On the Eve of the EU Elections that we never met to happen, and we don't know what the next hour next mind day might bring.

Farage is enjoying the theatre of milkshakes. It means he gets attention and gets to play the victim. And avoid talking about his dodgy friends and even dodgier financing. The Brexit Party are polling so highly its possible he could be PM. And boy does he know it. The temptation is there and its too much to resist.

May has refused to resign so far tonight after a day of asking her to. The 1922 Committee refused to change the rules to help oust her - possibly because they don't want the next PM to be beset with challenges to the leadership at the drop of a hat. Graham Brady is seeing her on Friday... The ERG are not happy bunnies.

May is still apparently planning to plough on with the WAB with a referendum possibly attached. Though this remains to be seen.

Meanwhile Leadsom has just quit the Cabinet. She was one of the Brexit 'Pizza Club'. Rumours are this might be the Cabinet withdrawing support for her. Though Gove has said he doesn't intend to resign (tonight at least).

Rumour is that May's senior staff have abandoned her to let her make the decision to go. And rumours are that when Leadsom rang May to tell her she was leaving cabinet, May didn't tell her senior staff. This comes two weeks after rumours where that Phillip May was at the point of telling her it was time to resign. The rumours of course may be just that, rumours but it's hard to see how or why anyone would tell her to carry on now.

And so tomorrow. Who would vote for this utter shower of shit? Even if you were the most loyal of Tories?

The thing tomorrow is to get the remain vote out. It doesn't matter ultimately what people vote for. Every vote cast for remain keeps the Brexit Party popular vote down. Even if it doesn't win seats. And that is psychologically important.

Tomorrow make sure EVERYONE you know who is anti brexit party votes. More so if they are a Remainer voting for a Remain party, but also if they are solid Labour or the rarest of things, a true blue.

It MATTERS. Narratives will be set.

If you are not sure if you are registered to vote, please TRY ANYWAY. The worst case is you are turned away and have lost 20 mins of your life. But you might also be able to vote and that might change the course of events.

Talk to people tomorrow. Remind them. Make sure it's about preventing a hard right foothold. Apathy will destroy our futures. Being fed up of politicians so refusing to vote is actively shooting yourself in the face.

Who am I voting for?

Still no idea. But I will vote.

Where are you Daddybegood? Are you in a Remain or a Leave area? If Remain, it's no big surprise, if Leave then yes, that's a turn up for the books!

Peregrina · 23/05/2019 22:02

Well the polls have closed now. My party aren't even sending any observers to the ballot opening and verification, only to the count.
The results will be notified initially at the various counting places and then collated, so we should be able to see which votes have gone where.

Daddybegood · 23/05/2019 22:09

Peregrina. I am on South coast so tactically voted for change. The footie club is London (premier league) but a reasonably broad sweep of contributors mainly across the South East but also a few expats.
I would have expected about 25% for brexit and 15% for Tory so this has really surprised me.
Who knows if this suggests a broader trend but it indicates to me that the Tories will get slammed and that remain voting alternatives may do better than expected especially the libdems

Peregrina · 23/05/2019 22:13

Thanks for that Daddybegood. I am in the South East but very much aware that I am in a Remain enclave. But in the recent local elections even wards which usually return Tory councillors quite often didn't. Local elections aren't always a useful prediction of what the mood of the country is though.

I expect the Remain vote to be split, but if by some miracle it's more than Farage's party gets, it will be a bonus.

borntobequiet · 23/05/2019 22:20

That footie poll is really interesting, thanks Daddy.

TatianaLarina · 23/05/2019 22:23

Stolen a poll from another politics forum - how people voted today (340 in total):

Labour 9%
Conservative 0%
SNP/PC 8%
UKIP 0%
Lib Dems 40%
Greens 10%
Change UK 2%
The Brexit Party 22%
Other 2%
Didn't Vote 3%

phpolly · 23/05/2019 22:25

.

Peregrina · 23/05/2019 22:29

Tatiana - another Remain enclave maybe? I won't rest easy until we know the proper results. If it's Farage's sorry crowd, it will be a matter of time before they all fall out with each other.

