It turns out that taking the hard shoulder off motorways makes them two hundred times more dangerous.[] Who knew?

Yet another example where many many peoples warnings were disregarded and where I guarantee that when this is discussed, the surprise will be palpable.

ListeningQuietly · 27/01/2020 18:14

Re Huawei .....
Their security is shocking and they are known to transfer data into PRC for testing purposes
but they are much much cheaper than the alternatives
and incredibly reliable

the EU and the US could have challenged them if they had supported blue sky research
but Blackrock et al would have made less money then .....

Mockers2020Vision · 27/01/2020 18:24

What's odd is there are only three manufacturers: Ericsson in Sweden, Nokia in Finland, and Huawei. (Samsung are thinking it over.)

The Scandis have overfull order books and charge Scandi prices. Huawei is basically industrial espionage knockoff that's cheaper because they work for buttons and have no R&D budget when you nick everything.

AuldAlliance · 27/01/2020 18:27

I am in France (I've been told I have to preface all posts thus).

I switched over to fibre-optic internet recently as they've rolled (?) it out all over my town. So I had to get a new router.
Guess who it's made by?

lonelyplanetmum · 27/01/2020 18:43

Not quite sure when the best time to pitch in my 99p would be.

I downloaded the correct version today. Quite uplifting I have to say.

ContinuityError · 27/01/2020 18:45

Can we do a swap with the US - Prince Andrew for Anne Sacoolas?

AuldAlliance · 27/01/2020 18:47

Bung in a free Farage, too and it's probably a done deal. Trump seemed to like him...

MysteryTripAgain · 27/01/2020 18:53

I am in France (I've been told I have to preface all posts thus)

Hahaha.

Seem to remember the person who issued that instruction also thought AuldAlliance was an alias.

bellinisurge · 27/01/2020 18:58

Guessing that is referring to me. Although quite how I am issuing instructions, I have no idea.

Lisette1940 · 27/01/2020 19:01

Yes, enjoying the Ode to Joy right now.

yolofish · 27/01/2020 19:05

god I am so thick, I've only just realised that Ode to Joy is the EU theme tune. Will download immediately!

DGRossetti · 27/01/2020 19:09

Ode to Joy is the EU theme tune.

For some reason, it was the first piece I multitracked in the 90s, when I got my Fostex Grin

AuldAlliance · 27/01/2020 19:12

DS2 is learning Ode to Joy in school just now. I don't know whether it is coincidental or not. I've been struggling to see how it fits in with their current project on reducing waste. Although, maybe his teacher is all about the v subtle messages.

(I am in France)

ListeningQuietly · 27/01/2020 19:19

Probably the best of these
at the moment I cannot decide if it makes me happy or sad

Lisette1940 · 27/01/2020 19:28

It's also 250 years since Beethoven's birth

Frankiestein402 · 27/01/2020 19:38

Huawei is basically industrial espionage knockoff that's cheaper because they work for buttons and have no R&D budget when you nick everything.

Have you got any source for that or is it just an anti-Chinese rant? Technically the Huawei kit is superior to anything Nokia/Ericsson have in production - whilst they might conceivably have got a start via industrial espionage I'm not aware that anyone has charged them with this. I'd be very surprised because both Nokia and Ericsson are hot at chasing patent infringements. Basically hauwei overtook these guys because they were sitting on their market duopoly.

The sole reason the US are anti-huawei is trump's trade war with china and they are trying very hard to get the UK to buy in

The security arguments are complete bollocks - Huawei are unique in that they provide their source code to a GCHQ managed facility in Reading that has been reviewing this stuff for many years. (and hauwei have improved security based on feedback from the team)

Nokia/Ericsson don't do this of course so we have no idea how robust their code is or whether NSA backdoors are present.

Mistigri · 27/01/2020 19:40

Thanks Frankie. Good to have another perspective. 5G is well outside my zone of expertise.

Frankiestein402 · 27/01/2020 19:47

Listening Quietly - that's my favourite too

  • the one at Westminster is interesting in that only a single Bobby was visible - for a 'mob' gathering outside Parliament!

(for much of the people's vote campaign I'd slipped 'ode to joy' into dd's sax practice - with windows wide open - it cheered me up and hopefully annoyed passing brexiteers)

GeistohneGrenzen · 27/01/2020 19:54

ListeningQuietly I prefer that flashmob of Ode to Joy too. Spent an inordinate amount of time last night exploring others on YouTube - the one from Leipzig hbh was interesting but maybe best to start half way through; gave German and English subtitles on screen. Also found this:
www.andrerieutranslations.com/Lyrics/Ode-to-Joy.html
which gives translation of European Anthem after the text/trans of Schiller's poem. And curious happenings when you move your cursor Grin. Well it did mine, anyway!

Frankiestein402 · 27/01/2020 20:05

To be fair to Listening - reporting of this:

www.gov.uk/government/publications/huawei-cyber-security-evaluation-centre-oversight-board-annual-report-2019

could be the source - however this references long term with the intent being to get it fixed before it becomes an issue.

(as I said no equivalent analysis of the competing kit is available - eg one might think that this outage reflects badly on Ericsson software release processes - certificate management is kinda basic:
www.theverge.com/2018/12/7/18130323/ericsson-software-certificate-o2-softbank-uk-japan-smartphone-4g-network-outage
)

Barnier refutes Johnson's claims over Irish Sea trade checks

No surprise
Barnier actually read the agreement - in fact the EU drafting team wrote it on his instructions
BJ doesn't do detail, as May reportedly complained when he was in her Cabinet

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jan/27/customs-checks-needed-on-irish-sea-trade-after-brexit-eu

Days after the prime minister said there would “emphatically” be no checks on trade across the Irish Sea,
the EU’s chief negotiator told an audience in Belfast that
the UK had agreed to them as part of a “creative and flexible” solution to the Irish border question.

There was no provision for ignoring them in the legal test of the withdrawal agreement,
Barnier said in a speech at Queen’s University.

“In agreeing the [Northern Ireland] protocol, the UK has agreed to a system of reinforced checks and controls for goods entering Northern Irelandd^ from Great Britain.”

“The text is very precise. I always tell the truth,”
Barnier said in response to questions from the media on whether checks could be lifted.
When asked how he felt about Johnson’s repeated claims there would be no checks, he replied:
“I know what is written in this text.”

< is he hinting our PM is telling porkies ? What a surprise >

borntobequiet · 27/01/2020 20:57

I love the way “creative and flexible” has been turned back on our Govt. Haven’t they been demanding this of the EU for, like, forever?

ListeningQuietly · 27/01/2020 21:47

Frankie
My views of Huawei are based on multiple, multiple sources.
And yes the Scandinavian companies are not as closely watched
but their governments are less of a strategic threat to the EU than the PRC.
Understanding the issue involves analysis of detail.
Something not on the radar of our dear leader.

Frankiestein402 · 27/01/2020 22:31

but their governments are less of a strategic threat to the EU than the PRC.

If the software has weaknesses its not just 'owning' governments that can exploit it - actually more likely to other states or non-state actors.

The argument for using multiple sources is to reduce the risk of all your infrastructure being taken out/exploited by a single hole.

At the moment I'm happier to put more credence in GCHQ saying its a manageable risk than your unreferenced sources - this is a year old but its an excellent exposition of the issue and mitigation aoproach:

Mistigri · 28/01/2020 07:21

If Johnson listens to the experts on 5G he might actually go up a notch in my estimation.
