I've heard how us coming out of the EU has massively escalated the 'small boats' immigration. The figures/timeline seem to back this up. However, i don't understand why. Can someone explain it to me please (preferably like I'm a small child!). Thanks

ChatGPT can help with this kind of question.

MaybeNotBob · 03/09/2025 21:45

Because while we were in the EU we were part of the Dublin Agreement which allowed us to send them all back to France.

Anti-immigration genius Farage decided that to end immigration we should come out of this agreement.

And people still want to vote for him because of immigration...

WalkingaroundJardine · 03/09/2025 21:52

Yes, while in the EU there was an agreement that permitted return of the migrants to the first EU country of entry, which was not usually the UK due to geography. That went with Brexit.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 04/09/2025 12:55

@MaybeNotBob

Again, you have forgotten the fact that UK has lower immigration than;

Germany
France
Spain
Italy

MaybeNotBob · 04/09/2025 15:50

What have I forgotten about it? It is nothing to do with the question.

You're weirdly stalking me again...

Added to which Brexit coincided with the first wave of a series of humanitarian crises (explained to some extent here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn5e5q7w41eo ) and those crises set in motion an unprecedented movement of people. There was interplay between Brexit impacts and these other factors.

dizzydizzydizzy · 04/09/2025 16:25

I think it is a combination of many factors - the most obvious being that there is more conflict in the world and possibly (I'm only guessing on this one) more natural disasters due to climate change.

Added to that, due to Brexit, we no longer have data links to many EU systems that might help us manage things more easily. I don't know the specifics but I am thinking of stuff like criminal records, info on drug trafficking and people traffickers, the boarder force no longer having the ability to look up on the spot any information the EU holds about suspicious people (I'm assuming that they might still be able to email or make phone calls but no longer have access to the live database). I'm sure there are loads of other computerised systems that I haven't even thought of.

Who in the EU uses this agreement to send people back?

Wouldn’t it mean they’d all just send back to first point of entry and Germany / ROI would just use that.

MaybeNotBob · 04/09/2025 17:38

Why would I know? I know we can't use it.

Maybe you could try googling if you're so interested...

Not a great answer. I can see it doesn’t stack up as a claim then.

Farage wasn't even an MP when Brexit was being negotiated.
Give your head a wobble.

Do you really have that much trouble with basic comprehension?

So he had absolutely nothing to do with Brexit then!

Yeah, right. Muppet...

Do you really? All this aggro. Usually when people lose a basic point.

You haven't even managed a comprehensible point!

Germany CHOSE to disregard Dublin (thanks to the crazy Merkel policies) and accept migrants. They absolutely could have sent them back (and used to do this). Many EU states did this

I don’t think so. If German politicians had an answer to the rise of AfD they’d use it, Merkel was a while ago.

ROI too has a lot of disorder over this, if the DA meant they could simply send everyone somewhere else they would. Nearly all EU countries seeing a sharp rise in the right would.

I voted remain. But I just realised this is in the ‘Brexit’ topic. I’ve avoided it since the referendum as it seems to have posters like this.

They used to climb in the back of lorries for years but then the boats started and that became the route of choice. Then the criminals made a business out of it
supplying the boats etc…

TLDR

The Uk left the EU without any agreements in place
