{So basically the smorgasbord where you have to try a bit of everything is the Withdrawal Agreement?}
Yes, so it's fewer immigrants, more money for NHS, sovereignty and so on, all the bits and pieces that people thought they might get. There is a bit of an issue that most of the items are not controlled by the EU at all so it is actually the failing of several UK government policies.
The leave campaigners were happy to say that things were problems 'caused' by the EU, whereas in reality it is UK policy only.
Things like the failure to support Northern and other areas where industry has declined is a UK gov issue and leaving the EU will make no difference at all.
{And what is the political declaration?}
The WA is a bit like a price list, a tin of beans is 60p, ice cream £2 sort of thing (although it is legal treaties spanning 28 countries). The PD is the proposed shopping list, so we want the beans, but can do without the icecream. This is intentionally 'woolley' at this stage and it can be renegotiated. The UK can decide which elements (ingredients) it wants.
{The picture with the steps above?}
These represent the 'deals' that various countries have with the EU.
Norway pays less per head into the EU but it has no MEPs so it has to accept any legislation from the EU. The trade arrangements are simpler and they do not need 'seamless access' where goods can go across the border with practically no checks. They accept that all goods have to go through customs clearance possibly taking several hours. If it is washing machines then it is no great problem. Manufacturers in the UK, say BMW making Mini's in Oxford, their production relies on exactly the right parts arriving at the factory gates within a half hour 'window' otherwise production may have to be halted until the stuff arrives. (JIT, Just In Time). Stoppage for 1 day 'costs' BMW about £60 Million.
For companies like BMW to survive JIT must continue but the various rules that allow the EU to work mean that the UK has to stay in the customs union, and single market. Theresa and others were saying they want out of the single market because they fancy trying their luck getting 'better' deals with the USA for example. We can't have both.
