Dh is a bit overweight, but also a very large build. 6'4", broad shouldered and just big.

I am a runner, but he says running is not for him. He maintains that at his age, weight and size, impact sports would not be a good idea.

He is not keen on football.

Not rugby - he is blind without his glasses.

He wants to exercise to lose a bit of weight.

He is joining a gym, but not massively enthusiastic about it.

Any other ideas?

I suggested squash or tennis.

cycling?

thumbwitch · 26/09/2010 15:48

not squash - badminton. Squash = hard on the knees, especially for a big bloke. Badminton a lot easier until he gets good.
Swimming and cycling also good because non-impact - better to start with.

Defo cycling

One of those military keep fit courses?

KiwiKat · 26/09/2010 17:05

Cycling and swimming, definitely. And for fun, if not for fitness, bowling. Great fun but not to hard on the body.

YunoYurbubson · 26/09/2010 17:33

Cycling, swimming and badminton - all good ideas. I shall suggest them. Thanks all.

Cricket
Ten Pin Bowling
Dancing - not ballet, maybe, but something you could to together like salsa, Argentine tango, jive etc.

onimolap · 26/09/2010 17:43

At the gym, do they have concept rowing competions? Ie racing on machines - could also be a way into the water bourne version. His height would be an advantage, and have you seen how fit rowers are?

Earlybird · 26/09/2010 17:47

Walking/hiking
Golf (walk the course)
Swim
Rowing
Yoga - some types can be strenuous, and not only strengthen/tone, but do wonders for flexibility.

YunoYurbubson · 26/09/2010 17:50

Ooh, rowing, there's a thought. We live by the sea.

Roffle at dancing. Grin Maybe in a parallel universe!

Nice bracing dip every morning then.

Beach volleyball?

BikeRunSki · 26/09/2010 18:01

As A big bloke, he might suit mountain biking better than road cycling. My DB is 6'5" and 100kg and hasd got very fit and lost a lot of weight through mountain biking. He laughs at me and my flimsy little road bike!

nocake · 26/09/2010 18:48

I'd echo the cycling and swimming suggestions as they're both low impact. With squash and badminton he runs the risk of knee injuries.

JeffVadar · 30/09/2010 08:08

If you are by the sea you might have a gig rowing club nearby. That's great fun!

Skiing? I learned to ski when I was MASSIVELY overweight and took to it like a duck to water - gravity works in your favour! Wink

Rock-climbing? With added weight he'll soon muscle up as he'll need his strength.
