Brexit

If there were a GE tomorow

And Jo Swinspn went in to bat with the Lib Dems with only one issue: 'vote lib dem and we'll stop Brexit for good and then call another GE', would you vote for them?

I think that I would, if I believed that they would stick to their word and have a full GE with other things to offer later.

I would vote for whoever was promising to bin Brexit, or second choice, offered a second referendum.

KennDodd · 15/09/2019 13:22

Yes.

Graphista · 15/09/2019 13:22

No way they are tories in disguise, don't stick to their convictions and sacrifice principles for even the illusion of power and for all the criticism of Labour on trans stuff lib dems are way worse!

Wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them! Certainly don't trust JS - just look at her voting record! Very tory like!

prettybird · 15/09/2019 13:27

To give JS her due, she is by all accounts, a very good constituency MP. If the SNP want to unseat her, they will have to put up an excellent candidate (especially as the SNP MP that got in in 2015 was not very good Sad).

prettybird · 15/09/2019 14:04

But my dad, who lives in her constituency, has said he won't vote for her ever again even though she was/is a better constituency MP than the SNP one. Willie Rennie saying that he would never support a second Indyref, even if the pro-independence parties win a majority in Scotland won't have helped the LibDem cause with my dad Hmm

Pennyjane89 · 15/09/2019 14:07

Nope.
Jo Swinson is the most arrogant and deluded woman in politics. Why should her opinion outrank everyone else’s? I voted remain in 2016 but it’s people like her that make me want to leave because of her blatant disregard for the side that won the referendum

MunaZaldrizoti · 15/09/2019 14:10

In last election Libs got 1600 votes in my constituency. My Lab MP won with 35.5k votes with Tories second. No point voting Lib so will vote Lab to ensure a Tory doesn't sneak in

MunaZaldrizoti · 15/09/2019 14:13

Though I am generally against holding a general elections on single issue matters. It sets a inappropriate precedent

Oakenbeach · 15/09/2019 14:14

Probably LDs but far from wholeheartedly... I don’t especially like any of the 3 parties, and the shenanigans of the past couple of months have confirmed I’m a “one-nation Tory” and am politically homeless at the mo. I’d vote for the LDs because i want us to rebuild a positive attitude to Europe as we move forward, and I couldn’t endorse BJ and his unprincipled mendacious crap, and couldn’t be part of enabling a Tory Government led by him.

joystir59 · 15/09/2019 14:21

Tories out! That's my priority. I will vote Labour.

HuntIdeas · 15/09/2019 21:43

Yes, I would vote LD, for 2 reasons:

  1. I couldn’t bear to vote Tory or Labour because of their respective leaders
  1. My initial reaction was not to like the automatic revoke that LD are planning as it’s undemocratic. However, if they get enough votes for an outright majority, then by definition about half the country would have voted for them and therefore for revoking A50 (I know it doesn’t quite work like this because there are more than 2 parties and because of the FPP system)
HuntIdeas · 15/09/2019 21:44

If the labour leader was almost anyone else then they would definitely get my vote

AutumnCrow · 15/09/2019 21:51

The reason I'm so horrified about Brexit affecting my DS so badly (he is nearly 21 and don't get a bloody vote) is because of what the Lib Dems did in coalition with the bloody Tories.

Swinson is perfectly capable of being ruthless in all the wrong ways.

So I'm thinking it through.

Also our Lib Dem candidate is a twat.

Our Labour candidate is ok.

fedup21 · 15/09/2019 22:45

The reason I'm so horrified about Brexit affecting my DS so badly (he is nearly 21 and don't get a bloody vote)

How is that?

prettybird · 15/09/2019 23:09

My dad is going to write to the East Dunbartonshire branch of the SNP to remind them how important it is that they put up a really good candidate and definitely not John Nicolson who was not a good MP when he beat her in 2015 against Jo Swinson.

