Apparently we need a tunnel. Just like we needed the £53 million failed Garden Bridge.

Nice little earner for anyone involved.

Not seen anyone calling what youve said as 'fake news' , and of course people voice their opinions, we have a regular poster called Louise here now I disagree with every political point she makes but shes genuine and has genuine reasoned arguments that she believes makes her case and she is always willing to listen, never enough to change her mind though Grin but I've already said I dont think youre a bot but you are making bot arguments, well if that 50% falls to 48% then its a sure thing

@KonTikki

Personally I always thought Inderpendence and rejoining the EU would be an uphill struggle. The EU doesn't do Nationalism for obvious reasons. And Scotland will fail to meet the criteria for the Eurozone. Quite apart from whose currency they will use to achieve entry.
They can use any currency they jolly well like. As long as there's a plan.

But if I hear even one whisper of "it's our pound" then I would cancel any celebrations for independence because it ain't happening. It's arguably the biggest single reason 2014s vote was no.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 01/03/2021 16:35

Im sure a lot of the arguments will be Scotland needs us more than we need them and tbh the English need to knock that off because it doesnt seem to go how they think it is, Im hoping an independent Scotland will give a roadmap for Wales to emulate to get us out of this abusive polygamous marriage that England doesnt want us to leave

DGRossetti · 01/03/2021 16:42

Which is a weird one, really. To the nationalist Scot it's bollocks. To a Unionist it's surely patronising. And to an English Nationalist it's an excellent reason to jettison the poundsucking leeches they have always called them ....

There are also rather unfortunate echoes of "The EU needs us more than we need them" which may not fly very well in the coming months.

Peregrina · 01/03/2021 16:44

All through the weekend, LBC were running government export advertisements for small businesses: export to Tokyo, Mexico City, Toronto ... Japan, Mexico and Canada are members of CPTPP of course - the free trade pact we have applied to join.

So what? They can hardly say "We've buggered up exporting to France, Italy, Germany, Netherlands... so how about trying to export literally half way across the world. And guess what, some of these countries were once part of the British Empire, so they owe us."

TatianaBis · 01/03/2021 16:49

Not all independence movements are the same.

The separatism of Scotland is based on having a different socio-political mentality to the English imo, and being dominated by English right wing politicians.

Similar to the Irish independence movement and formation of the Republic.

The nationalism of Brexiters it’s just bigotry and jingoism dressed up as politics. “Liberation” from the EU is just a delusion without any particular benefits.

ListeningQuietly · 01/03/2021 16:52

and there's the huge problem of bordering a non-EU country which is likely to be hostile
Greece seem to cope OK with bordering 3 non EU countries
(and prior to 2007, four)

Scotland is larger by both Population (9) and Economy (10) than many EU countries.

And if it were to join the EU, Subsidiarity would be the order of the day.

However, one of the threads of the Leave campaign was how "unEnglish" the EU were.

The whole think is really this sketch with countries.

TatianaBis · 01/03/2021 17:02

“unEnglish”

Cf jingoism.

What they really mean is that the EU is not right wing enough and they don’t feel in they’re in charge in the way they were the Empire.

how about trying to export literally half way across the world

I think that was always the remit wasn't it? Striking our own free trade deals all over the world.

Virtual Power Mission trade conference with India started today;

Peregrina · 01/03/2021 18:24

The right win trying to kid themselves that they can get the Empire back.
Wonder how more visas for Indians will go down?

Wakeupin2022 · 01/03/2021 18:48

bucker are you Scottish?

If not, then you don't really know what being Scottish is!

I don't live in Scotland and I don't want Scotland to be independent!

But don't dis our National Heroes..........

Fine I imagine - all the British Indians I know live in big houses and pay for private schooling.

Because you've never been to London?

mrslaughan · 01/03/2021 19:52

......or only been in a v small part of London......

I also know quite a few Indian families who live in big houses and privately educate their children (normally 1 or 2) ...... I am not stupid enough to generalise that across the population......

TatianaBis · 01/03/2021 19:59

There is no part of London that has British Indians in large houses but not in corner shops.

Clavinova · 01/03/2021 20:00

mathanxiety
volumes going directly to France [avoiding the land bridge] were up 102%.

One obvious positive, which I mentioned in a previous discussion, and now mentioned your link;
Last year more than 150,000 lorries used the UK land bridge to reach continental Europe from Ireland.
Campaigners who want to see less congestion on Britain's motorways will not mind a significant reduction.

And does this mean the tunnel projects have now gone tits up?

I don't think long term projects are usually abandoned 8 weeks into a new trading relationship - I thought we were still waiting for Sir Peter Hendry [Chair of Network Rail] to publish his review of the proposed tunnel projects in any case.

The average British voter neither understands anything related to NI nor remembers anything related to NI for longer than a goldfish would

That's what one of the Scandinavian MEPs (I think he was from Finland) implied about the European Commission when they attempted to trigger Article 16;
'We have been discussing the Irish border in the European Parliament for years...then under small pressure they forget. I cannot understand it.'

Clavinova · 01/03/2021 20:05

You know a VERY strange subset.

I probably know the subset who would be granted visas in a trade deal: doctors, dentists, engineers, lawyers, business entrepreneurs and computer programmers.

I wonder why the UK Government has been paying for advertising features in newspapers?

Carrie’s War Pt II: Behind the scenes at No 10:

The civil service is becoming “collateral damage” in an internal briefing war in No 10, a senior Whitehall source said last night.

The warning came after reports of clashes between the prime minister’s fiancée, Carrie Symonds, and senior female civil servants.

A senior Whitehall source said there was little behind the claims and that civil servants were being used as fodder in a Downing Street power struggle. “It seems more like No 10 psychodrama,” the source said. “It does feel like the civil servants are just collateral damage and a convenient excuse to try and have a dig at her [Symonds].”

Allies of Symonds believe that hostile briefings are coming from people around Cummings. “Somebody appears to be using the weekend newspapers every week to attack Carrie,” a friend said. “They’re obsessional...

A friend of Cummings told The Mail on Sunday that they “wished Carrie and Dilyn well” but questioned whether “they should be running No 10 during a deadly pandemic”

So brown people are ok as long as they’re professionals.

A common Brexit mindset.
