Running - still doing walk/run

AnnieJL · 23/07/2010 15:50

I'm doing a 10 mile race in October, have been running for about a year but have made incredibly slow progress.
I am up to 4.5 miles on a run but I still cannot run all the way and no matter how much I work on my pace I still have to stop to walk for a minute or so then run again.
Do you think I should aim at doing 4.5 miles without walking beforeI move up another half a mile?
I can still do a 10 minute mile with the walking. Desperately want to do longer runs so I mentally am prepared for the race.

Any thoughts?

I'm sure someone better qualified to answer your question will come along (I only do short runs) but IMO it would probably be worth increasing your run length - even if means walking some of it - and by increasing your stamina on distance, you might find you can then start to run more of it.

Also, are you running too fast? Better to run slower and keep going for longer I think. Once you are running consistently, you can then increase your speed.

Oh, and try the forums on Runners World website - some v knowledgable running types on there!

Agree with lola, you might be trying to go too fast. I spent ages trying to build up running/walking without making much progress - I was running as hard as I could for about 1 min then walking for 5. After a few weeks I decided to try running much slower, felt a bit feeble toddling along but was amazed at how much more distance I could cover without needing to walk at all. After a couple of weeks of that I found my speed was picking up naturally so I could increase the distance.

do you run on your own Annie?

AnnieJL · 29/07/2010 20:09

Yes, I run on my own. Never been good at running alongside others as their pace puts my pace out of sync.

Had a bit of a breakthrough today, did a slow 4 miles and ran (jogged) the whole way! Even managed a 50 yard sprint finish - uphill!!!!

Felt like an real snail doing a slow jog but felt fantastic as I was running because I wasn't huffing and puffing!

Ready to walk at 3 miles but 'Eye of The Tiger' came on my ipod and I thought 'fuck it - if Rocky can do it so can I!'. It was one of those 'bring it on' moments...

Going to do a 5 mile run at same speed next week to see how I get on.

good for you!
I too am running really slowly but running. when I do 4 miles regularly at snailspeed I will start alternating slow jog a little faster slow jogg to build up my stamina.
you will get to the 10m in no time!

Annie I wouldn't worry about it - I am a run/walker and did a half marathon which was mostly running but had to stop and walk plenty as well. I consider it as just being my style Smile

Have had a major breakthrough and did 6.5 miles today at a steady pace. Namechanged as last night I really wanted Rioja and yet said no as I am going to go for a run in the morning.

Feel great!

mousymouse · 25/08/2010 12:28

wow that is impressive.
I want to go for a run today but I am soo tired (bad night, ds with tummy bug)...should I stay in or go?
