We are approaching the 6th anniversary of Brexit, or I suppose the 5th, if you count the period of transition as "in."

Since then, the world has endured Covid-19, seen war in Ukraine and many other things. Brexit has had reduced salience in the minds of many people recently.

When digesting the latest setbacks to befall the elite who govern our islands, a phrase I keep returning to, is “OK, so now do you get it?”

Brexit is undoubtedly the biggest “OK, so now do you get it?” moment directed at our leaders in my life. It’s surely the largest since 1979, since the Labour victory of 1945? or even since the advent of universal suffrage?

The U.K. local elections in 2026, and subsequent national ones, could see a big increase in support for the Green Party and Reform U.K. Two parties with more different attitudes to European integration could scarcely be found, so Brexit’s salience in the U.K. may rise again soon
.
There are many electoral contests in progress or coming across Europe too (the Netherlands and France, for example) which will be worth paying attention to. Maybe the next questions we will face are less about "what next?" and more about "who's next?"

Relations between mainland Europe and the UK remain a worthy topic for discussion, whoever leads the nations of Europe, or leads the E.U. itself.

The Brexit damages was forecasted

Factual measured data demonstrates the forecasts did not happen. Examples include:

The treasury forecast 500,000 to 800,000 job losses never happened. Measured data proves that from 2015 to Q4 of 2024 unemployment decreased each year. That trend may have continued if Labour had not made it more expensive to employ people.

The treasury forecast GDP would drop 4% by Q4 of 2018 did not happen.

Maybe take a look at:

Ten predictions about Brexit that have not transpired | Conservative Home

We can now conclude that the alphabet soup of official bodies got it wrong. They have not yet proved terribly contrite about it.

Whoop whoop, not every negative thing that was forecasted happened

MaybeNotBob · 31/01/2026 18:12

Exactly! So many thing that were forecast did happen. So many more are ongoing.

The treasury reacted to try and stop some of the worst things happening, which would otherwise have happened (just so EEmigrant can claim all is hunky-dory), but that has also cost the country untold billions.

And the damage is still happening, if not getting worse...

Basically yes, among many other political positions I take, yes I'm a Trump supporter. I certainly would be a Trump voter if I lived in America (I live in the U.K.)

Him slagging off dead British or other nation's soldiers is really bad and I don't like it at all. That said, Europe's collective failure to acknowledge that the United States military can achieve whatever it damn well likes un-aided by U.K. forces or anyone else's is just absurd. It wouldn't be pretty, but they'd do it.

Lastly, as I've said many times on here national self-determination matters. Denmark basically doesn't care about Greenland, otherwise they'd be defending it properly. So, if a majority of Greenlanders want to sell their homeland to the USA they should be at liberty to do that. Newsflash: They don't and they won't, and that's fine.

You'd vote for a convicted sex offender. Wow. Just wow.

Considering his oppoent had deteriorated cognitively to the point where he was being hidden from the media until he blew up on the debate stage I don't think it would have been a particularly difficult choice.

Yes I'm sure Spain's government would be delighted to have Europe's second largest cash cow back in the herd. Got some railways that need repairing I think(!) Maybe collect what's due from your own taxpayers, then spend their money, eh Spain. Pricks.

What, Kamala Harris? Because that was what was on the ballot in 2024. So you would have chosen the convicted sex offender instead. I repeat: Wow.

Agriculture represents approximately 0.5% of UK GDP. Approximately 60% of agriculture’s output is consumed in the UK.

The reduction in exports to the EU is partly offset by increased exports to non EU countries. Either way, the estimated decline doesn’t make any noticeable dent in the increase in service exports to both EU and non EU since 2019.

My soon to be SIL is Spanish. His parents had to sell their rental properties on the south coast of Spain since the 90/180 Schengen limits came into effect. Spain continues to campaign to relax the 90/180 for UK persons who have property in Spain

The treasury reacted to try and stop some of the worst things happening

The treasury forecasts did not happen. Examples include:

Immediate recession
500K to 800K job losses
Emergency budget that would cripple the country
4% drop in GDP by Q4 2018

Although not connected to the treasury report, David Cameron made the statement that Brexit could cause WW3. That didn’t happen either.

Some will be worse off since Brexit, but not the majority such as the 83% of the working population in the service sector.

Also a massive hypocrite, given he lives in Monaco where 76% of the population are immigrants.

EEexpat · 17/02/2026 11:16

@pointythings

The population of Monaco is about 38,000. One on three are millionaires. The attraction of Monaco is simple,

It’s tax free for foreigners, excluding French.

The population is made up from

  • French: ~21.8% – 30%
  • Monegasque (Native): ~21.6% – 25%
  • Italian: ~15.3% – 19.5%
  • British: ~7.5% – 7.6%
  • Other: Significant populations from Switzerland, Russia, Belgium, Germany, Portugal, and the Netherlands.

So, Monaco has more people from EU member states than the UK.

DuncinToffee · 17/02/2026 11:37

The right sort of immigrants @EEexpat ?

That still makes Radcliffe a massive hypocrite. Monaco is populated by hypocritical tax dodgers of many nationalities. You can't moan about immigrants when you are one yourself.
