Not sure if this is posted in the right board so if not, I'm happy for it to be moved. This is a genuine question I have, I'm not looking to start a war. I'm European and have lived and worked in the UK for over 20 years, now a British citizen. I've seen a lot of articles/news about trade talks between the UK and Australia/Canada. Said trade could also mean freedom of movement between these countries from what I've read. I was under the impression that the whole point(mainly) of Brexit was to stop immigrants from being able to enter the country so easily. Am I missing something? Surely freedom of movement with another country/countries will mean that the issue will just carry on? Or was the problem actually the fact that it was Europeans coming in but Australians and Canadians are ok? I genuinely can't get my head around it so looking for other people's opinions or facts.

Any arrangements would be reciprocal though - and the obvious attraction for British citizens wanting to live and work in Australia, New Zealand, Canada (and the United States) is the English language - we are not a nation well known for our language skills to say the least.

This bar chart (2017/18) shows the United States to be the most popular destination for outgoing UK students - Australia is in second place, France third, Ireland fourth and Canada fifth (New Zealand is 13th);

Maybe instead of dumbing ourselves down by going to work only in English speaking countries, we should place more emphasis on learning languages in the UK. English isn't going to be "the most important language" for much longer.

I don't disagree, but English still looks popular in this chart;

Some of these countries’ treatment of migrants is beyond deplorable, their refusal to accept refugees (not economic migrants but refugees) has led to sanctions by the EU.

The UK's policies are not exactly something to be proud of. In addition, we happily deport our own citizens- I am referring to the Windrush deportees.
