What do we think at this late stage in the proceedings? I know which horse I'm backing, and it's called 'Stick it up your Sovereignty'. Unfortunately I feel he'll be bringing No Deal home, but I hope I'm wrong.

Lorries queuing for days means no fresh food in the shops. It also means, as has been said elsewhere, many EU hauliers will just avoid the UK as delay cuts into profit. We are absolutely screwed

ListeningQuietly · 10/12/2020 16:34

Bluntness
If you are right then why are Dover Harbour Board and the Customs Clearance agents both saying that the systems are NOT ready.

Processing of C88 and T2 has not been done at the Channel ports for over 30 years

there have been no trial runs

deferment accounts have not been set up

demurrage areas have not been set up

the UK govt will be breaching the WTO rules if it waves some vehicles through without checks

and if they do, it will be a smugglers paradise
(the opposite of "taking back control")

We've already got Southampton, Felixstowe and Tilbury grinding to a halt because of empties

if there is "no deal" then drivers cannot operate on both sides of the channel

and those trade points are NOT in the WA
they were left to be sorted during TRansition

Bluntness100 · 10/12/2020 16:37

Can you link to that, because I’ve just looked at Dover’s website ans can see no such thing. Also which customs clearance agents are saying this? There are thousands of them.

And I said without doing in-depth checks, jot no checks.

Not in Dover there aren't any more

I’m sorry I don’t understand listening

I clearly stated there is a deal. It is the withdrawal agreement. That I estimated trucks to be delayed of up to a week at the border. That what was being negotiated now was effectively an enhancement. But the base deal was in place and companies prepared.

Nothing in your links disputes what I said. The point over the software going live on 23rd December, what is your point, you think delays will be longer than a week? The haulier guy gives some vague projections.

Remember that any haulier that started their journey before rhe 1 JAN does not need the new paperwork. It is only those who depart on the first or after. As the first is New Year’s Day and a holiday, it’s also a weekend, most companies are looking to stop vehicles crossing the border at go live. As such, most trucks will start again on the fourth. So there is more time than folks think

As said, I’m not sure what you’re point is. I can categorically assure you that the withdrawal agreement is rhe base agreement we will leave with, what’s being negotiated now is an enhancement, and covers different elements inc trade and both the Eu and rhe uk have their systems in place.

Is it because I said systems you thought I meant electronic and that doesn’t go live till the last week in dec? Because my systems I meant things like import requirements, the system, or process, to bring goods in,

NOTHING in this link
ec.europa.eu/info/sites/info/files/slides_the_wa_explained.pdf
specifies the tariff basis which will operate from 1/1/21
NOTHING confirms the future trading agreement

and there are not enough Customs Officers and Clearance Agents in East Kent to keep the vehicles moving

its not the journey IN to the UK that will bugger things up in the next week
its the one back out again

if you really think its all been decided, please tell the Government
as they do not think it has

Peregrina · 10/12/2020 19:28

So software goes live on 23rd December. The day after firms shut down for Christmas, and even those which re-open on 28th (which is a Bank holiday) or 29th will tend to have a skeleton staff in operation. So in practice we have 23, 29, 30th and 31st to trial new software.

How much experience have you of software development Bluntness? That's what I was doing before I retired. The last thing we would do is introduce new software immediately before a holiday.

jasjas1973 · 10/12/2020 20:41

@Bluntness100

IF the movement of vehicles is signed and sealed, then how come the EU today have put forward proposals (in the event of a no deal) to keep Planes & Lorries moving? (plus a extra year of fishing transition)

MarshmallowManiac · 14/12/2020 16:05

IMO nothing is signed & sealed, can't see any way that a deal is going to be likely at all, my heart says deal but I'm afraid my head says NO Deal. Sad

Somebody has swallowed the government's line that the WA is the trade deal. When it's blatantly not.

Weird how somebody can be an employment expert on that board AND a logistics expert on this one, as it would be unusual to have enough knowledge in BOTH to be so sure of all of the intricacies. 🤔🤔

Anyway, I think I'm erring towards no deal again. I might even get to use the - Groupon bulk deal - loo roll we've had for what feels like forever!

MarshmallowManiac · 15/12/2020 14:17

Yes we're surrounded by experts aren't we, funny that. Grin Grin
