Next week we will have a new PM. He will be called Boris Johnson unless something very odd has happened.

His first 72 hours will be 'interesting' especially if today's events are anything to go by.

His Cabinet is sure to be a horror show. It was noticable who abstained today - they don't think they will be in a Johnson Cabinet and clearly don't want to be.

To move forward Johnson must be able to survive a rebellion and a Queen's speech before now and 31st October.

And be able to unit his party in order to find a way forward.

And whilst parliament has voted to block proroguing parliament, it could still be dissolved if there is a vote of no confidence.

And what happens if Johnson loses a vote? Will he manage to become PM? Will there be a GE.

All the signs are that next week is going to be a hell of a ride.

Enjoy your weekend.

DGR
What are your thoughts on advance voting?

And how would you resolve the issue of people who cannot get to a polling station during the open period?

ListeningQuietly · 19/07/2019 18:22

PS this side discussion is highly relevant
because making people feel enfranchised will increase participation
and hopefully make them vote with their heads

I think I've been told this before but I've forgotten why using a pencil is better than a pen? It seems less permanent.🤷🏻‍♀️

When BoJo or Hunt get into No10 next week, who out of the 60 Million or so will have had what they voted for 'satisfied'?

tobee · 19/07/2019 18:40

I was really miserable when Fool Cameron got into No 10. When Johnson does next week........ SadAngryEnvy

Tuesday morning for the bad news wasn't it?

Peregrina · 19/07/2019 19:14

I felt gutted when Major got in in 1992! Now look at him - he's become something of an elder statesman and a voice of sense.

Flooopers · 19/07/2019 19:20

I think the reason they use pencils is that they can all be packed up ready for the next election/referendum/next vote in the descent into dystopian hell and there's no fear that they'll have dried out and need to be replaced like pens.

Whisky2014 · 19/07/2019 19:22

How come if everyone who could vote has voted that we have to wait so long for the result??

Peregrina · 19/07/2019 19:32

It would be nice, if for example, someone who hopes that with higher unemployment benefits will be increased could offer some evidence of that being likely to happen. So far all the evidence we have seen has been to the contrary.

The Tories are now hoping to bribe some public sector workers with pay rises. Big deal - the rises will come from existing budgets, which have already been cut to the bone. If it had been new money it might have been different, although it would still be difficult not to see it as a cynical ploy to buy votes.

Peregrina · 19/07/2019 19:34

Sorry, posted to the wrong thread there.

Iambuffy · 19/07/2019 19:34

We bought "blod" at lindisfarne last week.
Its strong stuff.
I might leave that for the zombie apocalypse

ListeningQuietly · 19/07/2019 19:35

Whisky
They are still sending out ballot papers to the correct addresses
It transpired that by the time of the head to head debate, less than 10% of ballots had been returned.

I know of members who tweeted their vote weeks ago, but many have kept their powder dry till the last minute.

OublietteBravo · 19/07/2019 19:39

The deadline for returning the ballot paper is 17:00 on Monday.

OublietteBravo · 19/07/2019 19:39

I posted mine last week

BigChocFrenzy · 19/07/2019 19:39

and some Tory members have received 2 ballot papers, so may have voted twice -...

Re simple id cards, in Ireland if you have a valid passport you can get a credit card sized id card based on your passport data for an extra 30 or so euro. No fancy linked databases and incredibly handy as it's constantly in my purse and is used for everything from picking up parcels to travelling through the EU and of course as voter id.

Whisky2014 · 19/07/2019 19:55

Ah ok, thanks all
