Westminstenders: The Tunnel or Bridge

RedToothBrush · 06/10/2020 15:18

Apparently negotiations are in the black hole of the EU tunnel or should that be on the back of the fantasy of the Boris Bridge?

Another week closer to complete meltdown.

I'm guessing that our world beating customs solution will be based on blackboard and chalk.

Treaty-breaking: International legal body expresses deep concern at actions of UK government

https://yorkshirebylines.co.uk/international-legal-body-expresses-deep-concern-at-actions-of-uk-government/

The International Bar Association (IBA) is a worldwide body, founded in 1947.
It is the global voice of the legal profession.
Bar Associations of lawyers from across the world are members.

The IBA investigates national issues of distortion and miscarriage of justice.

Respect for the law is a world concern.

It was logical therefore that the IBA had a webinar on the British government’s proposals to break international law.

The proposals have massive international implications,
particularly coming from a country previously regarded as a bastion of the law,
which has entered literally thousands of treaties and agreements with countries across the globe.

This excited me Smile < jumps up & down > so I wanted to share the joy of new knowledge

but it's only geeky science stuff, so stroll on by if that's not your joy-bringer ...

Scientists discover 'fastest possible speed of sound'
Until now, it was not known whether there was an upper speed limit, either through solids or liquids.

https://news.sky.com/story/scientists-discover-fastest-possible-speed-of-sound-12100331

Scientists say they have discovered the fastest possible speed of sound.
Researchers found soundwaves travelled at 36km per second in solid atomic hydrogen.
....
Soundwaves go at different speeds, depending on what they are travelling through.

They pass through solids more quickly than through liquids or gas

  • which is why a train can be heard sooner through the tracks than through the air.
... "We believe the findings of this study could have further scientific applications by helping us to find and understand limits of different properties such as viscosity and thermal conductivity relevant for high-temperature superconductivity, quark-gluon plasma and even black hole physics."

...and listening to the ramblings of Donald Trump

Clavinova · 09/10/2020 21:39

It was logical therefore that the IBA had a webinar on the British government’s proposals to break international law.

The International Bar Association (IBA) is a worldwide body, founded in 1947. It is the global voice of the legal profession. Bar Associations of lawyers from across the world are members.

As predicted.

Clavinova · 09/10/2020 21:50

"The webinar, on Wednesday, raised several major issues." ...

I think it's disingenuous of Yorkshire Bylines not to name the speakers on the webinar.

prettybird · 09/10/2020 21:59

That article on the IBA Webinar was interesting BigChoc Smile

I'm sure that they'd have included ethical lawyers who were prepared to argue the case for breaking international law if they could have found any Hmm who would want to risk being disbarred Wink

SabrinaThwaite · 09/10/2020 22:09

Oooh, 🐿

Lord Michael Howard

I thought he was Eurosceptic In Chief?

Clavinova · 09/10/2020 22:18

Oooh
Lord Michael Howard

I could have omitted his name (he wasn't one of the 'confirmed speakers') - but I didn't for the sake of transparency - unlike Yorkshire Bylines.

SabrinaThwaite · 09/10/2020 22:22

So what’s your problem?

Because you certainly like to point out the flavour of participants that you personally don’t like?

Why has Helena Kennedy boiled your puss enough to slip in a link?

pollyannaperspective · 09/10/2020 22:23

He is both for Brexit but spoke out against the international treaty breaking elements of Johnson's IMB.
"None the less, when Brexiteers of such impeccable credentials as Michael Howard and Norman Lamont are tearing into you over international law, you have just a bit of problem."
Quote from Conservative Home website, Sept 11 2020

SabrinaThwaite · 09/10/2020 22:23

*boiled your piss

pointythings · 09/10/2020 22:27

Yorkshire Bylines not listing IBA speakers = awful, dreadful, intolerable behaviour.

The UK breaking international law = fiiiiiiine!

You couldn't make it up.

Clavinova · 09/10/2020 22:28

Helena Kennedy

Clearly not a Brexit fan;

2018 - Helena Kennedy: ‘Brexit is a disaster for women’ -

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2018/oct/09/helena-kennedy-brexit-is-a-disaster-for-women

SabrinaThwaite · 09/10/2020 22:33

Ah, so that’s why Helena Kennedy gets special Treatment.

So come on then, what about Michael Howard? What’s his excuse? Surely you can’t claim he wasn’t Brexitty enough?

Clavinova · 09/10/2020 22:36

So what’s your problem?

"International legal body expresses deep concern at actions of UK government" - suggests the lawyers in the webinar are international lawyers looking in - not UK lawyers - including several prominent remainers.

SabrinaThwaite · 09/10/2020 22:41

So that’s your problem - several prominent remainers.

SabrinaThwaite · 09/10/2020 22:47

And by the way: This webinar is an urgent meeting called at short notice to enable the Bars of England and Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland to discuss the serious challenges to the rule of law raised by the Internal Market Bill.

So not sure why you feel the need to denigrate it for not having international participants, since that was clearly not the target audience?

Clavinova · 09/10/2020 22:48

From my link;
"The IBA previously held a webinar on the domestic and international legal implications of the Internal Market Bill which can be viewed here."

One more lawyer listed; Philippe Sands QC London - who tweeted;

"9 Oct 2019 Brexit is a necessary crisis–it reveals Britain’s true (delusional) place in the world - DEHEdgerton" - very impartial.

TheElementsOfMedical · 09/10/2020 22:51

🐿 “The collective noun for Rattlesnakes is a Rhumba. Therefore, prominent Remainers shouldn’t be allowed to speak the truth, if it casts unfavourable light upon ToryBrexitannianNationalPlague!” 🐿

Clavinova · 09/10/2020 22:52

So not sure why you feel the need to denigrate it for not having international participants

That's quite clearly the suggestion from the headline and the text in Yorkshire Bylines;

yorkshirebylines.co.uk/international-legal-body-expresses-deep-concern-at-actions-of-uk-government/

BigChocFrenzy · 09/10/2020 22:53

Yorkshire Bylines not listing IBA speakers = sloppy journalism,

because Howard - and others in the HoL - illustrate it's not just former Remainers who are shocked at a UK govt breaking international law

SabrinaThwaite · 09/10/2020 22:53

Yup, there’s your problem.

Lawyers who think Brexit is a shit show and are happy to point it out.

Just because you disagree it doesn’t make them wrong.

Clavinova · 09/10/2020 22:54

SabrinaThwaite

I think Elements is giving you a signal that you're digging a bigger hole.

SabrinaThwaite · 09/10/2020 22:56

No, it’s a gentle hint to remind me that you never read Element’s posts.
