Westministenders: The Virus

Its like living in a Bad Disaster B Movie.

If you thought Brexit on your TV every day was Bad, The Virus is a whole new level.

The 5pm broadcast with Johnson and friends, and the public infomation video with the unblicking Chris Witty (who has such unfortunate mannerism he makes me think he's me a Dr Who alien akin to the Slitheen).

Who knows what will happen. Just that everything has changed and our entire economy is now on life support whilst we figure out how to deal with the crisis and what on earth our exit strategy is.

Johnson has however refused to join a joint EU purchase scheme designed to assist countries through the crisis.

Meanwhile the US is about to go nuts... so what does that do to a trade deal?

More money for the NHS? More hospitals?

Well its possible that might just happen...

mrslaughan - I have to get the wholemeal rye flour from either Tesco or Sainsbury's as one of them doesn't stock it Confused (can't remember which way round Blush). Fortunately, I only use a small amount when feeding the starter (mostly use plain/white bread flour) and I got a new 1.5kg bag not long ago (part of my No-Deal Brexit preparations Wink)

I love sourdough bread. I have to be careful to hide the yeast starter before it gets its own name and pet status by the kids.

The last time I used it, my youngest was inconsolable and told the neighbors I had cut "Reggie" in half.

prettybird · 30/03/2020 17:22

My initial yeast for my starter was from an apple grown in the garden, honest Grin

Never mind my veggies I'm going to have to bleach my mind soon!!

The world is safe, don't worry Smile.

However, it's fascinating the research going into the biome at the moment. Did you know it ages with the host ? And there's a body of evidence that the actual process of vaginal childbirth is essential for coating an infant in their own "starter biome" that caesarean births miss ? Which is being implicated in the rise in allergies in the Western world ?

Is there a prize for most OT posting ? Do I come anywhere close ?

Here we go: Raab C Nitwit showing us all the competence and charisma we can look forward to if BJ keels over.

Fair point Grin. In the absence of any Brexit news, I guess baking tips are a fair replacement thread service. As long as they miss out a few stops.

Have you seen the video of the little girl wailing because Nando’s (and about a billion other fast food places) is closed? Why do people share this crap?

First, I couldn’t believe the parent shared it - I wouldn’t put video footage of my kid in the public domain, especially not being a whiny brat. Second, I suspect that won’t age well as the death toll rises & hunger becomes more acute for vulnerable groups. But then I’m a mardy Luddite who hates stuff like Facebook and jolly memes.

mrslaughan · 30/03/2020 18:17

DG - do you know that there is huge research going into the lungs biome - apparently have been drawn with lung health and asthma - and a diverse lung biome..... which is fascinating how little we know about the body....

JeSuisPoulet · 30/03/2020 18:39

Hello all! I had to drop by and see what you are all up to and hope I can have a decent chat, rather than all of the "let's post the positive stories of COVID 19!" and "OMG, the bin men just told me to WASH MY HANDS after TOUCHING MY BIN! Shock " It's facepalm metropolis out there atm. Still, it's thrown up the gem of Cummings running away from No10 like a goblin seeking shelter Wink I could watch that for hours.

JeSuisPoulet · 30/03/2020 18:44

Actually it may not be long until the facepalm emoji becomes un-PC. It might be the superspreader of the emoji world...but so necessary in today's world!

Just reading back through posts - I've missed you guys!

Grin I admit I'd thought of a vampire that realised his alarm clock hadn't gone off before daybreak ... and was scuttling to his coffin before he imploded

Definitely the scuttle of someone who suddenly isn't convinced about herd immunity... Wink

TheMShip · 30/03/2020 19:41

For the stats lovers here: rocs.hu-berlin.de/corona/docs/forecast/results_by_country/

JeSuisPoulet · 30/03/2020 19:50

Thanks MShip. No idea what that person in the Guardian this morning was talking about when they said the figures look like they are decreasing. Can I ask if you lot have had a discussion about the cases where people are dying at home (there was a mum in her 30's in London a few days ago) who don't count as COVID because they hadn't been tested in a hospital prior to death? I am unsure as to whether they are counted later after autopsy and added to later figures or if this is just now "accepted" - seems pretty shit for records as far as I can see either way tbh.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/03/2020 19:53

I'm loving it, mship, thanks
I switched it to linear

BigChocFrenzy · 30/03/2020 19:56

Poulet I've read several reports that UK deaths are only counted if they occur after hospital testing,
but not at home or in a care home

Also, the daily statement of testing & deaths strongly implies this

AuldAlliance · 30/03/2020 20:09

Over 3000 deaths in France. And that's before they begin including deaths in care homes...
21000 CV patients in hospital, over 5000 in ICU.
Today saw the biggest rise in the number of cases since the start of the outbreak.

Not sure how reliable the data is: I know three people who have been diagnosed positive by online GPs, but not tested.
(That's two more than the number of Brexiteers I know, and three more than the number of Brexiteers I am friendly with, Mistigri Wink)

I'm waiting for the stats bods to comment on TheMShip's graphs. The one for Reunion made me Hmm as I can't see why they forecast a fall in cases so soon.

RedToothBrush · 30/03/2020 20:10

Have you seen the video of the little girl wailing because Nando’s (and about a billion other fast food places) is closed? Why do people share this crap?

No.

Thank god.

This country really is doomed.

Oh don't get me startedon the fucking rainbow in the window trend.

Why couldn't it be something which involved half a brain cell and something to actually crack a smile like I don't know 'Knock Knock Jokes'.

Person 1: Knock Knock
Person 2: Who's there?
Person 1: Sound of running feet
Person 2: Opens door to see delivery driver legging it

Damn it even knock knock jokes have been ruined by covid-19.

Red just before the rainbow idea came over and began to be popular I did try to do something a bit more exciting. I suggested putting paintings into windows (of anything and as many/few as you like) and leaving books out for a book swap. The idea was that you do your daily walk and the kid writes down the pictures he sees (eg dragon, dog wearing a hat etc) and then can go home and make a story up about what they have seen. So as you go on the more aspects to the story can be added with more pictures/further you walk and you can also help families who may not have extra books by doing a community book swap. It was sadly drowned out by rainbows Sad
