My DH has had this (a running injury of the knee) for three weeks and is unable is run for more than a few minutes before having to stop. There has been no improvement at all in that time. He is a devoted runner, runs 6 days a week usually, is in a running club, does loads of races and it is 95% of his social life! He has been to see a sports physio and tried stretching, iceing and compression. Won't go back to get orthotics as says this will only stop it reoccurring, not cure it.

Now DH says he will just have to accept that he can never run again and is very Sad. Has anyone got any advice about overcoming ITBS?

I've had ITBS, on the outer right leg. Oddly, it never manifested itself while running; only after lying down sideways, e.g. asleep or watching tv

My phsyio did a deep and painful massage of my leg, advised heat packs, a stretch exercise 3 times a day, and recommended running a golf ball firmly down the thigh to knee while sitting upright.

He didn't say lay off the running, probably because the ITBS didn't interfere with it, so I haven't. It's much better now, 4 weeks later.

On the other hand I do not run every day or for very long.
Terribly obvious, but your DH DOES run a lot, possibly overdoing it? Googling the ITBS websites can make gloomy reading as it can be along haul.

Reading this back, doesn't seem overly helpful, as our cases differ in important respects.

Thanks for reply, DH going back to see physio today. Hoping they will suggest something new and give him some hope of at least being able to manage short social jogs again!

Hi just cruising on here because I want to post a question about creche facilities in gyms when I saw this...I'm a Bowen therapist and have treated ITB syndrome in a woman in ran marathons very successfully. If you don't know what Bowen is then google it and look at the Bowen therapists professional association website where you can read case studies about sports injuries and find a therapist local to you. It could be a saviour for your husband Grin

Agree, very treatable by massage/stretches. Def won't stop him running longer term!