PigletJohn · 23/05/2019 22:29

alas, self-selected groups are not representative samples.

tobee · 23/05/2019 22:29

Snort laughing at @Moanranger 's comment about giving off "a whiff of Brexit " Grin

Peregrina · 23/05/2019 22:36

I was telling at the Local Elections the other week and I thought my polling station was giving off a whiff of Tory voting, but I was completely wrong.

I would expect a footie crowd to be a bit small c conservative and some of their supporters are racist, aren't they? Going by what I read about the treatment of black players.

LonelyTiredandLow · 23/05/2019 22:39

Managed to convince 3 people to vote (Remainers) today. Well 2, 1 had almost forgotten Shock

Worried that people, as these did, don't see this as anything that will change the political climate. "Well, we're going to Brexit anyway, so what is the point?" was the initial reasoning.

HesterThrale · 23/05/2019 22:41

Now. If it’s really 1 - 2 million EU citizens that were unable to vote, it’s not only a national scandal and shame, it will change the outcome of the election.

LordBiro · 23/05/2019 22:44

I'm SE coast, definitely a strong Brexity smell coming from the polling station tonight. Sigh. Like referendum night tbh and this is proper Leave area.

I voted CHange UK after much flip flopping but went with the tactical remainvote suggestion in the end.

LonelyTiredandLow · 23/05/2019 22:45

Oh, and I directed someone to their new polling station thanks to Google Grin - she hasn't got a smart phone atm so called me in desperation! Feels like I've done my bit. Votes I know of so far: LD 5 Green 1

LonelyTiredandLow · 23/05/2019 22:46

Hester - yes, if the 3mil EU citizens had had a voice in the referendum...

TatianaLarina · 23/05/2019 22:51

LauraK

1. Been a weird day - election rules have meant we haven’t been able to report fully on what’s been going on

Daddybegood · 23/05/2019 22:51

A footie crowd is probably more mixed than you describe Peregrina, although just like the rest of society there are racists (never admit it though) and those with lower intelligence levels.....but really no different to mumsnet.
I would say that from the people I know on there most are very against racism (and sexism for that matter) and wouldn't like to be tarnished with stupidity of a very small minority.
I would say that it is nearly all male and mostly in the 35-75yo age category which is definitely strong traditional gammon territory where voters are more likely to vote for a donkey with a blue or red rosette.....but not in this election

ContinuityError · 23/05/2019 22:54

I’m watching the guy free climb up El Capitán on Ch4 right now and it seems less risky than all the crap going on in the UK just now. Hmm

NoWordForFluffy · 23/05/2019 22:56

Did anybody see Dominic Grieve and some ERG woman (I didn't catch her name) on Newsnight?

She was bleating on about the 17.4 million and not going against democracy, blah blah. All the Brexiter soundbites. She was very frustrating.

Littlespaces · 23/05/2019 22:57

It is all going to come back to haunt them though.

HazardGhost · 23/05/2019 23:04

Please someone stop me reading the stupid spoilt ballot thread...my blood pressure can't take it. Some obviously educated people who are so thick and it's disheartening that you could go through education and be that thick.

Liking the mini polls and yes I know they are self seleting and not accurate but as we wont have accurate for days it quenches my percentages thirst Grin so thanks for sharing!

NoWordForFluffy · 23/05/2019 23:05

As everyone keeps pointing out, the maths just isn't in Parliament to get the only version of the WA we're going to have through. No Prime Minister can change that.

Dominic said he'd support a no confidence vote against the government if he had to, if it was the only way to stop no deal. Good on him!

TokyoSushi · 23/05/2019 23:05

39% turn out at my polling station today, disgruntled electorate, lots of people voting even though 'we should be out of all of this by now'

Mainly elderly voters, I fear an excellent result for turquoise Sad

Peregrina · 23/05/2019 23:08

I didn't know there was a spoilt ballot thread. I don't think I will bother to try to find it either. I still think that a spoilt ballot is better than not voting at all. Ideally there should be a 'none of these' option.
