Immigration/ brexit

I've heard how us coming out of the EU has massively escalated the 'small boats' immigration. The figures/timeline seem to back this up. However, i don't understand why. Can someone explain it to me please (preferably like I'm a small child!). Thanks

Excellent replies to MaybeNotBob which answers the OP question.

Yes, there has been an increase in boat arrivals, but, as you have pointed out, it coincides with:

Illegals switching from the back of Lorry which are easier to check because they pass through control points on the channel tunnel:

and,

World events such as wars which has resulted in millions moving westwards into the EU.

@DuncinToffee

If the Dublin agreement is effective, why aren’t;

Germany
France
Spain
Italy

using it to deport/return people?

Hellohelga · 06/09/2025 00:43

The Dublin agreement considers where an asylum seeker has family members as well as where they first arrived. It’s a two way process so the uk could make an application for someone to be transferred to another country for processing on the basis of them arriving there first, but another EU country could apply for someone to be transferred to the uk on the basis that they have family here. The number of transfer is much lower than the number of applications and sometimes there were more DA transfers into the UK than out. So I don’t think that’s the reason.

I think it’s PP said, they used to come in lorries, but now we have post Brexit border checks so they switched to boats, and a people trafficking industry has sprung up.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 06/09/2025 01:24

We couldn't and didn't send them back to France despite the Dublin agreement so I can't see why brexir gets blamed for the hordes of migrants washing ashore

So, why do remain supporters think that the UKs decision to leave the EU is the sole reason why boat arrivals have increased?

@MaybeNotBob
@DuncinToffee

As advocates of the theory that Brexit is the sole reason why boat arrivals have increased you may wish to answer that question too?

Also, my question;

If being a member of the Ray is key to immigration control, why does; Germany, France, Spain and Italy have higher immigration levels than the UK?

has not been answered.

DuncinToffee · 06/09/2025 09:29

@GlobeTrotter2000

Why have no other countries any interest in following the UK's exampleof leaving the EU?

Ask yourself that question.

I’d be interested too. Usually people deflect or get angry.

@Hellohelgapoints out the limitations in process and numbers for the Dublin Agteeement.

‘Hth’ Not really given the limitations below and that no other country is using the DA to the extent people say.

@GlobeTrotter2000

Yes @DuncinToffee I agree. I didn’t say Brexit is the sole reason, it’s not. But it is one reason why traffic has switched from lorries to boats.

World events are at play too. I think Syria being on the Med started a big European migration via that route, and once the boat men set up in business it continued.

I also think that people coming by boat are only a small part of immigration and people are making it the whole focus. Around 350,000 Ukrainians have come here since 2022 via sponsorship (approx 250) and family scheme (approx 100). That’s nothing to do with Brexit or boats, and no one has an issue with it. BTW I’m not saying I have an issue with it - I think it was the right thing to do.

@MaybeNotBob

Again, you have forgotten the fact that UK has lower immigration than;

Germany
France
Spain
Italy

Have you forgotten we have a lower land mass than those countries too

DuncinToffee · 06/09/2025 10:53

If any of you can share a report that states Brexit had no impact on increasing boat crossing/immigration, I would be very interested.

MaybeNotBob · 06/09/2025 12:18

More "whataboutery" from the Brexshiteers.

About what we would expect...

This level of argument is about what is expected. It really is dire.

I suppose these people will explode if Reform do well at the next GE.

DuncinToffee · 06/09/2025 12:41

And you will be overwhelmed with joy, I suppose

If Brexit is such a success, why are countries like Germany, France, Spain, Italy not following it?

Wilders in the Netherlands quickly decided Nexit would be a very stupid idea and not do anything about controlling immigration.

The irony! More whataboutery! From someone who hasn't put out a single argument...

EasternStandard · 06/09/2025 12:47

Why not ask people instead of assume. Brexit board really is the tail end of discussion nearly a decade after the referendum.

DuncinToffee · 06/09/2025 12:48

Did you aks, or just assume when you posted 'I suppose these people will explode if Reform do well at the next GE.'?

DuncinToffee · 06/09/2025 12:49

Brexit happened, the consequences are ongoing

MaybeNotBob · 06/09/2025 13:20

But they come on here to try and deflect, because they can't deny the damage that Brexit has done, and continues to do, to the country.

MaybeNotBob · 06/09/2025 13:26

But hey...

Immigration/ brexit
GlobeTrotter2000 · 07/09/2025 16:26

@DuncinToffee

If Brexit is such a success, why are countries like Germany, France, Spain, Italy not following it?

I don’t remember any of those countries having a referendum on EU membership. Questions which are not asked can’t be answered.

You could ask AI?

GlobeTrotter2000 · 07/09/2025 16:34

@DuncinToffee

Is AI allowed to vote?

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 07/09/2025 16:49

WalkingaroundJardine · 03/09/2025 21:52

Yes, while in the EU there was an agreement that permitted return of the migrants to the first EU country of entry, which was not usually the UK due to geography. That went with Brexit.

Correct ... nobody bothered to tell us that when voting for brexit.
