On the Eve of the EU Elections that we never met to happen, and we don't know what the next hour next mind day might bring.

Farage is enjoying the theatre of milkshakes. It means he gets attention and gets to play the victim. And avoid talking about his dodgy friends and even dodgier financing. The Brexit Party are polling so highly its possible he could be PM. And boy does he know it. The temptation is there and its too much to resist.

May has refused to resign so far tonight after a day of asking her to. The 1922 Committee refused to change the rules to help oust her - possibly because they don't want the next PM to be beset with challenges to the leadership at the drop of a hat. Graham Brady is seeing her on Friday... The ERG are not happy bunnies.

May is still apparently planning to plough on with the WAB with a referendum possibly attached. Though this remains to be seen.

Meanwhile Leadsom has just quit the Cabinet. She was one of the Brexit 'Pizza Club'. Rumours are this might be the Cabinet withdrawing support for her. Though Gove has said he doesn't intend to resign (tonight at least).

Rumour is that May's senior staff have abandoned her to let her make the decision to go. And rumours are that when Leadsom rang May to tell her she was leaving cabinet, May didn't tell her senior staff. This comes two weeks after rumours where that Phillip May was at the point of telling her it was time to resign. The rumours of course may be just that, rumours but it's hard to see how or why anyone would tell her to carry on now.

And so tomorrow. Who would vote for this utter shower of shit? Even if you were the most loyal of Tories?

The thing tomorrow is to get the remain vote out. It doesn't matter ultimately what people vote for. Every vote cast for remain keeps the Brexit Party popular vote down. Even if it doesn't win seats. And that is psychologically important.

Tomorrow make sure EVERYONE you know who is anti brexit party votes. More so if they are a Remainer voting for a Remain party, but also if they are solid Labour or the rarest of things, a true blue.

It MATTERS. Narratives will be set.

If you are not sure if you are registered to vote, please TRY ANYWAY. The worst case is you are turned away and have lost 20 mins of your life. But you might also be able to vote and that might change the course of events.

Talk to people tomorrow. Remind them. Make sure it's about preventing a hard right foothold. Apathy will destroy our futures. Being fed up of politicians so refusing to vote is actively shooting yourself in the face.

Who am I voting for?

Still no idea. But I will vote.

Ken Clarke on Today now.

Talking so much sense.

"I don't think even Boris Johnson knows what Boris Johnson's policy is on withdrawal from EU".

From lab councillor
Long day at Polling stations greeting voters ending up at the BIC, getting involved in the verification count with our fab Labour team. Turnout in Bournemouth was nearly 36%. Thanks to all that turned up to vote. We finished the verification at 1.10am today. Results, Sunday.

Ian Warren @election_data
Very early days of course but if the early turnout figures pan out, we don't appear to be seeing the huge boost in turnout some may have expected.

Im not sure a huge boost in turnout is what was needed to get really high figures for the Brexit Party and LDs. Strange comment from someone who supposedly knows about polling.

Leave areas outnumber remain ones by over 2 to 1. Low turnout may well produce a very polarised result as predicted by YouGov...

^John Mann @johnmannmp
European election turnout in Bassetlaw lower than in 2014 and lower than 2009. Disdain, even contempt for Parliament more than anger^

The MP for Bassetlaw described the decision as "Mandelsonian" Momentum plot to keep Jeremy Corbyn's anti-EU stance from the conference stage

"Mandelsonian"

Nope John, disdain is reserved for shifty little nationalist socialist customers like you, matey.

RedToothBrush · 24/05/2019 08:36

Plaid Cardiff central @ pccarcentral
Turnout is up in Cardiff (usually closer to 30% we believe).

Ryan Price @davesparade
Turnout in Cardiff was 41%, up 10 points on the whole of Wales turnout in 2014 (I’ve not got the Cardiff turnout figures to hand)

Note Merthyr turnout 29%

Key Question for me now is what did Remainers in Leave areas do? If they were more likely to turn out, that would be a good thing. If they were more apathetic Remainers who haven't shown, thanks not so good.

London turnouts should be interesting...