TheSandman · 15/09/2019 23:15

No. Because I can vote SNP instead

This

Darkbendis · 15/09/2019 23:50

No. I will vote SNP. I don't trust the LibDems not to make a deal with the Scottish Tories. DH, who is a Lib-Dem sympathizer normally, said he would vote SNP this time too.

tobee · 15/09/2019 23:59

I've no fucking clue how I'll vote to be honest. I'll probably research, read Westminsterenders threads and research some more.

My constituency has been Tory a lot, Labour a bit and has been Tory since 2005. And now my Conservative MP was one of the 21 and so an independent. Second place in my constituency has sometimes been Labour, Tory and sometimes LibDem so lots remains to be seen on the tactical front.

Yaralie · 18/09/2019 10:46

The timing of a GE in relation to Brexit makes a difference. It could happen when we are still in the present situation with brexit unresolved, or after we have left the EU with a deal or if we have left without a deal or if Article 50 has been Revoked so we Remain in the EU.

As long as brexit is unresolved it will overshadow the other policies of each party whereas if we have stopped brexit we can concentrate on other important things. Some voters may vote differently depending on the timing.

I intend to vote Liberal Democrat in every case because, not only do I want to stop brexit, but I like the LD's other policies and I think Jo Swinson would be a better PM than either Johnson or Corbyn.

Yaralie · 18/09/2019 11:37

The Liberal Democrats want to build a country where every single person is valued and included.

Where we’ve stopped Brexit, so we can focus on building an economy that works for everyone, on saving our NHS, on giving our children the best start in life, on saving the planet.

Where we’ve turned back the tide on nationalism and populism, and where Britain is once again a collaborative, open and generous nation.

Only a Liberal Democrat government can deliver that vision.

At the next general election, you will choose the kind of country we want to be.

Bloomburger · 18/09/2019 14:52

No. I will never vote LD again.

I think the stance they have taken on Brexit is disgusting and most certainly not democratic.

AutumnCrow · 18/09/2019 16:01

To be fair to Jo Swinson, she is being crystal clear about how and why and on what she is seeking a democratic mandate.

Now that's what I call democracy.

Not a bunch of lies from 2016 onwards from Gove, Johnson and Cummings.

Graphista · 18/09/2019 23:59

"The Liberal Democrats want to build a country where every single person is valued and included." Oh really?

Jo swinsons voting record shows she

Voted AGAINST strengthening the military covenant - so soldiers aren't valued and included

Voted FOR the bedroom tax - so voted for people's housing benefits to be reduced

Voted against increases to benefit payments AT LEAST in line with prices

Voted against higher benefits for the long term sick/disabled

Voted for reduction in benefits

Voted against legal aid being available for social welfare decisions

Voted against making legal aid available for medical negligence cases

so the sick and disabled and otherwise disadvantaged/struggling aren't valued and included

Voted against helping long term unemployed youngsters into work

so young unemployed aren't valued and included

However

Voted for raising income tax threshold

Voted against higher taxes for those on over £150k

Voted against a bankers bonus tax

Voted against the mansion tax

Voted to reduce corporation tax

so already wealthy or at least well off people ARE valued and included

Voted against restricting the Nhs being used to provide private healthcare

so...not really valuing and including those who can't afford private healthcare

Voted for raising the tuition fee cap

Voted to abolish EMA

so not valuing and including students

Yea - really compassionate and inclusive! Not!

Yaralle your post honestly reads like a script for a party political broadcast!

Don't even get me started on lib dems and self ID!

MysteryTripAgain · 19/09/2019 00:06

Jo Swinson has stated that if there was another referendum and the vote was leave she will ignore the result.

How can anyone choose a party whose policy is to ignore majority votes? Contradicts their name of Democrats does it not?

Graphista · 19/09/2019 00:55

@MysteryTripAgain I agree - ANY party that doesn't respect the electorate - even if I disagree with the result of that vote it must be respected

I'm a remainer but would have been fine with a SENSIBLE brexit given the result of the vote (though I do think the ref was very shoddily handled)
