Preparing for Brexit public messages -WTF?

Bearbehind · 10/09/2019 17:52

Have you heard or seen the messages about preparing for Brexit?

They are ridiculous!

The motorway matrix signs say ‘Freight to EU papers may change 1 Nov, please check’

‘May’ change? To what?

The radio adverts say you need to check you passport, you car insurance, your travel insurance

Check where?

The government website is sod all use - it’s more this might, this may, check this.

We have descended into some kind of alternate universe here - if only it were a dream we could all wake up from.

This environment is NOT normal. There is NO precedence for it. It's a government attempt to make preparing for an unbidden chaos look normal.
And of course there is no waking up from it.

MockersthefeMANist · 10/09/2019 18:09

It's beginning to sound like "Protect & Survive"

('How to dig a hole in your garden and bury yourself in the event of a nuclear war, because the govt won't be there to do it for you,' etc....)

Yep - heard the jaunty ad on the radio yesterday and nearly choked on my own spit. Still not clear how it will affect mine and my husband’s business. We work for several EU based companies.

How I wish Kafka was alive.

It's beginning to sound like "Protect & Survive"

Those of us who are old enough to remember this, also remember how it was ridiculed at the time.

BlackeyedGruesome · 10/09/2019 19:17

Yep. Advert in the he local paper. Prepare for Brexit. That's it. Sod all use that is.

CrunchyCarrot · 10/09/2019 19:33

It's pointless being told to 'prepare' when we don't know what for! Hmm Confused

bellinisurge · 10/09/2019 19:38

I looked at it and tried to find anything useful. Apparently I may need to check my passport if I am travelling to Europe, otherwise, it's fiiiiiiine.
I hope it's rightConfused

LadyWithLapdog · 10/09/2019 19:38

Someone got a few million £ designing the website and the “message”. I wonder how that bid went, all above board, no doubt.

CrunchyCarrot · 10/09/2019 19:39

I'm so glad they didn't go with 'Taking Back Control' !

BackInTime · 10/09/2019 19:41

Perhaps if they would release the Yellowhammer report we might have an idea what we need to prepare for Confused

whyamidoingthis · 10/09/2019 19:42

I suspect it's a box ticking exercise. Instruct department X to inform the public about preparations for brexit. Put ad in paper telling people to prepare for brexit. Job done.

I'm in Ireland. We have had ads on the radio for at least 18 months to 2 years. We have been advised about driving in the UK, buying from UK websites etc. We're even telling UK citizens who live here what they need to do if they have a UK driving licence.

There are information campaigns for businesses that trade with UK, that transport through the UK, that use BSI standards etc. There is funding available for businesses to get brexit ready.

It just seems utterly bizarre to me that everyone, other than the UK, has prepared for, and informed businesses and citizens about, the potential impact of brexit.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 10/09/2019 19:43

Please government, pay me millions to devise a campaign telling absolutely no one, absolutely nothing about how to prepare for god only knows what.

I shall charge £10 million per vague nonsensical word. A bargain I tell you!

I was thinking the same about this advice given by the police today. It probably is sensible but at the same time why now?

bellinisurge · 10/09/2019 19:52

@mrsglowglow the grab bag thing is nothing to do with Brexit. September is Preparedness month here and in the US.
Don't conflate the two. I'm a general prepper. Grab bags or ohfucksacks as they are called on MN are a general prepper thing.
They are a good idea for all kinds of reasons not related to Brexit. Ask the people in Whaley Bridge for example. Yes they were allowed to go back briefly to get stuff but would you have wanted to risk it?

jasjas1973 · 10/09/2019 20:16

We voted for this and we don't seem to have changed our minds.

Judging by the Govts advertising campaign, this is some sort of external issue in which we have no say....... and no idea.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/09/2019 21:02

There is no Preparedness month in the UK and I hope we don’t import this madness from the US as well.

bellinisurge · 10/09/2019 21:09

Sorry/not sorry to disabuse you, but there is.

Socksontheradiator · 10/09/2019 21:09

What happened about releasing the yellowhammer document? I'm sure I read that there was a vote on it, and it has to be published.

bellinisurge · 10/09/2019 21:13

Made available to MPs is not the same as making public.

Socksontheradiator · 10/09/2019 21:20

Thanks. I'm getting fatigue trying to keep up.

HeronLanyon · 10/09/2019 21:28

I began bu thinking the international driving licence thing was useful (list of countries and which type you need) but that is all speculative anyway. I found the website hugely underwhelming and pointless.

It’s literally unbelievable we are in this position.

HeronLanyon · 10/09/2019 21:31

If parliament was sitting the yellowhammer docs and prorouging (sp) communications would have been debated and subject of Qs as for Boris at pmq and ministers generally And in committee etc. I don’t know how r where we will find out now.

ImNotYourGranny · 10/09/2019 21:32

We got sent a link to government 'prepare for brexit' website by the embassy. When through the questions and all we got was basically 'ask the authorities in the country you live in as we haven't got a feckin clue'. It's a joke.
