Good King BBBBaBoris looked out,
on the Port of Dover,
There the shit lay round about,
Deep around the stopover;
Brightly shone the moon that night,
Tho’ the frost was cruel,
When a poor man came in sight,
Delivering stuff for Yule.

“Bugger SAGE and stand by me,
We've all stuff that needs selling,
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?”
“Sire, he lives a good league hence,
The other side the EU;
Though relations maybe tense,
He's trying to get goods through.”

“Oh god I need another wine,
I have many crisis to consider:
We must tell them its all fine,
I must not be seen to dither.”
SAGE and monarch, forth they went,
forth they went together;
Through the nation's sad lament
and really crappy weather.

“Sire, our plight is darker now,
And the covid transmission stronger;
Fails my heart, I know not how;
To keep Tier 2 much longer.”
“Soon we can drop their wage.
And treat them all more coldly
In Britain's new chrony age
A time to rob more boldly.”

In their master’s steps they trod,
On the quest to get minted;
Each and every last sod
Needs to be fingerprinted.
Therefore, Christian men, be sure,
DWP claimants are processing,
Ye who now will bless the poor,
God its all so depressing.

Whether the sunlit uplands can be delivered is a moot point, but I do think that there are other Tories who could make a better job of being PM.

bornatXmastobequiet · 25/12/2020 22:16

But the better ones surely won’t want to be PM now?
I think it would be fitting if, having got the job he always wanted, and which turned out to be the most poisoned of poisoned chalices, Johnson was fated to not be able to escape from it. The Tories are very good at getting rid of leaders they don’t want. Maybe they will also be good at keeping a leader they don’t really want, but who is convenient in the long term as a scapegoat as Britain reaps the Brexit crop it sowed.

Peregrina · 25/12/2020 22:39

But why exactly does Priti Patel want a deal with the EU? We wanted to be Independent, didn't we?

There has to be a grain of truth for spin to stick, so I would be surprised if her spin quickly came unstuck. I am just waiting for Daily Mail stories about EU criminals and how the EU isn't co[operating with the UK.

Pan2 · 25/12/2020 22:43

Johnson is under zero pressure re sunlit uplands, or indeed anything else. There is no-one at all present to hold any member of this exec to account. And of course they know it, so can lie as much as they do.

I have managed to get though a full 24 hours without listening to the Liar In Chief, but have seen his leary, smug face. Which was more than enough. 'Put differences behind us?' Nope.

But Merry Christmas to thread, RTB and lurkers. Xmas Smile

Elephant4 · 25/12/2020 22:49

About Laura K She never analyses anything at all. Never says anything particularly interesting or insightful. Just repeats what the gov't says but with a frisson of emotion. Puzzling.

Yes. This is exactly. And it really bothers me. I'm not sure why. I hate it when things are this puzzling.

GeistohneGrenzen · 25/12/2020 23:19

As Pan2 says: 'Put differences behind us?' Nope.

I'll stick with my mantra of a couple of years ago which I probably posted under a different user name, but for me it still holds good...

Pragmatism - resilience - non-capitulation

My hope is that everyone here has made the best of today and stays strong throughout the New Year Flowers

Question for you all

Now we have a deal and no tariff on some goods.
But do companies still need to fill all the paperwork as it’s n expert out if the eu before they cross the border with the U.K.?
Basically, are we still having to deal with massives queues at Calais anyway?

I’m looking at my brexit stash and I’m wondering if I can start eating my way through it or not...

DrBlackbird · 26/12/2020 08:54

Is there any chance at all that this deal might not be agreed by parliament? Any chance that ERG have the power to nix it? I'm nervously looking for assurance that it's not a sleight of hand magic trick or a 'Johnson promise'.

TonMoulin · 26/12/2020 08:57

Imo there is a chance that the MEP and some european countries won’t agree to that agreement more than MPs rejecting it.

Remember what happened with Canada?

Yes, still customs. No tariffs but lots of paperwork and passport checks.
Whenwillow · 26/12/2020 08:58

I wonder if someone would clear something up for me? I heard on a podcast somewhere (The Bunker, possibly) that under WTO rules the EU side can't simply 'wave us through' (food, for example) because if they do it for us they have to do it for everyone.
However I understand that the UK have agreed to do just that for 6 months. Does this mean only for what comes via the EU, or from everywhere?
The conversation I was listening to was responding to suggestions that the EU would want the paperwork etc done 'out of spite'.
The links posted above say we won't continue to have frictionless trade.
I'm very confused.

DrBlackbird · 26/12/2020 09:04

Ton my guess is that the EU hauliers are ready i.e. those exporting from the EU to the UK because the EU has taken the time to prepare. Whilst the UK has signalled it's willingness to initially let goods in with few/no checks.

However, the question remains as to whether EU lorry drivers will return after the events of this past week. Eventually? For more money? But none too soon I'd imagine.

Whenwillow · 26/12/2020 09:05

Oh looks like I cross posted. Sorry.

Whenwillow · 26/12/2020 09:41

Re my question, was that only if there had been no deal at all? This is all too much for me, and I'm similarly eyeing my stash, uncertain of of how necessary it will be (though happy as always to be well stocked)

TonMoulin · 26/12/2020 10:42

I’m not sure Dr. If I was a truck ‘driver, I would twice, not the least because of the risk of catching Covid and being ill whilst in the U.K.

Arrrg....

Back to deal with our shower that is leaking water in the kitchen instead...

OchonAgusOchonO · 26/12/2020 10:46

@Whenwillow - However I understand that the UK have agreed to do just that for 6 months. Does this mean only for what comes via the EU, or from everywhere?

My understanding is that under WTO rules, it's all or none, which is why the EU are saying they will require paperwork etc.

As far as I know, they could have agreed as part of the deal to wave stuff through for a specific period of time. However, that wasn't part of the deal so if the UK wave through stuff from the EU, they have to wave everything though.

However, the UK have already demonstrated that international law doesn't really apply to them (c.f. IMB, disregard for nationality recognition under the GFA) so they will presumably just breach the WTO rules if they don't suit.

Mistigri · 26/12/2020 12:56

I imagine that EU exporters are somewhat more prepared than U.K. exporters, but hauliers? Depends largely on the size of the firm IMO.

mrslaughan · 26/12/2020 13:10

I haven't read the article - but the headline fills me with rage.......

Mistigri · 26/12/2020 13:12

Oh, Sarah Vile: I wouldn't give her as much as 1 second's worth of consideration.

SabrinaThwaite · 26/12/2020 13:19

Who was it that coined the nickname “pound shop Lady Macbeth” for Sarah Vain?

Peregrina · 26/12/2020 13:25

Sarah Vine - agreed. Not worth wasting your rage on.

DGRossetti · 26/12/2020 13:42

If Brexiteers think for one moment that they're off the hook, there are probably a few nasty surprises in stock.

Now they can own their own shit deal as well as ripping rights from their fellow citizens.

And this needs to be forever - and I mean forever remembered as Tory Brexit.
