After the 2016 referendum, there was lots of discussion about the splits the result exposed; young vs old, economic affluence vs deprivation, educated vs less so, and between Scotland, N.Ireland and Wales, England.
It is a tragedy and a disgrace that the May Government then took an extreme position on Brexit to appease extremists in the Conservative party. A different Government might have used the result as a wake up call to try and find a more moderate way to respect the result and to address the huge inequalities that lay beneath it.
Johnson's Government, following on from their Leave campaign, has since worsened divisions to a level I never thought I would see here.
Looking back, it's hard to reconcile the feeling of summer 2012 with the UK now. We are not the same country.
I don't know what will happen. I want to believe that the penny will drop that Brexit, after the transition ends, has not and will never deliver any of the things that were promised or solve the issues people are angry about. No-one will gain unless you are one of the tiny % of venture capitalists Tory party donors who stand to make a shed load from no deal or one of the beneficiaries of this corrupt Government's cronyism
I fear though that what we have seen so far will get worse because plenty of people do not see what is really happening and are easily manipulated. How could anyone, let alone a majority, vote for Desmond Swayne, Bill Cash, Boris Johnson or Priti Patel? this list could go on for pages so I will stop That these people, up on their hind legs in the Commons yesterday are elected in a democracy reflects the state we are in.
Although my usual optimism is waning, good people have to keep trying. This thread is a beacon of hope that we are not alone. Thank you Red and all of you.
