Brexit

Will Johnson actually push the button on no deal?

Bearbehind · 08/10/2019 19:31

His plan is clearly to try and ‘scare’ the EU into agreeing to any old deal.

But it’s not working.

He knows no deal will be a disaster.

But which gives first

  • Will the EU blink?
  • Will he extend?
  • Will he go for no deal?

Yes. I think he will do it Sad Angry. And he'll use the will of 52% of the voters to back it up.

Years of mess and negotiations awaits. He's an idiot and won't be affected.

HateIsNotGood · 08/10/2019 21:19

Boris positively relishes the thought that he could go to prison for not writing the Benn Letter. Just for going down in history as the first PM to be sent to jail and for being the Global Headline News, even if, 'just for one day'.

ContinuityError · 08/10/2019 21:20

Yes. I think he will do it. And he'll use the will of 52% of the voters 37% of the electorate to back it up.

Fixed it for you.

HateIsNotGood · 08/10/2019 21:25

obvs meant first UK PM and aware that a raft of UK MPs have previously been imprisoned for a raft of criminalities.

And, isn't there something about only the 'military'/Queen's Guard or whatevs can arrest the PM? Seriously, that looks vairy, vairy appealing to Mr Boris.

Someone... Pienaar's politics? Ran thru these numbers.

Of the 50 most Leave voting seats,
24 are held by Tories.
26 are held by Labour.
Of the 26, 13 are marginals, Tory-Labour.

But Tories could easily lose 13 seats elsewhere due to their hyper pro Brexit stance. There are 13 Scottish Tory MPs, for instance...

Oakenbeach · 08/10/2019 22:00

@RolytheRhino

No Deal = No let-up. No respite. No end!

This “clean break” Brexit is perhaps the biggest lie since the Greeks told Troy they had nice present for them!

The only way to “get Brexit over” is to revoke....

Am I’m someone who’s wanted to leave with a deal.

Antigonads · 08/10/2019 22:01

Can we revoke?

Oakenbeach · 08/10/2019 22:09

Can we revoke?

Yes!

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling last year confirmed that the UK could revoke Article 50 itself, without having to ask the other 27 EU countries for permission.

This could be done by writing a letter to the European Council, made up of EU heads of state.

The ECJ said the UK would then remain a member of the EU on the same terms - as it has now - including keeping its budget rebate.

But it did set some conditions.

The ruling said revocation should be "unequivocal and unconditional", suggesting that the UK could not simply revoke Article 50 in order to buy more time and then resubmit it at a later date.

A senior lawyer at the ECJ said that "appropriate legal instruments" could be used if a member state tried to trigger and revoke Article 50 in order to secure a better withdrawal deal.

Oakenbeach · 08/10/2019 22:10

But in the interests of democracy we need a GE or referendum to provide a mandate for this

Antigonads · 08/10/2019 22:38

So we’d be tied in forever.

Hotel California.

No thanks.

Oakenbeach · 08/10/2019 22:57

So we’d be tied in forever

No, just that revoking and then invoking Article 50 can’t be used as part of negotiating tactics. If we decided in years to come that we wanted to invoke Article 50 again I don’t believe that would be an issue.

Yes we’ll IMO be leaving with no deal on the 31st.

The legislation put into place specified that BJ had to ask for an extension. That’s all. A deal isn’t happening at this point. It takes only one EU member state to say no to an extension, and we go on the 31st.

The legislation was a false reality.

I’m a remain voter, but I do think much of the talk from the remain vote is scaremongering.

No, we won’t have a trade deal, but it’s naive to think that EU countries won’t want to buy fish from us or that they won’t want to sell food to us. Why wouldn’t they?

The EU states which terms should apply, but it doesn’t state that it’s forbidden.

ContinuityError · 09/10/2019 07:02

No, we won’t have a trade deal, but it’s naive to think that EU countries won’t want to buy fish from us or that they won’t want to sell food to us. Why wouldn’t they?

It’s also naive to think that tariffs and non tariff barriers won’t make selling fish to the EU much harder.

WeshMaGueule · 09/10/2019 10:58

37% of the electorate

Or about 25% of the population.

Mistigri · 09/10/2019 11:02

selling fish

Gotta say that when the fishing industry can't find the vets it needs to certify every load on and after Brexit day, I'm going to permit myself a small smile.

CactusAndCacti · 09/10/2019 12:13

I beg to differ. The shenanigans of the Remainers doing everything possible to frustrate and nothing to facilitate has lead people including the EU to think Brexit wouldn’t happen.

Own. Your. Own. Shit.

It is up to the Leavers to come up with a plan. There was never a plan in the first place and there still isn't. The blame for that lies squarely at those that travelled around on the bus.

Antigonads · 09/10/2019 12:33

Shrug.

It’s like a divorce. You can take your ball home and refuse to cooperate to make things as difficult as possible.

I really don’t care.

Quellium · 09/10/2019 12:37

No Deal means we are deeply in the shit. It doesn't solve or stop anything. Clean Break Brexit is a disgusting lie.

We will have no trade deals and will spend decades negotiating. We will be eaten alive by far more powerful trading blocs.

Bye NHS.

Good luck with any sort of Blitz Spirit too.

Still. If I just think positively, I'm sure good old Blighty will come through. Hmm

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/10/2019 18:45

Because it's a democracy, people were asked what they wanted and it's the politicians job to carry out the will of the people, whether or not they personally agree with it.

This isn't how parliamentary democracy works. It's how direct democracy works. And, interestingly most dictatorships. Populist, utilitarian, direct democracy isn't what the UK does. Parliamentary democracy means we elect people who are supposed to understand the issues and work out the best policies for the people they represent.

Not blindly enact whatever fucking stupid bollocks the misinformed idiots want this week, however damaging it would be.

Some countries are populist (Argentina under the Perons) some are more direct democracies (Ireland and Switzerland). The UK wasn't. If we want a direct democracy, we need MUCH better political education and media.

ClumpingKate · 09/10/2019 18:53

What do people mean by can’t stand much more of this? What do you think comes after no deal?

You're right @beardedmum - the answer is years and years and years and years of continued negotiation.

For people who feel they just want it to finish, the only answer is to Revoke Article 50.
