London is no longer an English city

Said by John Cleese (he of Monty Python fame), recently. Link to story is here:

What do other people think? I do see London's diversity as being its great strength, but maybe it's just because I live in the London bubble - and maybe the view from the rest of the country is utter horror that the capital seems to be becoming increasingly disconnected from the country. Both economically and culturally. Hence the Brexit vote - Remain in a sea of Leave.

What's the view from others?

Well what point are you making then Zipee? You have dismissed the contribution the regions make to the economy, questioned the fact that the Tories have made bigger cuts in some areas than others and stated that regions don’t deserve funding for theatres, libraries and museums because London is bigger. You also said that if people don’t like this they should move to London. Are you Esther McVey?

Coppersulphate · 11/06/2019 21:02

I am in London and it certainly does not feel like an English city.

I worked in Wigan in a senior position for 10 years and it is certainly deprived. There is little skilled work. It is easy for people to say" just move", but it is not as easy as that. People often do not feel confident enough to just up sticks and move, and many don't have the skills that are required elsewhere.
But, importantly why on earth should people have to move away from the place they were born and where family, friends and roots are?
Wigan is poor and there are not many high street businesses left. So the business rates are low. There is an excellent college but funding for further education has been cut. Similarly for adult education.

The people of Wigan are not benefit scrounges, nor are they thick.
They, like many in northern cities, have lost out to the south.
I know this because I live in the south east but visit London regularly.

Liverpool and Manchester feel a long way from Wigan and the public transport is a disgrace to a first world country. And very expensive if you are on the minimum wage.
Yes, there are teams in Manchester and merseyrail is good ( but limited). Neither are close to Wigan.
People who have spent their lives in the SE have no idea how difficult life can be in the northern cities.

I understand completely why they voted leave. And I don't blame them.

Coppersulphate · 11/06/2019 21:03

Trams not teams. I should reread my posts!

Quick google shows loads of free and very cheap museums in Liverpool and Manchester.

You just have an "its not fair" complex.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 21:12

Now I am an idiot and a whinger...

1tisILeClerc · 11/06/2019 21:13

None of this has anything to do with Brexit however, it is ALL UK government failing to actually govern the country in an equitable way.
Industries in the North (typically) would always struggle due to lack of investment to modernise, and to consider the impact of China and India etc producing much the same as the UK but with cheaper labour and greater raw materials. The mills of Manchester and Lancashire started to decline as soon as cotton was produces in India.

Zipee · 11/06/2019 21:19

The mills.of the North West were pretty much done by the 1930s.

Nope those museums arent fucked. Both Livsrpool and manchester have national museums and ones funded by other charities.
None of then get the visitor numbers that the London ones do.

There is a reason for that.

Dispersing the museums around the coubtry would just mean fewer people see the exhibits.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 21:29

So the Guardian article is also wrong Zipee? I get that you don’t care about young people outside London but I care passionately about improving social mobility in our regions. I can see that you don’t and that you never will.

Zipee · 11/06/2019 21:31

Oh and its everything to do with brexit.

People voted becsuse they feel like Howdou. Completely at odds with the actual reality of what Brexit will bring.

Howdou also seems to have the brexiter persecution complex, someone is denying her something and its not fair. No matter that there arr international standard museums, tate liverpool, slavery museum, world.museum, Walker Art gallery, Lady zlever Galery, Imperial.war.museum.North, Lowry Gallery, Science and Industry Museum, Whitworth gallery, Manchester Museum, rochdale.pioneers and many more. Within an hour of her, and free, she thinks she is some how deprived by thst London.

Zipee · 11/06/2019 21:33

Im all about Social mobility, but you are.conflating local authority run museums with those run by national organisations. Ive listed a load you have on your door step for free.

1tisILeClerc · 11/06/2019 21:40

Zipee
Brexit has nothing to do with museums or the fact that the UK Sovereign government can't organise the UK in an equitable manner.
It did manage to run quite decent schools in the past, where were you during English lessons?

Zipee · 11/06/2019 21:45

Typing with fat fingers fast on a phone, sorry, but its bad manners to comment on spag on a a forum.

A whole load of votes were anti metropolitan elite and and about "that London gets everything."

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 21:47

I voted remain Zipee. I am speaking about how others feel, not myself.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 21:48

You can’t care about social mobility Zipee if you hold the views you have expressed on here.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 21:50

I should clarify I don’t hold Brexiteer views. I am a remainer. I do hold the views I have expressed about social mobility and lack of funding in my region (and others).

Zipee · 11/06/2019 21:52

But you have said that this is how you feel.

There are a whole load of museums and srt gallery's run for free near you.

There are 4 universities in greater Manchester, 4 in Liverpool too.

This is what I mean, the "that London" complex is very much to do with Brexit, and like much of the reasoning behind brexit it is spurious.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 21:53

I am a resolute remainer. I am angry about lack of social mobility. I don’t care if you think I have a complex.

Zipee · 11/06/2019 21:54

Social mobility is an issue in London ti though?

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 21:59

There is a ton of evidence that social mobility is far worse in some parts of the UK than others but there is absolutely no point me linking any of it because Zipee doesn’t believe the facts that don’t match her views.

Songsofexperience · 11/06/2019 22:03

Zipee, Howwud

You both care about social mobility. You both agree it's lacking everywhere. You are both remainers... and i take it neither of you will likely vote Tory. Where's the problem ? 😀

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 22:07

In the words of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman ‘it’s just geography.’

Zipee · 11/06/2019 22:07

and if you knew anything other than headline facts you would know that whislt deprived children in London do better than their compatriots outside of the capital this progress is not sustained post education due to high costs of living and low pay.

.

howwudufeel · 11/06/2019 22:12

How many times can you insult me Zipee just to try to win an argument?