South Kesteven 38,330 ballots cast which equates to a 36.6% turnout

So Nige thought he would be leading a large group of right wing eurosceptic MEPs from all over Europe. Those two exit polls are making me hope he's going to be disappointed.

Mistigri · 24/05/2019 08:57

My mum, floating voter and (probably) leaver in 2016 voted for the Greens. I take this as a good sign! She's SW so she had a competent sitting MEP to vote for.

Peregrina · 24/05/2019 08:59

Well he still might lead a biggish contingent, but if he can be overtaken in vote share by Remain parties, he might have egg on his face. Or should that be milkshake.

I can't find the posting from Dad and his footie club now, but it looks as though the real losers are the Tories. I wonder whether May will resign today?

HesterThrale · 24/05/2019 09:09

On R4 2 political commentators just now saying they think it’s going to be Boris. I didn’t think it was possible for me to feel any more depressed about the way this country's going...

And this was just after a feature with someone saying the government’s main responsibility should be creating wellbeing and happiness, rather than financial growth.

Irony groan...

borntobequiet · 24/05/2019 09:11

Boris as PM would be the final nail in the coffin for the Conservative Party. This is the person who said "Fuck business". Endgame.

Peregrina · 24/05/2019 09:13

The leading contenders often don't win, as with Heseltine. This may not be the case now, because I think they changed the rules after Thatcher.

NEW: The Conservatives Vice Chair for Communities has just resigned.

Never heard of this person, but why resign today? Unless May actually isn't going after all.

Peregrina · 24/05/2019 09:14

If it's the end for the Tories, who will fill the vacuum?
I would expect then that the Tories would suddenly become converts to a PR system of representation.

StripeyChina · 24/05/2019 09:18

JRM on All Out Politics atm seriously supporting BoJo. Ugh.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/05/2019 09:24

I think BoJo will decide what his policy is re withdrawal if and when he gets the job. And if it doesn't match what his supporters' views are, then that won't matter to him.

Despite the bumbling idiot persona, he isn't stupid and will do what makes him popular and successful (if there is such an option).

usuallydormant · 24/05/2019 09:28

Not sure if this has been posted before or not but a EU poll of polls which is really interesting, lots of lovely graphs and interactivity :)

“Tunbridge Wells council told voter Geraldine Coyne, who is visiting her partner in Sweden during the election period, that the ballot papers were sent out late because the printers didn’t have capacity”.

Guardian piece on slow death throes of democracy. Workman and his tools...

RedToothBrush · 24/05/2019 09:33

Ian Warren @ election_data
Changes in turnout from 2014 thus far
Exeter 41% (no change)
Bath and NE Somerset 44% (+5.6%)
Wiltshire 44% (+7.1%)
Cardiff 42% (+10.3%)
Plymouth 35% (-2.5%)
Wyre Forest 32% (-3.9%)
Ashfield 31% (+0.8%)
Bassetlaw 30% (-3.4%)
Merthyr Tydfil 29% (+1.9%)
Wigan 28% (-0.5%)

Printing capacity - unfortunately there could be some truth in this, because the EU elections were called late. It's the same as some regular polling stations not being available, because they were already booked up. As someone said earlier, it's yet another thing which May has botched, or being kind, the Tory party being busy fighting among themselves have allowed the botch to happen.

RedToothBrush · 24/05/2019 09:38

NEW: The Conservatives Vice Chair for Communities has just resigned.

Never heard of this person, but why resign today

Because results so far are highlighting the metropolitan v provisional divide that the Tory Party has failed to address and engage voters with.

That's basically the remit of communities.

A resignation is in protest at how the rest of the party isn't listening (and to save their own political career).

OP posts:
ClarkeMurphy · 24/05/2019 09:38

printers didn’t have capacity

Then they should have allowed the UC1 form to be completed at polling stations. Or used printers from other departments. Or basically anything except decide that the votes of thousands of citizens just weren't worth the effort. This indicates that they (the councils) knew in advance it was going to be a problem and nothing was done to rectify the situation.

ClarkeMurphy · 24/05/2019 09:39

Thanks, red.
