My DH works in south. I'm really worried what will happen now! I feel like we are again being held hostage at the whim of the English!
They really don't care do they? What is going to happen here?

bellinisurge · 28/08/2019 15:35

Can't pretend there are idiots who don't care. FWIW, I care. Seen plenty on here who care too.

Feduppluckingmychinhairs · 28/08/2019 15:43

I am in Cavan. It's a fucking disgrace. Shame on the lot of them. I don't have words anymore for how I feel about it all and for my children.

bellinisurge · 28/08/2019 16:00

I, of course mean I can't pretend there AREN'T idiots.
There are still people working to stop this no Deal nonsense.

postmanwatcher · 28/08/2019 17:11

I'm seriously considering a move to Co. Galway. I can't believe we are in the position we are in now. We haven't had an assembly in NI for 2 years and the secretary's we have been given by Westminster have been apathetic at best and useless at worst. DUP spend all their time thinking they are mates but in fact being used by Conservatives while their own people are suffering. During the campaign for Brexit the border issue was a big talking point in NI yet it feels like it's come as a shock to the English. I just don't understand it. Maybe we would be better off with a united Ireland. As someone who lives through the troubles I never thought I would say that.

Arlene on NI news spouting her crap as usual. I hope to god voters here don't blindly support her and her party as they have in the past.

Nope Remain voting English are not to blame. Please don't tar all English people with the same brush. We are furious/ upset about what we are being dragged into too by Leavers

MadeinBelfast · 28/08/2019 19:03

The whole thing is just an absolute disaster. I feel like the Tories do not give a shit about anything except money (their own, that is). I've emailed my MP but as he's DUP I'm not expecting anything to come of it. I've also signed the petition that's going around although the last petition didn't make much difference even with its millions of signatures. I'm hoping there'll be a demo organised in Derry or Belfast, my kids haven't been to one before but I think it's time for them to get a say in their future.

postmanwatcher · 28/08/2019 19:04

Of course you are correct. I apologise for that. I know that was not the right language to use. I know not all English are the same.
It does however feel like Westminster don't give a shit. And pay us lip service only. To most people here DUP look like pathetic fools pandering to conservatives.

postmanwatcher · 28/08/2019 19:06

MadeinBelfast I too would go to a rally and take everyone I know with me. I haven't met one person yet who isn't terrified about what we are facing.

I’m English and live in NI, my husband is NI, so is my daughter and we have another one on the way. I am very worried, and ashamed of the attitudes of people in England towards this country. My husband is less worried - perhaps an after effect of living in the troubles.

FlaviaAlbia · 28/08/2019 19:08

Yup, worried here too.

It's like we can see everything slipping backwards before our eyes. Once our economy takes a hit the paramilitaries will only get stronger.

I wonder what way an election would go here now?

MadeinBelfast · 28/08/2019 19:25

Unfortunately I think an election would go the same way as always. I like to think our generation and those born after the 'Troubles' are more integrated and less like to support certain parties but I'm just not sure that's the case.

postmanwatcher · 28/08/2019 19:31

I agree. I was in a meeting today and talk turned to Brexit and the majority of people in the room felt that tribal voting is still strong in NI and elections results would be more of the same. That is a heart breaking realisation. The idea of trouble here again is beginning to get more real. Will we see a resurge in Brain drain again with people leaving in droves?

OP posts:
HateIsNotGood · 28/08/2019 21:08

But are all the problems in NI politically based? What about the relegious divisions - Protestant v Catholics? Isn't it true that most Protestants see themselves as British and Catholics as Irish - with Protestants being the majority in NI and Catholics the majority in RoI?

Growing up with that knowledge on the mainland certainly made me the Agnostic I am. I could never understand why people who believed in the same God would want to kill each other - I guess I never will.

