Westministenders: The Virus

Its like living in a Bad Disaster B Movie.

If you thought Brexit on your TV every day was Bad, The Virus is a whole new level.

The 5pm broadcast with Johnson and friends, and the public infomation video with the unblicking Chris Witty (who has such unfortunate mannerism he makes me think he's me a Dr Who alien akin to the Slitheen).

Who knows what will happen. Just that everything has changed and our entire economy is now on life support whilst we figure out how to deal with the crisis and what on earth our exit strategy is.

Johnson has however refused to join a joint EU purchase scheme designed to assist countries through the crisis.

Meanwhile the US is about to go nuts... so what does that do to a trade deal?

More money for the NHS? More hospitals?

Well its possible that might just happen...

Andrew Bailey - The new Gov of Bank of England is reportedly under pressure to do similarly and stop UK banks paying out dividends

https://www.ft.com/content/b5736d97-02c0-4e1f-84c3-a2d192bcc519

The European Central Bank has ordered eurozone banks to freeze dividend payments and share buybacks this year
in an escalation of its efforts to avoid coronavirus triggering a credit crunch in Europe.
....
The ECB said banks
“should not pay dividends for the financial years 2019 and 2020 until at least 1 October 2020”.
It added that they should “refrain from share buybacks aimed at remunerating shareholders”.

The freeze on distributing capital to investors was to
“boost banks’ capacity to absorb losses and support lending to households, small businesses and corporates during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic,”
the ECB said.

I may not be mentally strong enough to have another bleaching discussion and as the wrong type of bleach or dosage could injure people I'm not to give out instructions.
The last place people want to end up is hospital.
I was more highlighting one person's normal is another person's scaremongering insanity.

midwesteaster · 30/03/2020 15:47

The first time I saw bleaching instructions for fruit and veg on the side of a bleach bottle I thought my Spanish was even worse than I thought because that couldn't be what was meant meant thinking back.
A few years later it was just normal food preparation akin to putting meat in the fridge.

Are you Donald Trump ?

Lol

Melassa · 30/03/2020 16:19

In Italy some people wash bleach fruit in Amuchina

My aunt was one such person. I will admit I always thought it a bit on the excessive side, but sales of this have recently gone through the roof.

midwesteaster · 30/03/2020 16:21

DG, harsh.
Obviously I'm not the Don because he is perfectly happy if people drink fish tank cleaner and die!
It is interesting how ingrained different standards can become though.
I remember noticing this during the Sochi Olympic Games with the outcry at having to put used toilet paper in bins.
We caused havoc with our plumbing system until we realized that it really was essential to do this.
Nowadays I could happily flex either way. Again useful if toilet paper runs out.

midwesteaster · 30/03/2020 16:23

Oh I see!
I'm not going to give out instructions.

But equally, I'm sure I'm not too 😃

I think cabin fever is setting in ...

After feeling very hungry yesterday as DH is eating us out of house and home, and DH and I deciding to ration the pasta and rice we have since we've not seen any locally yet, I raided the cupboards and made Orange Gin Jelly.

It is my second (third in my case) week moment of lunacy.

Hmmm

having just discovered how easy it is to make sourdough, I'm tempted to experiment for our next pizza.

Barrique · 30/03/2020 16:59

My sourdough starter is still at the smelling like gym socks stage.

p.s. that loaf looks quite like the ones DF would return with from the deli he used to visit (Greek-Cypriot. We went to the wedding of the daughter with all the money pinned on the dress Smile). Slightly dry and most excellent for dipping ...

There was another loaf he'd return with - we used to call it "caterpillar bread" but I think it was really a Greek/Turkish Koulouri "finger bread". Absolutely divine (covered in seeds) and absolutely unknown to 1970s English people - certainly that we knew.

mrslaughan · 30/03/2020 17:05

I decided I was going to make sourdough- I have in the past used a rye flour starter...... I can't find rye flour anywhere - so decided I am going to keep on supporting our amazing local bakery by buying there sourdough (which they sell through our local farmshop)

prettybird · 30/03/2020 17:06

DGR - that would certainly be another way to use up the starter rather than discard when you feed it. Apparently you can also make sourdough pikelets (free form "pancakes"/drop scones) or crumpets (if you have ring in which yo shape them). Not tried that yet though.

You do realise that just because it's the internet, you don't have to share everything ?
