Assuming we remain

Do you think the EU will punish us as an example to other member states.

Or

Throw a huge party with fireworks and Beethoven’s Ninth.

I'm pretty sure we won't remain

MockersthefeMANist · 30/09/2019 15:50

Some will want to love-bomb us.

Others will want to bomb us.

bellinisurge · 30/09/2019 15:54

We aren't going to Remain. With any luck, we will grow the fuck up, accept a rebranded WA and leave in an orderly way.
Although I'm not holding my breath.
The only reason we haven't left yet is because the scummy ERG didn't back their own PM.

fedup21 · 30/09/2019 15:58

I don’t think we’ll be leaving for a long time yet, if at all.

SunnivaGunne · 30/09/2019 16:02

Some will want to love-bomb us. Others will want to bomb us

Grin but I hope not Mockers.

Mistigri · 30/09/2019 16:12

I don't think we will remain.

But if we did, nothing would happen, except that the U.K. would have much less soft power and influence than in the past.

lonelyplanetmum · 30/09/2019 16:12

We aren't going to Remain,sadly.

But after a period of penury and penitence one day a different governing party will emerge. Then we will go cap in hand to seek a new EU membership. I am confident we would not be punished at all- provided that our future statesmen and women manage to show they have bucketloads of intelligence, integrity and grace and are trustworthy.

Of course we would take time to regain our prestigious leading role again and may never do so. Also our exemptions and rebates would not be repeated.

But we'd have to build trust. You know doing things like following proper parliamentary process, not trying to seize control away from Parliament, not lying to the Queen...not groping people. Not giving tax payers money to blondes. That kind of thing.

Greenglassteacup · 30/09/2019 16:15

How would we remain? It’s not going to happen

Mistigri · 30/09/2019 16:17

Remaining isn't impossible, for as long as Brexiters cannot agree a way of actually leaving.

My view is that if a GE results in a Lab minority or coalition govt we will leave on a Norway deal.

If a GE results in something else we'll either crash out or not leave at all. We could still be having this same conversation in 2022 ... wouldn't that be fun?

pikapikachu · 30/09/2019 16:17

We won't remain.
Hopefully it won't be No Deal.

TottieandMarchpane · 30/09/2019 16:23

Why would you assume that?

If we DID remain, I’d worry more about the disgruntled 17 million than the EU. They might be quite grumbly, or even inclined to riot.

fedup21 · 30/09/2019 16:29

We could still be having this same conversation in 2022 ... wouldn't that be fun?

Exactly what I can see happening!

berlinbabylon · 30/09/2019 17:44

We could still be having this same conversation in 2022 ... wouldn't that be fun

I suspect that's the most likely outcome!

berlinbabylon · 30/09/2019 17:47

Well not THE most likely, but certainly feasible.

MarshaBradyo · 30/09/2019 17:47

We won’t remain

But in an imaginary scenario probably neither, maybe a few cold looks in the corridor or a joke if friendly and business as usual

Miljah · 30/09/2019 19:36

tottie the least of my fears is a Leaver riot.

Many, many just really don't care that much. Some will be quietly relieved the grown ups are taking back control.

They won't riot. That would demand a level of commitment they've never demonstrated before.

Parker231 · 30/09/2019 19:43

I’d be incredibly happy if we remain. I don’t imagine there would be any repercussions from the EU but worldwide the UK’s credibility has suffered making such a mess of the Brexit process.

lljkk · 30/09/2019 20:47

I guess the "punishment theory" goes with a theory that EU is already unreasonable & will turn even more unreasonable.

I don't perceive that EU has been unreasonable... if they did turn unreasonable, then UK can just Leave after all. It's not a prison. The WA is standing there wide open any time Parliament wants to take that door.

After that, UK can leave the Backstop any time we like just as long as Parliament agrees to accept paying whatever price there might be (like... you know... violence all over UK again from Irish extremists). That's not a prison the EU made. It's one that English imperialists built foundations for centuries ago.

Johnsonsfiat · 04/10/2019 13:13

We won't remain. But there's always hope: we haven't left yet.

Parker231 · 04/10/2019 13:40

At least as a result of today’s court case we won’t be leaving with a no deal on 31 October.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 04/10/2019 13:43

It’s so interesting - all the time on here leavers accuse remainers of “not accepting we are leaving” but I do not see evidence of that. Remain voters seem to have generally accepted it long ago, as seen on this thread, and are just waiting for the leave camp to agree on something and crack on.

I haven’t seen any evidence of the EU trying to punish the UK. In fact, they have been remarkably restrained in the face of intransigence, bad-mouthing and bad-faith “negotiation” from the UK government. I think the EU feels sorry for the UK population in being so badly served by its government and fears for the UK’s future. Their discussions about how they might help the UK in the face of a no-deal brexit indicates that they do in fact give a shit about the UK population

pikapikachu · 05/10/2019 22:39

I totally agree. The real life Remainers I know also think we are leaving and don't see the EU as bullying at all. It's like when you leave a job, the company that you are leaving will comply by the law and give you a reference etc but their priority will be the company and the employees not leaving so might ask you to work until the end of your notice period despite new company hoping that you'll start there tomorrow.

ClumpingKate · 06/10/2019 00:13

Amazed all these people saying we won't remain!
How, precisely, are we going to leave? No agreement has been ratified / deemed acceptable to leave on, but leaving with no deal at all has also been legally ruled out for this deadline at least, and there's certainly no majority to let it through Parliament.
Unless there's a general election and a major change in parliamentary arithmetic (which I doubt - if anything, I think the Tories and Labour will lose seats to Lib Dems and the Brexit Party leaving us with an even more hung parliament), we're at a stalemate.
The tide is turning, people want it over. My money is on a People's Vote in the spring with a win for remain.

Peregrina · 06/10/2019 08:16

My money is on a People's Vote in the spring with a win for remain.

I am not sure about the win for Remain. The media will whip up anti - EU sentiment. A lot of people who want it over think that a vote for Leave/No Deal will get it over. They wont realise that it will be seven to ten years of negotiations and seeing rights and things like the NHS traded away.

Angryresister · 07/10/2019 07:32

If we remain lot of us will feel huge relief, those of us who live in other EU countries will know that our rights to healthcare will not be removed, thar perhaps Britain will again become a tolerant and open country resting free movement, that eEurope will continue to provide lovely people to care for our citizens .our mental health will improve immeasurably
