyle as the tiredness is the financial stress and theres nothing i can do about it.

Do i treat myself as a normal healthy person (with no hpb, chronic tiredness etc) or do i have to take it alot easier? incase I'll end up more ill!! (im 1.5 stone heavier than my target weight).

ive also signed up on the www.running4women.com too.

thanks

If you google 'couch to 5k podcast' - you will find loads of different podcasts that literally take you from the couch to 5k in 8 weeks!

Sorry - but the usual podcast I use is not working at the moment link here incase it is soon

All you need is a decent bra and decent running (specifically running) shoes. and

Tis easy peasy - honest! Smile

Furball · 29/01/2011 07:18

it works so you only run for 1 minute at a time to start off.

BikeRunSki · 29/01/2011 07:52

Take it very easy. Start by walking for 2 mins and running for 30s. Gradually increase how long you run for and decrease how long you walk for. Walk/run for about 15 mins to start with, and increase your total time out too. This is what Couch to 5K does for you.

As furball says, invest in high impact sports bra and proper running shoes. Find a proper running/sports shop - Up and Running are nationwide and they are quite good. If you are anywhere near Sheffield Accelerate in Attercliffe are amazing and in London I'd recommend Run and Become in Victoria or SheActive in Covent Garden. They should be able to sell you a high impact sports bra too, although I like the M&S ones (beware that their sizing seems to bear no relation to reality at all). For shoes, you need a good hour and a half to get properly fitted and be prepared to spend £70+.

Don't buy running shoes mail order, and don't buy general purpose trainers.

You can also get a digital watch where you can set it to bleep at intervals, to tell you to change running/walking.

And I can't run without my iPod. If I have music, then I can run for miles. Without it, my feet don't move at all.

You might want to discuss with your GP if you have health concerns. Mine wanted to keep and eye on me for a couple of weeks when I started running after my CS. I'm sure yours will be really chuffed that you want to do something to help yourself - and good for you too.

I find it helps if I run the same route every time (I go out 3-4 times a week) so I can "feel" it getting easier.

Despite my MN name, I had not run for 18 months until about a month ago, and could do with loosing a stone. I started again on New Year's Eve with 2min walk/1 min run. I started doing a 5Km route from home and can now do it without walking - will have to find a longer route. I do it when DH is putting DS to bed every other night (he goes out the other nights when it is my turn for bed time). It's a great feeling and I feel so much better. My clothes fit better too.

For interest and inspiration, pick up a copy of Runner's World (WH Smith, big supermarkets). It always a picture of someone scary-skinny in tiny shorts on the front, but the inside is quite interesting and inspirational, even for newbies.

Have a look at Rea.

Have a look too at Real Buzz website too - all about healthy lifestyle and incorporating sport into your life. There's a section on running and a section on women's fitness too. And a route planner, so you can measure how far your run is, and blogs and forums too. It was my forum of choice before I discovered MN when I was pg.
Real Buzz

Good luck and keep it up. The first 10 mins is hell, but it gets better I promise Smile.

Well done for getting started....

I went out today for the first time in weeks after an asthma flare up - doesn't it feel good to have done it :)

You might also like Womens Running magazine - slightly more aimed at women and beginners.... And it has a website too - I would link it but am crap at that when posting from my phone but it's www.womensrunninguk.co.uk

Happy running :)

Sounds like you've caught the bug! Wink You're right to feel proud of yourself. Running is fab, but so many people don't realise this, so you've done really well to get out there and try it.

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 09/02/2011 21:05

Well done biglips .... Keep on running... A few weeks and you'll be amazed...

Plan yourself a treat every so often too... When I started last year, after the first couple of weeks I bought some new gear, and I kept a plan on the fridge so I could tick off sessions as I finished them (I used an 8 week plan and actually finished it in 6 weeks by doing 4 sessions a week instead of 3)

I am now starting back after a long enforced break, but was pleased to still be able to run 5 mins at a time, so I hope that in a month I will be back to running 5k in about 30 - 32 mins

If you want to keep posting on here, I'm happy to be a virtual running partner and give you some support....

hellion · 10/02/2011 15:46

Have you visited the runengland.co.uk website. My friend runs one of these sessions and she has a small group of runners/joggers that meet once a week, and do a short jog around the park at a pace that suits (ie no pressure). I think there are other schemes around England as well. Good luck.
