We bought a (not inexpensive) wine fridge from Denmark online over a month ago, which we are told is stuck at the French border due to Brexit. Apparently, you can buy bacon from Denmark but not kitchen appliances.

time to move on isn’t it?

So you clearly haven't read one of the quality papers like the FT which reported a 40% drop in UK exports to the EU in January?

I suggest it's time that Brexiters are the ones who need to move on and to start putting your backs into making it work, since you wanted it so much.

Brexit is also bad for British new mums trying to heal their pelvic floor damage!

Just had my second baby 10 weeks ago, experiencing stress incontinence now - peeing when I sneeze! - so wanting to address it. Recommended the Perifit device by a friend who used it successfully. Website says free shipping worldwide - great!

But they're based in the EU (French invention I believe) with a US distributor also. Sipping to the UK now we're out of the EU will incur significant customs charges - VAT but also hefty handling fees.

I emailed a lovely customer services agent asking if they have any plans to get a UK stockist to avoid the charges - she said no, their UK business is negligible - essentially with 26 EU countries enjoying frictionless trade, we're not worth the hassle...

This will be true for so many businesses and industries. Can't believe how much this will impact us all going forwards. What a truly stupid, backwards, damaging thing these leave-voting idiots did to us. Just lunacy.

Flowers to everyone whose problems are far more important than this, too!

Peregrina, As I said personally I haven’t noticed anything detrimental since leaving the EU over 3 months ago and now nearly 5 years since the majority who voted, voted to leave the EU, time to move on isn’t it?
Oh, I see. As long as you personally haven't noticed anything detrimental, that's all ok then! We should all move on. You're so right. As long as you personally haven't been inconvenienced, the rest of us should just suck up all the varying major and minor issues we've faced, as clearly they're of no consequence at all.

MumInBrussels , Things inconvenienced me when in the EU, we’re you bothered, NO, so why should I be worried about any slight inconvenience to you

Yogatomorrow · 18/03/2021 19:14

What inconvenienced you - practically speaking - when the uk was in the eu?

I honestly can't think of anything that was inconvenient then that has become easier now.

wewereliars · 18/03/2021 20:20

What inconvenienced you about being in the EU Sirius 99?

If it costs under £135 then (if the overseas retailer registers with HMRC) then they charge you UK VAT and no additional costs occur eBay customs (So for European sales there’s little change, as previously we would have paid their VAT at point of sale - the difference being which rate they have - for France their VAT is also 20%)

If over £135 then they just sell as an export, so you pay 20% less to the retailer
On arrival at customs you get billed VAT, possibly a customs duty, and a handling fee - either fixed or a percentage depending on who it comes through

DH bought an amplifier from a German shop pre Brexit. It’s developed a fault. He needs a special number that goes on customs paperwork to return it for repair. The number is to track that it goes out and back ie not permanently imported to Germany. The store will accept the return and have sorted out the number but he can’t find a courier that will handle this for a consumer, only B2B.

Ironically he used to be a freight clerk so he knows exactly what’s going on and what’s needed, he just can’t find any way to actually send the thing.

if the overseas retailer registers with HMRC

Why should an overseas trader register with a foreign government's tax collecting agency?I can see that large firms may find it necessary to do so, small ones won't need the bother, especially if they can trade freely with 26 other countries.

Quite a few have done so

This is a non Brexit related change that occurred at the same time as we left.

Some companies have opted to refuse sales under £135, some have registered, some have no idea about it

Hence I added ‘if the overseas retailer registers’

Peregrina · 19/03/2021 07:07

I still think that's a valid question, whether some have done so or not.
Many people/firms pay taxes rather grudgingly to their own government, so they are not going to be enamoured of paying to a foreign one. Large Corporations e.g. the Amazons of the world, attempt to pay as little tax as possible, and manage to shunt payments around into low tax jurisdictions.

I personally have no idea whether it was a Brexit change or not. However, I became extremely suspicious of Government changes after seeing them dress changes up as 'the EU dictates that we must' when you find that the EU funnily enough, didn't dictate to the other EU countries.

The PostOffice should do that, or would the receiver do it from their end and just chargeback the costs?

He is going to try the Post Office. Thank you.

(He had already tried asking the receiver to arrange it - they say it's DH's problem)