Chocolatepeanuts · 28/08/2019 21:19

Tyrone woman here. Also looking at a job in Galway although it would break my heart to leave here. I was very much a "Northern Irish" person. Raised a catholic in a a neutral household, was very happy with the status quo in what I now realise was a post GFA bubble. I didn't know it could be so callously burst. I would happily have stayed in the UK, paying my taxes to the UK and following their laws. Now? Now I despise Westminster for their absolute disregard for us. I despise the DUP for the blinkered pig headedness and I despise SF for not getting their act together and doing all in their power to get Stormont up and running. I think they are rubbing their hands in glee thinking we are on our way to a border poll and they have just sat back and watched it happen. I was never a fan of Leo Varadkar, didn't really know anything about Simon Covney, but by God since the referendum they seem to be the only pair talking sense, with cool.calm heads, and really do seem to be the only ones who give a shiny shite about OUR future. They have stood up to BJ, they havre downplayed a border poll, they are realistic in what is likely to happen in the event of a No Deal. I can say Brexit has put me firmly into a Nationalist camp and I hope in my lifetime I will see a new United Ireland, through peaceful means. Now if I feel so strongly about this, and have changed my stance, I imagine many more have also. There are those perhaps who are not prepared to put up with what Westminster inflict on us once again and that scares the shit out of me.

I'm terrified for my wee children. Are they going to live through the horror we did? We were delibrately shielded from the majority of it as kids, didnt stop our world being blown apart by dissidents as teenagers. The same dissidents that are already out planting bombs and targeting officers on a weekly basis...that rarely gets mentioned in the mainland media.

Sorry for the essay 😳

MadeinBelfast · 28/08/2019 21:27

@chocolatepeanuts, well said. I feel pretty similarly. I know a lot of people don't like Varadkar but he does seem to be head and shoulders above any of our pathetic politicians. I really despise the lot of them for what they've done, or not done I suppose. We'll have to see what the next few weeks hold.....

MindyStClaire · 28/08/2019 21:32

Yup, from Dublin now in NI. Never really thought I'd be seriously considering the Troubles returning. Have seen several people on here today scoffing at the idea of civil war in the UK. They haven't a clue.

maidenover · 28/08/2019 21:51

Are we all thinking about moving to Galway because Dublin’s house prices are too bonkers?

@HateIsNotGood yep all the problems are basically political. The Protestant vs catholic thing is almost a coincidence because fundamentally it’s all about whether you want a united ireland or to remain part of the UK.

maidenover · 28/08/2019 21:52

Coincidence is probably the wrong word, I just meant that it isn’t really a religious conflict in that the troubles weren’t caused because of an argument of the best way to worship God.

Chocolatepeanuts · 28/08/2019 21:56

@maidenover no it's just I have a very niche job and a few posts have came up in the Galway area recently. DH can work anywhere really. I always kept an eye for jobs in ROI as I would have worked in Monaghan/Cavan in a heartbeat and travelled over the border.

postmanwatcher · 28/08/2019 22:18

Thinking of Galway as DH is from there. House prices in Dublin are mega nuts plus I'm not sure it's any nicer that Belfast. Chocolatepeanuts your post was perfect. I could have written it myself.
I grew up as a catholic in a mixed marriage house and was politically neutral. Brexit has made me a nationalist. I despise the British Government for the way they have used and abused NI and the DUP have shown that power is their only motivation.
I have been reading a novel set on the islands off the coast of Galway......they really are appealing at this point.

As a child growing up in Belfast during the troubles I witnessed some horrific things but it never made me want to leave. This was my home, where my family were, where my roots were. We have a teenager who, if the troubles started again I would encourage to leave.
People assume because of the GFA everything in NI is rosy but to me,(hope I’m not being too presumptious) the peace here is very fragile. When we feel threatened we tend to retreat back into our respective corners.
Recently we had to take DS to a Belfast hospital. There were several teenagers and people in their early 20s, people who were peace babies and their conversation clearly showed they were still of the mindset of their ancestors.
I don’t know what the future holds for us, but it doesn’t look good.

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 28/08/2019 22:27

Just wanted to send some solidarity from England. We haven't all forgotten you and are very much in my thoughts (as well as the general worries and fears) for what the post Brexit future holds.

SunnivaGunne · 28/08/2019 22:30

But isn't Ireland going to be screwed by Brexit anyway? Not just the north?

SistemaAddict · 28/08/2019 22:35

Another technically English remainer here who is VERY worried about NI. A lot of us care very deeply.
