Next week we will have a new PM. He will be called Boris Johnson unless something very odd has happened.

His first 72 hours will be 'interesting' especially if today's events are anything to go by.

His Cabinet is sure to be a horror show. It was noticable who abstained today - they don't think they will be in a Johnson Cabinet and clearly don't want to be.

To move forward Johnson must be able to survive a rebellion and a Queen's speech before now and 31st October.

And be able to unit his party in order to find a way forward.

And whilst parliament has voted to block proroguing parliament, it could still be dissolved if there is a vote of no confidence.

And what happens if Johnson loses a vote? Will he manage to become PM? Will there be a GE.

All the signs are that next week is going to be a hell of a ride.

Enjoy your weekend.

The other story about Hammond talks about how up to 6 Tory MPs are due to hold talks with the LD this week about thwarting Brexit which will include supporting a vote of no condience and even defection to the LDs.

Johnson's majority is so wafer thin thats enough to have a significant

red Shock that would be epic.

NoWordForFluffy · 20/07/2019 21:53

This week will be fascinating it that comes to pass!

CrunchyCarrot · 20/07/2019 21:55

This coming week is going to be such a rollercoaster ride that I'm conserving my energy by focusing on other things! Grin

ListeningQuietly · 20/07/2019 21:59

I am just so utterly sad.
All the opportunities for our young people
trashed at an altar of hate
and the same applies to the USA, Brazil, Hungary, the Philippines and other countries that have elected on a populist mandate

I struggle to see how we regroup from here Sad

bellinisurge · 20/07/2019 22:02

Patel - who thinks "starving Ireland " is a policy.
Words don't fail me but I'm not sure it helps even me.

TheABC · 20/07/2019 22:23

Right now, it feels like every racist, blind, ambitious pigheaded MP in the Tories is lined up to trash the UK via the executive. The more airtime they get, the more they will alienate the rest of the voting public.

If the rumours are correct, it will be a short tenure. If they manage to last past Christmas, I may need more gin.

Clavinova · 20/07/2019 22:30

I couldn't find anything specifically mentioning kippers, but the European Commission endorsed and published this guide on their Guidance Platform in November 2018;

"The European Salmon Smokers Association’s (ESSA) European Guide to Good Practice for Smoked and/or Salted and/or Marinated Fish."
"The Guide was endorsed by the EU Member States in the meeting of the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (PAFF) on 3 July 2018, in Brussels."

"The Guide was developed with the following objectives:"
"•Create a tool for all European fish smokers to have best practices and information for the production of safe products..."

I guess this is what some bod at the FSA was looking at - you would probably need ice to maintain a temperature of below 4 degrees C.

OPE 3.3 -TRANSPORTATION, STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION
End products and semi products should be handled, stored and transported in a manner to protect from damage and below the following temperatures: for chilled products 0 to 4°C, for frozen products ≤ -18°C until use (the time of purchase by the customer or other consumer).

The new Tory cabinet is probably going to look more non-white than usual though.

TheNumberfaker · 20/07/2019 22:40

@borntobequiet
It was so lovely to meet you today.

bellinisurge · 20/07/2019 22:43

@Clavinova Priti Patel has come out with the worst most ignorant anti-Irish comment of any of them. Diverse, my arse.

bellinisurge · 20/07/2019 22:44

But then Johnson thinks it's ok to use revolting racist language too so she'd be in good company.

Clavinova · 20/07/2019 23:13

James Cleverly and Sajid Javid have also been tipped for cabinet positions, plus another guy I can't remember the name of.

Peregrina · 20/07/2019 23:15

Still Gove and Patel's stupidities between them might bring about a United Ireland, and the break up of the United Kingdom.

I wonder if Cameron and May want to be seen as the ultimate architects of this?

StripeyChina · 20/07/2019 23:28

v belated PMK

Flooopers · 21/07/2019 00:19

So Gove as potential NI Secretary?

A man who despises the GFA. The current NI Secretary is Karen Bradley, a woman who didn't know upon taking the job that Catholics by and large vote for Nationalist politicians and that Protestants by and large vote for Unionist politicians. Well, it's clear NI's wellbeing is not high on Johnson's list of concerns.

Flooopers · 21/07/2019 00:22

The new Tory cabinet is probably going to look more non-white than usual though

And?

It's okay that Patel's Ireland policy is starvation because she's Asian?

Give yourself a shake.

Flooopers · 21/07/2019 00:30

James Cleverly and Sajid Javid have also been tipped for cabinet positions, plus another guy I can't remember the name of.

Rest easy. The white public school boys will still be pulling the strings. Everything else is window dressing. Just the way your sort likes it.

HesterThrale · 21/07/2019 07:41

How Le Monde reported the March yesterday. My French isn’t perfect, but I think this notes ‘the spectacular absence of the Labour Party’.

La spectaculaire absence du parti travailliste

It also reports a marcher saying J’espère que les Européens vont nous sauver de nous-mêmes.

‘I hope the Europeans save us from ourselves.’

Not sure how much ‘Europeans’ in general care any more. My feeling from meeting people on holiday in Europe and also from friends’ holiday feedback is that a lot of Europeans are perplexed, mystified and a bit fed-up with the Brexit charade. I hope their patience lasts a little longer.

QuckTheDuck · 21/07/2019 08:20

Can someone please give me a run down on Patel? I vaguely know the name but not much about her.

bellinisurge · 21/07/2019 09:07

She said that we could starve Ireland as a tactic.
Google "the Famine " to see what a fucking disgusting comment that was. If she knew about it and said that she's unsuitable for public decision making. If she didn't realise how dreadful that comment is , she's an idiot and unsuitable for public decision making.
And anyone who picks someone like her for a job also has questionable judgment abilities.
These are the people in charge now.Confused

1tisILeClerc · 21/07/2019 09:07

Seeing how many people get excited about 'closing down sales' of stores I can easily imagine larger EU companies champing at the bit for Brexit day. If I had a million 'spare' I would be in the queue.

SistemaAddict · 21/07/2019 09:11

PMK. Thanks red. Really need to keep up now that things are happening. It will be interesting terrifying to see how the new PM handles things. I'm pretty sure that there are still all the previously reserved hand baskets bound for hell on a one way ticket but you never know...

lonelyplanetmum · 21/07/2019 09:18

When Priti Patel was international development secretary she secretly went on summer ‘holiday’ invited by the Conservative Friends of Israel lobby group. She didn’t even tell the foreign office. She has a history of lobbying as she used to push for tobacco companies.

She didn’t go through any proper foreign office, civil servant and embassy channels anyway, and arranged to meet Netanyahu and lots of ministers there and see places like a hospital in the occupied Golan Heights. Non of it was cleared then she lied and said it was a family holiday.

Afterwards she supported increasing Britain’s overseas aid to the Israeli army and cutting aid to the Palestinians, including Gaza.

GeistohneGrenzen · 21/07/2019 09:19

Thanks for the Le Monde article Hester - I was amazed how well I understood it as my only formal education in French was for O Levels back in 1955! I suppose I must have picked up other bits and pieces since and it probably helped knowing what it was about in the first place. Afterwards I had fun quietly reading it out aloud. It gave me a good start to the day and unfamiliar exercise to my tongue Smile
