Speaker Bercow is gone.

Speculation that Johnson is parachuting into Rutland.

Rumours that the Brexit Party won't contest the election.

A new speaker to be elected on Monday.

Parliament to dissolve next week.

Brexit? Oh we've forgotten that until Friday 13th...

Dusty is quite correct - he's been very vocal in his support for the WA.

I wonder if the comments were made in connection with May's deal, particularly wrt the backstop.

MockersthefeMANist · 02/11/2019 19:09

Gun ownership per head in Canada is not far behind the USA

Not exactly.

The number of gun-owners is about the same proportionately, but they will almost certainly own just one gun, nad it will almost certainly be a single-shot rifle. Which is far from the case south of 49.

Basilpots · 02/11/2019 19:13

Dusty just going off Remainiacs podcast in fairness it was Mays deal he was talking about, but he had said any deal under Art 50 would be rubbish.. but he is a Tory and they all seem to be towing the line with Johnson’s deal.

Basilpots · 02/11/2019 19:14

Doesn’t Switzerland have a high proportion of gun ownership without the same issues as US ?

Basilpots · 02/11/2019 19:25

www.cnn.com/2019/11/01/tech/facebook-false-ads-uk/index.html

The company will not fact-check ads run by British political parties and the thousands of candidates running for election to the House of Commons. Ads from other political groups, like the pro-Brexit group Leave.EU, will be subjected to fact-checking, the company confirmed.

Which makes no sense Confused

Daniel Hannan's view of the BJ WA:
(a tweet on 17/10)

The EU agreement delivers:
- Supremacy of British law
- Independent UK trade policy
- No annual tribute to Brussels
- Control of farming and fishing
- Good relations with our EU neighbours

It's only hardcore, no-dealer Brexiters that are saying BJ's WA 'isn't Brexit' & they've been getting a lot of flack for that from leavers across the political spectrum (unsurprisingly)

From what I've seen across various social media, the majority of leavers are in favour of it as well as moderate remain voters who want the ref result to be honoured.

placemats · 02/11/2019 19:31

Switzerland also takes a referendum seriously. It's never 'once in a generation' when it comes to fairness.

mrslaughan · 02/11/2019 19:33

@ListeningQuietly - I would dispute that islets just healthcare for the elderly - I would just say healthcare. Mental health and SEN services - I don't think woefully underfunded cuts it - as they are almost no -existent.

placemats · 02/11/2019 19:36

The NHS is a coverall for all services free at point of entry, except when it comes to care homes for the elderly which is usually about £4000 per WEEK.

ListeningQuietly · 02/11/2019 19:37

Mrslaughan
You are right that all healthcare is at breaking point
BUT
Elderly care is an area that basically did not exist before 60 years ago ....

placemats · 02/11/2019 19:39

The cost of a prisoner per WEEK is £1200.

ListeningQuietly · 02/11/2019 19:40

BestisWest
Alternatively @MNHQ could very easily go down the route that Ebay had years ago ....
One post per day in the first month
On post per hour in months two to six
10 posts per hour in months seven to 12
and then unlimited posting

which would allow newcomers to ask questions
but not get into fights

mrslaughan · 02/11/2019 19:42

Most homes in Switzerland have a gun, there is compulsory training - its army issued from memory........ it goes along with the compulsory army service. They are issued a rifle and have to go to there local range I think once a year to practise....... that's from memory of a discussion we had with a local Swiss family over a very drunkard lunch at my sisters house (she lives there for 10years)
But I also think there are rules about how it is kept - eg gun safes.

placemats · 02/11/2019 19:43

Sorry, it's £4000 per MONTH for care homes on average.

OublietteBravo · 02/11/2019 19:43

@HateIsNotGood - the transition period currently ends on 31 Dec 2020 irrespective of when it actually starts (presumably 1 Feb 2020 - hence 11 months).

Alsohuman · 02/11/2019 19:44

@placemats, you’re mistaken. Care homes are around £1k a week.

Oakenbeach · 02/11/2019 19:49

Agreed. In fact I don’t even believe NF would
have been satisfied with no-deal..... Any kind of accommodation with the EU after would have been dressed up as betrayal. Even if we nuked Brussels, NF would probably be crying “treason” for failing launch our entire nuclear arsenal
against every population centre in Europe.

Peregrina · 02/11/2019 19:53

Very easy to find sources from google for Johnson and his statement about being dead in a ditch but here's one

ListeningQuietly · 02/11/2019 20:12

A Portillo Moment
I happen to be watching another of his travel programmes at the moment.
and much as he irritated me when he was young
people like him are who we need in the HOC

  • knowledge of the world
  • well read
  • know that life can throw you a curve ball
HateIsNotGood · 02/11/2019 20:19

Many thanks oubliette - so my understanding of the current situation is that, whilst we are agreeing our WAB, with a GE thrown in, and maybe not proceeding with the WAB and doing something else entirely, or not - the 'transition period' is counting down.

The 'transition period' that should be keeping things 'orderly'.

And also many thanks Born2b, I'll be giving that a read.

HoneyandSpice · 02/11/2019 20:34

I live in a rather bizarre constituency. Posh coastal town. Large population of wealthy middle class, middle aged and elderly. I work in Sainsbury's. All I do all day is scan Daily Mail papers with peoples groceries. However, it was a massive Tory seat, until Blair's landslide. And it's been Labour ever since! I'll post screenshots to illustrate.

We have not passed the withdrawal agreement (WA) , the vote for 2nd reading will be voided by the dissolution of parliament for the election because the Bill had not passed through Parliament to Royal assent.

In order for there to be a transition period the new government will have to pass the/a WA again. At the moment, if that doesnt happen by 31/1/20 we are again out with no deal - so I'm not quite sure why there are comments about no deal being off the table.

If they do pass the/a WA then we are in transition, the current unpassed WA has this ending 31/12/20 - that may not necessarily be true of the next WA.
(especially as the current WA needs us to request an extension in mid 2020)
