Speaker Bercow is gone.

Speculation that Johnson is parachuting into Rutland.

Rumours that the Brexit Party won't contest the election.

A new speaker to be elected on Monday.

Parliament to dissolve next week.

Brexit? Oh we've forgotten that until Friday 13th...

Of course if that happens it will all be the fault of the opposition and especially, Jeremy Corbyn.

ArseDarkly · 01/11/2019 18:40

Getting a happy feeling after the great Orange's intervention and BCF info on vote leave referral to CPS.

Isabel Oakshott was insufferably patronising and goading on QT last night, barracking the Labour rep that he was talking bollocks about Trump's interest in the NHS and that nothing had been found from the investigations into vote leave. Up yours!

mrslaughan · 01/11/2019 18:44

I will be cracking the champagne if I am wrong - but my bet is in CPS sitting on their hands.....
Which really fucks be off, but they all back away from holding BoZo et al to account

AthelstaneTheWhoooOOOooo · 01/11/2019 18:44

Misti - I think the opposite of "nationalist" is (or should be wink) internationalist - which, as it happens is what the SNP consider themselves to be, as they want to welcome all nationalities to Scotland, allow all those who live and contribute in Scotland to vote and look outwards to the EU and from there the world

But I get where you're coming from as I'd have voted No in 1979 (was just too young to vote, but still counted as a NO vote confused) for very similar reasons. I am against ethnic nationalism - but the nationalism that the SNP espouses (which it has done for at least the 20 years I've voted for them) is civic nationalism: not blood based, but because you want to be Scottish/live/work in Scotland.

I wouldn't have voted SNP in 2015 (not that I was here then) because I didn't want a smaller, navel-gazing country to live in. I'm more than happy to vote SNP now, because ditto. I would far rather be living in a small Scotland with a chance to join a large EU, than a small Scotland, tied to a tiny, angry, England.

I like consensus, I like compromise, I like being safe from extreme parties passing heartless laws that damage society, environment, individuals. I like being part of a community that is striving to improve.

I do not like being part of a community that thinks people are disposable in the race for greater wealth. So, to add to the metrics, fuck the wanker Boris and his wanking advisers.

TheNumberfaker · 01/11/2019 18:46

I’m also shocked at Parris. I used to get The Times a lot (not wanting to exist in a Leftist/Remain bubble) and I would never have predicted him leaving the Conservative Party.

Basilpots · 01/11/2019 18:48

What did I say about Brexit always ruining somebody in the Basil households special day. Definitely giving the TV debate a swerve. Angry

Hoooo · 01/11/2019 18:50

I sadly agree with you placemats Sad

AthelstaneTheWhoooOOOooo · 01/11/2019 18:50

I’m also shocked at Parris. I used to get The Times a lot (not wanting to exist in a Leftist/Remain bubble) and I would never have predicted him leaving the Conservative Party.

But he's always been fairly europhile, what with his caves in Spain (or Portugal, or something) etc. I can completely understand him being sickened by the current direction. And he's getting old enough to not give a shit anymore.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 01/11/2019 18:51

I wonder how many Leave supporters would vote Brexit rather than Tory-what would make you decide between the two?

I know three Tory voters here who plan to hold their noses and vote Labour: "I don't want to be part of his majority" was what one of them said. I think she was referring to the candidate, not Boris.

Basilpots · 01/11/2019 18:51

I don’t mind Parris. All sorts of nonsense on Twitter about how he was never a ‘true’ Tory. Not even sure what a Tory is anymore if Parris isn’t one ?

mrslaughan · 01/11/2019 18:54

I would say that it's a badge of honour to be called "not a true Tory "

FadingStar · 01/11/2019 18:55

I don't know who to vote for...it will probably be Sinn Fein as the safe seat and remainer party. Would love to vote Alliance but I personally know a revolting, misogynistic man who is involved with them.

Dusty01 · 01/11/2019 19:01

Yes, CPS will sit on their hands. Report will have to come out eventually won’t it?

Alsohuman · 01/11/2019 20:20

I’m delighted with Parris, he’s been moving that way for a while. There will be many moderate Tories who decide to follow his example. My money’s on a very hung parliament.

TheABC · 01/11/2019 20:39

If Boris ends up with a majority, I will personally send @placemats a bottle of gin (if s/he permits me to) and start arranging my exit from the asylum.

However....it's feeling more and more like a Tory schism with moderate voters and former MPs moving towards the Lib Dems.
The funding will be the key.

Tanith · 01/11/2019 21:13

Surrey, previously True Blue Through (I've been reading too many headlines!), is not so certain.

I'm ashamed to say we're responsible for inflicting Gove, Raab and Grayling on a long-suffering electorate Blush. However, 5 seats in Surrey may now be under threat:

Basilpots · 01/11/2019 21:23

Grayling has got to go surely ???

He’s cost us billions???

And yet they keep giving him jobs !!!

Outsomnia · 01/11/2019 21:26

From my perspective , Matthew Parris was one of the good ones.

But there we go. He has made his mind up as to where the windy idiots are going. As are many now also.

OMO obviously.

Alsohuman · 01/11/2019 21:27

By some miracle, Grayling’s got a 20k majority. Donkey and blue rosette territory obviously.

Hoooo · 01/11/2019 21:31

Bridgen lost 11k votes in 2017 I think...

Not enough swing voters to topple him - pretty elderly demographic.

Basilpots · 01/11/2019 21:37

commonslibrary.parliament.uk/local-data/constituency-statistics-population-by-age/

If you want to check your constituency by age demographics try this tool. Handy for students who aren’t sure whether to vote at home or uni ?

Hoooo · 01/11/2019 21:37

Nope.
I'm totally wrong.
He gained 7k!!
Ffs.
Ukip didn't stand here in 2017 so pretty obv where those votes came from...

prettybird · 01/11/2019 21:43

If we're wanting some positivity, assuming that younger voters are statistically more likely to vote against BJ and Faragit, here are some comforting statistics Wink

Ds' registration at his Uni address lis in amongst the numbers of those that registered on the 29th (he's decided to vote up there as Kirsty Blackman came to a Student Parliament event and was brilliant although he really wished his flat was further South so that he was in Ross Thomson's constituency so could contribute to voting him out Wink) (He was already registered down here)

If the theory that Farage will have to stand a lot of BXP candidates to secure access to the national platform is correct, then it will be interesting to see if the plan is just to push the ones that he would have put in if he was limited to 50 or so ... which leads to the possibility that a lot of BXP candidates will simply be there to be names on the ballot with little to no support from the Faragester.

It's not too far fetched to imagining a vague plot like "The Producers" (yes - all implications considered Grin) - only in an election.

Basilpots · 01/11/2019 21:50

Farage is ‘rolling’ out his candidates as of next week.

We are spared Claire Fox she’s not standing.
